per usual crt + N64 is best, using the original controller improves things.
if you have to emulate, i'd recommend playing at original resolution, 640x480 like on the gamecube looks worse

All the extra shit like 60 fps and widescreen are optional. You can set it to look like just an n64 emulator (or an actual n64) but still get better performance and less resources being hogged.

It’s actually pretty interesting how you will inevitably get better and better at a rapid rate by just playing through the game. By the end of the game I was raping those mini games. The one that really broke my ass was training Epona, not just because it was fucking hard but also because it was fucking useless.

>> No.9443823

>>9443796
The N64 joystick has a pretty different feel to most other joysticks. It was a shitty design in that it pretty much used plastic-on-plastic friction to create resistance and wore down over time and were hell on people's thumbs, but the point is it had a different tactility to it. It's not that it's a better controller, it's that N64 games were designed to be played with the N64 controller. Funny, that.

What about the GameCube version?

>>9443783
That's a recurring problem with N64 games.
The N64 controller has a huge pivot that modern controllers do not, even the GameCube controller's analogue has a drastically smaller pivot.
The result of that is you have far less range for finer movements, and N64 emulation gets this wrong all the time. There's no compensation for it, like an exponential curve.

>what about the GameCube version

I played the one that also comes with Master Quest and I didn’t have any problems with it. The controls were kind of finicky but I imagine it’s basically the same on original hardware. I also managed to complete all of the shooting mini games without feeling like the difficulty was due to the controller rather than my own incompetence. I’m currently playing the GCN version of Majora’s Mask (which also comes with OoT), and it controls about the same.

On Windows it uses Direct3D11.
That means you can just hook Reshade into it, and set up crt-royale just like you would with Retroarch.

I don't got a CRT with a hookup handy, like a lot of people.
I'm not one for CRT filters personally, I prefer stuff like Blargg's NTSC filter; reproducing the signal going to the TV, rather than the TV display.

In any case I did get Reshade + CRT Royale working with Ship of Harkinian, and tweaks the presets from non-default.
I find it pretty harsh to look at even on a good 4K display.
The underlying image is native 4K but the shader masks the image, and I think is supposed to produce a phosphor glow effect but I'm not really seeing it.
Still, this is only really scratching the surface of what Reshade can do if I really wanted to put more time into it.

>> No.9444046

>>9443998
Yeah reshade lets you do a lot of shit.
Even on non retro games you can use it to mess with colors and shading. Just be careful because some online games will flag it as a cheat engine.

It has very questionable controls because modern gamepads are different and instead of reworking it to the usual quickselect-action button scheme they just added more workarounds. I had to remap the arrow buttons to the d-pad because of false activation with the right stick and it worked somehow but was far from the best. Also the key remapping dialog came straight form an emulator.

>> No.9444085

I'm 100%ing the gamecube version right now because I have nothing to play, and I remember years ago I started to do the same thing but gave up and dropped it after trying to get the quiver upgrade in Gerudo Valley and just rage quitting. All aiming segments are very easy in OoT. I did them easily as a kid on the N64, did them easy emulating with first a logitech PS1 ripoff, then a real n64 controller. Now I'm playing the OoT PC port at 144fps and it was extremely easy with my Switch Pro controller (Did not use gyro). You need to have a minds eye of where your arrow or sling will go, almost like an invisible crosshair. Once you have that you should be able to hit a bullseye 9/10 times.

While I don't personally use them, I can let all the filter effects slide except the bowing.
If your picture bowed or was otherwise warped, your set was miscalibrated. I don't think I ever even saw anyone's set like that in person and I lived through that era.
If it didn't come correct from the factory, it took all of 2 seconds to fiddle with the nobs or and OSD if you're fancy.
It reminds me of how kids today think VHS tapes all looked like they had decades of ware on them, when they were new.
You can say that games were designed for pixel bleeding, etc. but I'm pretty sure nobody ever intended for their games to be played on a bowed screen on purpose.

Ah, it's not bowing that it's trying to replicate.
It's screen curvature, the rounded surface of the CRT display.
Some models would have part of the edges that "fade out" or may have something partially obscuring it, if we're talking old family TV sets.
