All of them, 2 and 3 are amazing especially. Play on the original platforms if possible, but feel free to emulate if you can't. If you don't read Japanese, you'll need the translation patches for the rest of 3 (only scenario 1 was released officially in English).

Sword of Hajya (Gaiden 2) is my favorite in the series, when taken for what it is. Its not the best of them in almost any regard, but it had a lot of really cool ideas, especially for being on the game gear at the time. I know everyone jumps to the CD version, but I have a soft spot for a lot of the bugs and presentation from the original GG release. Just keep in mind its going to feel like a step back in some regards due to the limitations it had.

He was barely involved in it (just the monster design IIRC). But I guess it's decent-ish for a standalone single-player-only Diablo clone game loosely inspired by SF1. Just don't expect it to be connected to other games in the series, including Shining Force EXA, which rehashes most of the work on Neo, except for the storyline, new and better designs and various improvements.

I bought the genesis mini 2 and it has 3 SF games on it. I remember having SF1 on cart back in the day but was too young to get very far - same with landstalker.
Anyway I started SF2 and after losing the first fight a few times I realized hero and healer didn't have weapons equipped and now I'm making progress, just having had the jewel of light attach itself to the hero's neck.
Also also I own SF3 for Saturn and that shit cost me like $500.

I've beaten Shining Force a number of times, but I always just played straight through. No Egress to grind levels or anything, so I decided to go the opposite route this time and grind every character up to 20, promote and then up to 20 again just to see where they end up, because there's a lot of characters like Arthur that I always just trashed right away. arthur struggles a little bit at the start, but he's absolutely worth investing the love into. some other characters are kind of mediocre, but arthur is an absolute death machine after promotion. one thing i really hated about sf1 is how many characters join you woefully underpowered and how hard/tedious it is to get them up to competent levels/stats.

i hope you find some good results! i always hear about certain characters being great, but i always hit some sort of roadblock and never used them. like the birds! i always hit a moment when they just dont have the strength to deal damage, so they never get experience enough to kill and keep up with the rest, but some people somehow swear by them. i never did domingo because i liked my lady mages, but apparently he's kind of busted with the flying and absurd defense stats. i have put in the effort for bleu and adam, but i feel like they were mediocre (or maybe i never finished catching adam up to the rest because it takes an absurd amount of redoing battles to get him to 20 and then catch up) or "at this point, does it even matter? basically everyone is good this late".

The birds are awesome. Their stats really aren't that bad, they just suffer in the same way Max does early on, they're just stuck with crappy weapons too long. It's worth throwing the power ring on them though, and then when they promote, they have competent stats even without the ring and are great for attacking enemies from odd positions. Domingo is a beast early on, but Anri eventually outpaces him in nearly every way.

my favorite end team is max, tao, gort, mae, anri, arthur, zylo, guntz, musashi, torasu, bleu, kokichi. other than kokichi and maybe bleu, i dont know who i would want to swap out.

>> No.9448243

Both birds isn't really necessary. It's fun, but only one of them can hold the Chaos Breaker, so it can be smarter to just run one of them. Balbaroy usually ends up with higher attack, but Amon is more well-rounded, so I prefer her. It's hard to let go of Tao for anybody, but Domingo is strong, mostly because he levels up so fast, he can fly, and he has a ton of defense. Furthermore, he is often second priority for enemy targeting after Max, so you can kind of just use him as a shield even if he runs out of MP.

By the time archer promotion weapons appear anri and domingo are close to/gained freeze 3 for the huge range attacks and if you level hans at this point you are going to get lyle soon as well who is just better out of the box.

honestly, i like to shoot for lvl40 promotions, but i start to feel the burnout between the first visit to pacalon and moun/nazca because lacking the promotion weapons really makes things difficult and enemies start having large amount of health.

It's a turn-based tactics and it's an RPG.
I mean, I sort of get what you mean, since no one calls Pool of Radiance a TRPG, despite a similar battle system, but both genres are extremely close anyway since RPGs descended from wargames in general, so it really doesn't matter.

That's another thing I liked but don't see mentioned often. The locations in SF1 are mostly super memorable. Mage city in the desert, town built into a cliffside, island town, town that's actually a giant train, coastal fortress town, town with nothing but kids... SF2 also had places like Bedoe and Tristan. The unique character of the locales is something I always liked about the series.

i dont think either game has better or worse "pacing". 1 has a more clear objectives and reasons for pressing forward, 2 has a little more "go help my brother at the cliffs" and "we need to go to this place" but its 2+ battles to GET there. however, the battlefield layout for a LOT of battles is an absolute slog. just full forest/mountains for so many fucking battles. also stupid 1-tile choke points that you have to bust through before you can even really USE your army sometimes. sf2 did a lot better with most fields having grass paths so you can progress FORWARD and not waste 4+ turns just moving with zero engagement. the only battle that takes forever to engage that i can excuse is the general elliot fight, because of the structure and design of really crashing 2 armies together, and its rare that enemies are fully grouped up like that. it was cool.
>>9455437
sf1 definitely had more unique towns. mage city, island city, kid town, underground castle, train town, cliffside, and rindo with the actors. sf2 has bedoe, tristan, pacalon, elf/dwarf forest, and creed's. thats about it. i wouldnt even count the port town after the kraken. even though the count is only a couple off, the locations in 1 were so much more poignant and memorable for being different.

Like, he seems to be an adventurous type unlike most of other Shining heroes, even if he puts duty first. Not that I expect him to be as rogue-ish as Nigel of course.
Btw, wasn't the unused hardcoded name for the Hero of SitD in Japanese Max too? Seems to be a trend for Cli-Max games. They named their FEDA development team Max Entertainment too, after all.

The real issue is his low movement and the fact you get Musashi right before him who is also just a brick shithouse character that is also slow but is leveled and ready to go.

Like, I love the scenario and the characters a ton. It's probably the most creative one before the Saturn era. But still it's hard to see it for me as its own thing, with all the things from the prequel.

Very cool, but not definitive by a long shot. I prefer treating it as a standalone thing, even if I love some elements from it a lot.
>pros
Talking to the other members in HQ is nice, even though there are some oddities here and there. Expanded cutscenes and lines that characters got against some of the enemies or in battle intros are nice.
Battle sprites are very good, especially since everyone isn't just a colorswap anymore. Oh, and alt costumes for the girls are also got them now.
New storyline with Narsha and new characters are great.
Musashi and Hanzou got classes to be promoted to.
New Game+ with increase of the difficulty is neat.
Better translation
>cons
Max is more talkative now and not in a good way
Music is worse
New characters are broken as fuck, except for the coolest one (who is a rip-off from FEDA anyway)
Screen is crunched
Promotion gimps magic-users hard now
Musashi and Hanzou promotions might be too weeb and not as cool, depending on your tastes.
Game didn't really account for any of the sequels and some of the other side materials existing, so there might be some oddities and/or questionable decisions if you're into SF lore.

Max and Kane were brothers, Kane knocked up some lady who birthed Ian.

According to JP supplements and ROTDD, both Max and Kane are Ancients who were cryo-frozen to act as guardians of the Seal/wielders of the Swords of Light and Darkness, but Darksol fucked it up. (You can actually see the cryo-machines in SF1, but they don't explain what it is). They did a Helluva lot of alluding to things you never got to experience, but that didn't feel that odd at the time. It was like how in Star Wars they always talked about the stuff that would have eventually become the prequel trilogy, you just kinda rolled with it as some ongoing conflict you were just a part of. The whole amnesia thing made it work well enough I guess.

Been playing it myself over the last couple days; can't really rec it though. The soul's there but it's all frontloaded; just finished up SMT 2 and I felt it far more engaging for similar amounts of tediousness. From my notes:

I have this on 'Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection'.... but totally played it on 3ds Picodrive instead.

Because this is NOT a game you play without speedup function. Even then I used the 2021 Ilya Indigo anti-grinding patch on the suggestion of a /vr/ anon - and you can IMMEDIATELY see why. The dungeon you step into within 5 minutes of starting the game is just a 20 minute trek towards one of the dumbest RPG beefgates I've ever seen; this giant enemy crab just scuttles around the corner and proceeds to push your shit in, and that was WITH the patched game freely giving me the sword/leather armor you would've had to grind for an hour+ for in the unpatched game, too. You start this up on an actual genesis, be prepared to mindlessly press C for ages before you can do more than dip your toe into dungeon crawling.

Beyond that:
-The game is nice about its dungeon design at least; it's labyrinthine right off the get-go, but unlike SMT or the like it actually has little environmental markers like torches or puddles to freshen the stank up a tad.
-The game's visuals in the town and NPC are also really striking in that unique Genesis way...
-It's just a shame they do jack all with them. You explore the town at the start of the game, see one legit humorous skit with your party members when they join up, and the the game CEASES TO UPDATE DIALOGUE OR PRESENT ANY SEMBLANCE OF TERTIARY GOALS FOR THE NEXT SIX HOURS OF PLAYTIME. It's such a fucking waste of a very decent world.

Neither of them are terribly long either so I feel like playing 1 and 2 back to back isn't too much of a stretch.
That said for both of them, remember that you can always retreat from battles, keep your XP and level stuff up that way if you are hitting a wall or want to level a character. 2 has some semi-random battles, but generally both games just have a few set missions that you can't go back to.

i gotta say, do 1 first anyway. one thing they DID get absolutely perfect is the progression of enemy strength, and its one thing that might feel bad in 2 depending on the difficulty you chose. its a shorter game, you understand the basics, you travel to awesome places, the god damn laser eye fight, some really cool battle musics. it gives you a chance to really understand what you're getting into. some of 1 can be a terrible slog, like battlefields being 100% trees/mountains, and having annoying 1 tile chokepoints for no reason, or if you want to egress and farm up a new addition to the team that is a bit underpowered upon joining, but its a really good story and experience overall. and then when you get to 2, its a very different experience, but you WILL notice every QoL improvement, and you WILL appreciate it.

>Who is the most overrated party member? Underrated?
Which game? What kind of run are we talking about?
But generally speaking, all archers are underrated as a class. Also people consider Luke from SFCD weak, when he gets absurd stats after promotion. Randolf from SF2 is the least popular choice at Creed's mansion, despite being quite strong.
As for overrated members it's harder to say because most units in SF games are strong one way or another. Maybe Jaro or Sorcerer Kazin? I've seen people swearing by the pegasus, but he got the same problem as the all promoted characters. And sorcerers are more restrictive than good old wizards.

for SF1, almost everyone takes off to do great after promotion. however, i think the birds might be overrated. flying cool, but it just doesnt feel worth it. also bleu and adam might be strong eventually, but so is everyone else. the amount of dedicated feeding you need to do in order to make them catch up and perform, you could have beaten the game already by then. not sure if anyone can really count as underrated because everyone does pretty fine post promotion, it just sucks getting some of them there.

for SF2, sarah is easily the most overrated character. she struggles to keep up because healing is only 10exp, even though that puts her ahead of fighters in the end game so she can each max level 10x faster, she's still the slowest growth of any of the 4 healers, and doesnt come with useful other spells. karna and frayja get aura, karna and sheela get boost. she's ugly, and anyone disingenuously posting her mastermonk look forgets that its just a recolor of sheela, so therefor sheela is the better looking one. the sprite doesnt even have the elf ears, because it uses sheela's human ears, because its HER sprite. other than sarah, i think sorcs are probably overrated. atlus 2 is a cool spell, but its so late to get, and the other spells arent REALLY that great, especially when you could just nuke with blaze/freeze. if you're running 2 mages, you'd be better with wizard tyrin/chaz than any sorcs. as for underrated, i know that other characters can do "better" by building pre-promotion stats, but i think zynk, claude, and lemon do just fine, and there arent really that many battles left to worry about.

>> No.9470198

>>9470159
Bleu is obscenely good though. Also birds might be underrated, since it's harder to keep them at the same level as the other Force members
Also Sarah is fine since her base stats are good. The only thing that stops her from dealing as much damage as other Force members is that new staves are delayed in stores compared to other weapons. You might easily fix that with the ring for attack, since you get it early on and there is no one else who needs it.

The birds, Bleu, and Domingo, just like Peter in SF2, are amazing. In a game where 1/3 of all maps are all negative terrain and where 3/3 have traversable walls being able to fly is absolutely busted. That concept works for Fire Emblem as well and those maps are usually better designed than the SF maps are.

Sarah doesn't get access to Aura and is better off with the Monk orb anyway, she and Karna both actually. Sacrificing a little bit of MP growth for the ability to actually deal damage without using MP is a non-choice.

>> No.9470393

>>9470229
oh, so they can outpace the entire team and get surrounded? oh, so good! and i didnt say anything about the mastermonk class's merits, i said she is still dogshit compared to the other healers who not only outpace her in growth rate, but also in what they bring to the team.

>>9470198
bleu really isnt that special. maybe slightly better than some of the others, but christ do you have to work for it. and if you're leveling up other people too, at that point you're pretty much 1-shotting everything with everyone anyway, and it literally does not matter. also, sarah is a hindrance to the force. she cant keep up unless she kills. if she's killing, your fighters arent getting experience and you'll probably have to redo some fights to catch up. you're slowing your entire game down just to cater to someone who provides nothing of substantial value. also, if she's getting kills, who is doing the healing? you can pick pretty much any fighter type to do the killing better than her, so why are you being so inefficient by making her kill, and some fighter use healing items for 3/4 of the game until you get another healer? there is no point to putting in that much effort just for sarah. she is not special in any capacity. "but heal never loses experience value!" oh good job, you've replayed the grind for 70 levels and finally hit the exp wall where she gains 10exp, and every other non-healer only gains 1exp for anything. at that point, you're just a turbo autist, and it literally doesnt matter anymore. she is hands down the most overrated character in 2.

No, you barely need to work for it. He's not Adam, where you have to put the work for him to end up worse than Bleu and Zylo.
>sarah is a hindrance to the force. she cant keep up unless she kills. if she's killing, your fighters arent getting experience and you'll probably have to redo some fights to catch up. you're slowing your entire game down just to cater to someone who provides nothing of substantial value. also, if she's getting kills, who is doing the healing? you can pick pretty much any fighter type to do the killing better than her, so why are you being so inefficient by making her kill, and some fighter use healing items for 3/4 of the game until you get another healer?
And why, again, she can't both kill and heal? And how is she stealing exp from other fighters any more than the fighters are stealing it from each other?
Honestly, if you need healing every turn, you're playing SF wrong. And I don't mean that I don't have Sarah use heal every turn that she doesn't do anything else (as long as she got enough MP to actually heal others twice or thrice per battle), but it's just a trade of excess MP for free XP, not a necessity.
And what I'm saying about Sarah, doesn't apply just to her. In SF1 Lowe, Khris and Torasu are also doing decent damage, even if just to soften the monsters, since otherwise it would be wasted XP. When you don't have anything better to do, you can always just unga bunga with them and it works, esp since they can tank some damage then just heal themselves.

every turn? no. but you're GOING to get hit, so you should heal it up. she doesnt HAVE excess mp for quite some levels, in which time she will most likely fall behind. again, my point stands of "why would you bother to feed this dead weight, instead of replacing her with literally anyone to do the job better?". healers have shit for agility too, so they tend to come up last/late in the turn. if your healer is up and in position to deal damage, you probably didnt play aggressively enough with your fighters. also that would probably mean that the monster has hit somebody, so theres probably damage to heal. if you want another fighter in the mix, pick a fighter that can actually fight, instead of slowing your game down to cater to her. give everyone a healing drop or something. if you want a healer, bring an actual healer that can do her job better. she is literally not worth the effort. she is overrated as fuck from all of you dipshit clowns that praise her for being so "amazing" when she does absolutely nothing special, and only moderately performs after catering to her for the entire game to make sure she doesnt happen to fall behind from her own mediocrity.

>thank you for [delusions]
Autistic anon, I just entered here, just for your fragile ego to understand that everyone who disagrees with you isn't the same person.
I did not conceded a single thing, even if your pathetic ego urges for it like it's something really valuable.
I always liked to play Shining Force with all the core members, the ones that are always involved on the plot and cutscenes instead of just new faces that won't talk a thing the rest of the game. Why? It is a RPG. It is about roleplay. And I want to feel immersed on the story. I want to enjoy the characters alive. I want to see their personalities, opinions and feelings and also to imagine what they feel and think on the battles. It's also a reason why I want every battle to be hard. I want to feel the struggle. And SFII is already easy enough. I don't need to put some literal whos just because they are stronger. Making things even easier to betray my immersion of roleplaying? How boring.
Yes, I think that Sarah is cute. Yes, I like her eyes and yes I think her personality is concrete and acceptable. I really liked how she treated Slade when she found out he was responsible for releasing Zeno. It was a realistic reaction.
>b-but resprite..b-but recolour
The engine has limitations, yes, but since it is a RPG, it is made for roleplaying and immersion and I get satisfied enough with this.
>b-b-but the stats
As I said, the game is easier enough and I always enjoyed how Sarah sometimes had crit hits and finished enemies with damage beyond of what I could expect.
>y-youre just coping
It's what your miserable brain thinks to make you feel more comfortable. Being wrong, right or whatever about this very old game doesn't means much to me. RPGs will be RPGs. It will be always about the players immersions in the end. Other people will have different tastes, yes, but at least I don't go judging the experiences by just stats and other sprite issues.
Seeing an old dude acting like this is so pathetic.

>every turn? no. but you're GOING to get hit, so you should heal it up.
Not doing that before the danger zone until she gets excess MP though.
>she doesnt HAVE excess mp for quite some levels, in which time she will most likely fall behind.
She gets enough MP for that around the time you leave Grans.
>again, my point stands of "why would you bother to feed this dead weight, instead of replacing her with literally anyone to do the job better?".
Because you got a very small party for the battles until you leave Grans? After which she gets excess MP and can heal herself or anyone else nearby nearly every turn? And you literally can't replace her until you are around level 20 anyway, at which point you can either make her a Vicar with a Goddess Staff, give her a Vigor Ball and promote to Master Monk or keep her as an additional heal dispenser, since apparently, you love healing everyone for 3 HP or something and Karna wouldn't be able to do that by herself (not to mention that would lock you into exclusively picking her, when objectively it's the worst choice since it means you'll have to grind any of the other Creed units or give up on some of the best units in the game).
>healers have shit for agility too, so they tend to come up last/late in the turn. if your healer is up and in position to deal damage, you probably didnt play aggressively enough with your fighters.
If you would look at screenshot above, she got the same agility as Bowie at the same level.
Btw, I didn't reroll nor egressed in the run, so that's what you get without the grind. She also got less kills than anyone else in the picture + Slade. Same as Kiwi, who joined later (now that one guy you actually got to feed).
>also that would probably mean that the monster has hit somebody, so theres probably damage to heal.
Again, wouldn't bother if it's not critical (either the unit would die in one hit or there is a lot of monsters around who can focus it).

she doesnt get "excess" mp until at LEAST ribble.
>Karna wouldn't be able to do that by herself
um, what? karna does anything sarah can do, but better. she's a great pick from creed's. a lot of people pick her first, and a lot of people dont give a shit about they leave behind. she's a fantastic choice because she gets boost AND aura, which you wouldnt otherwise get until the return to grans, which is quite some time. personally, i prefer tyrin, as he gets freeze and bolt, and i pick her up after moun. she's the easiest to catch up in levels due to boost/aura not being dependent on levels and granting her the fastest RATE of exp without issue.
>agility
still the tail end of the turn, like i said. sequence of events plays out the same. and again, especially once you start getting more fighters in your team, there is no reason for her to be taking experience from them. your guys should be swarming over and surrounding enemies if you're doing it right. that doesnt usually leave the healer with an avenue of attack. and again, why spread monster experience out to a mediocre healer?

like all you fags can do is say "because i just WANT to ok?" and thats fine. but my point is the simping for her being "soooo great" when she objectively isnt. she's overrated. yes, you "can" feed any unit and make them perform, but to say that she is anything special is just a lie or hard cope for all of the effort it took to get her there.

>she doesnt get "excess" mp until at LEAST ribble.
How so? You won't need more than 15 MP (and that's being generous) and she would hit that mark earlier than that.
>what? karna does anything sarah can do, but better.
Can you read? Karna would be able to heal twice in a round by herself before she would get Aura, not to mention that you would need to pick her first.
>inb4 you would get Frayja soon anyway
You was the one who said that you need someone to constantly heal others with "But who would heal if she fights?" argument, not me.
>re: Creed choice
I'm not saying that Karna is bad or worse than Sarah. I'm saying that people are really overlooking Eric and Randolf or don't consider that it would be easier to pick Tyrin now than later when picking her. So essentially we say the same thing about Karna.
>still the tail end of the turn, like i said.
That's before Jaha and Kiwi. Also early on it's also before Peter.
>once you start getting more fighters in your team, there is no reason for her to be taking experience from them.
Why, at this point I usually have to feed newcomers (and Kiwi) instead, as Sarah is mostly self-sufficient.
>your guys should be swarming over and surrounding enemies if you're doing it right. that doesnt usually leave the healer with an avenue of attack.
Swarming over into a bunch of enemies successfully means keeping your Force together just outside of enemy radius and attacking at the same time or laying a trap with a bulky tank and waiting until enemies would come to you first. Unless you're doing some challenge run, SF isn't nearly as complex to go that slow.
And the only explanation that I find for your healers not being at frontlines is you wasting the opportunities by holding them back.
>and again, why spread monster experience out to a mediocre healer?
Why not? There are usually enough for everyone, at least as far as softening them up goes. I do feed kill XP to fighters that need to catch up though, which is rarely Sarah.

Between lack of some QoL features, colors not being as bright, lack of proper characterization for starting troops (except for Lowe, I guess) and feeling of an ongoing war with constant treachery and stuff instead of a fun adventure, I can certainly see why.
>Would I feel the same about the other games?
Not exactly the same, but you might not like them for other reasons. I would recommend you at least to try SFCD, since it's similar in feel to SF2, except for lacking exploration. The plot is more "cinematic" though.

>all of the effort it took to get her there.
What effort? With healers it only takes time, no thought whatsoever. No positioning, no finishing off enemeis, you just waste all your MP in a battle and repeat as much as you like. You're technically right that it's extra attention, but taking an extra few minutes at the end of battles to waste her remaining MP is such a minor thing. Healers are still the easiest to level by far. Much easier than making someone like Slade or Kiwi good.

>> No.9471801

Healers = guaranteed XP every turn
10 XP a round means 30MP spent = 1 level. Even without egressing, you're guaranteed to steadily gain levels. No worrying about who gets the kill. Plus you can fill her inventory with healing herbs and get 10 XP per herb on top of it (healers get more experience using healing items too).

>overlooking Eric and Randolf
yes, 2 generic fighters, of which we have plenty already, and will get more along the way still to come. if you REALLY have a hardon for eric's dreamy eyes, then pick him first and tyrin can still technically function on his own if you pick him up later with karna (albeit in a moderately crippled way that late in the game) because spell damage is set and not dependent on stats. tyrin and karna actually provide noticeable benefits for your team.
>before Jaha and Kiwi
i definitely said "last/late in a turn". being before only 2 others is still late. thats still "the tail end", even if it isnt specifically dead last.
>you shouldnt be using her to take experience from fighters
>"why, at this point i usually have to feed newcomers"
i accept your concession that i was right, and she shouldnt be taking experience from fighters.
>if you can swarm them you're going slow
you have officially cemented yourself as irredeemably retarded and having zero idea what you're talking about. an enemy can be surrounded by 4 units at most. the moment you come into attack range, they go all out to over extend and attack you. they brought themself to your front line. all you have to do just keep moving forward as usual, and attack while you land next to them. that surrounds them. you have more than 4 fighters (and ranged units), and most monsters shouldnt even take 4 hits.

Not putting her on a pedestal, it's just you're acting like she's a bad unit when she's not. People aren't accepting your arguments because they're bad. You've been ranting about Sarah on /vr/ for years now. If you don't want people arguing with you over it, don't post it so much.

As far as overrated or not, Sarah might be a bit overrated to the extent that some people online have exaggerated and called her the best unit when Peter is clearly the best. And you can argue about whether calling her better than the other healers is overrating her (this random tier list for example). But she's still somewhere in the upper end rather than a poor unit. Someone like Slade (while strong) takes much more babysitting.

Keep in mind items too, if you want you can give Vicar Sarah a goddess staff (or multiple staves) for 0 MP Aura 2 casting. Gets you lots of experience and you can repair them for free using the caravan.

There's some other things in her favor. She also does more damage than the other healers. Even as a Vicar she has decent attack, while Karna gains nothing as a Vicar. Sheela's stats are pretty poor compared to the other Monks.

Slow is a better spell than Boost
"Boost/Slow gives +/-37.5% Def and Agi on the 1st turn ,25% the 2nd and 12.5% the 3rd The change in Agi can get you 2 turns in a row but as you pay the Agi back, the turn order can swap back at a bad time netting them 2 turns but with Slow nothing is going to live for long as units like Janet will deal real damage and gain more exp."
https://www.reddit.com/r/ShiningForce/comments/j1kha9/sf2_how_do_you_use_sarah/

All this is just nitpicking for fun anyway, it's an easy enough game (even on Super) that none of it matters much.

>you can argue about whether calling her better than the other healers is overrating her
i absolutely am doing that.
>you're acting like she's a bad unit when she's not
she's extremely mediocre and takes extra steps in order to keep up and compensate for her lack of utility, on top of being outclassed by the other healers
>vicar and goddess staff
oh look, you can take extra steps to help her carry you through to the return to grans. also in doing this you arent pushing for 40, so thats lost stats for your calculations too.
>more damage
gains a slight amount more on average, which really doesnt mean much.
>sheela's stats are poor in comparison
and yet she gains at a higher rate and provides better utility
>slow is better than boost
this i heartily disagree. you wont even get slow 2 until like what, tristan? for many units there is a chance to miss. the enemies have to be in a favorable formation for it matter, which is pretty rare. meanwhile, with boost you control the formation and which units you boost. personally, i can not recall a single instance where i had an "unfavorable" turn order where it expired and they ate shit to 2 turns of enemy combat. you can hardcore unga bunga forward and should never be in a situation where you didnt wipe the immediate engagement in 3 turns. also you can cast boost and go out on your merry way in a variety of ways. slow requires not only the enemy formation to be receptive, but for sarah to be able to get in range to even cast it. again, you control the efficiency of boost. he doesnt list any bosses, but i would imagine slow doesnt work on bosses either, so thats another point in boost's favor.

so yes, i still contest that sarah is wildly overrated.

To be fair, I should have grinded but my save got me totally stuck in a spot where basically this one sequence in I think the fourth level where the blonde fucker with all his knights with spears fucking rape the entire team.

The fact that he's basically OP is the gayest part of that map. Typical gay kind of RPG cliche where the tough dude is surrounded by a million henchmen.

Either way it's my fault for not grinding in the "town" part but that game was so fucking long by that point so I really don't have the time to go back. I wish there was a "restart level" option in the menu or by the main character etc though.

Ultimately it's my fault. Plus the shadows keep fucking up on the sprites which is a known issue with emulators for that ROM.

>are you making ESL mistakes
Yes, in that case it's that, though I'm not sure would/wouldn't is ESL thing and not lack of attention to properly argue with some retard on mongolian basket weaving forums.
>yes, 2 generic fighters, of which we have plenty already
What we have by that point is trash in comparison though.
>i definitely said "last/late in a turn". being before only 2 others is still late. thats still "the tail end", even if it isnt specifically dead last.
And being after 3 others (at that point) and on par with some of your strongest fighters like Bowie, doesn't make a tail end, especially considering that one of those guys (Kazin) you wouldn't want to be on the edge of the front line and another (Chester) got shit movement on some of the tiles slowing him down.
>i accept your concession that i was right, and she shouldnt be taking experience from fighters.
How would she take EXP from them if they didn't join yet?
>an enemy can be surrounded by 4 units at most
You mean one enemy unit? Sure. Most of them are in groups though and all of this is just an ideal scenario that doesn't happen all that much.
>by the time your healer even gets their turn, the enemy should be dead.
Why? Some of your strongest fighters are slower.
>in the case of a slow enemy attacking late in the order and a space IS still open, why would you want to take up a space with sarah's paltry damage?
Why not, as you said, between enemies on the screen and units that attack from range, there's enough place to put Sarah there. As for damage being smaller than stronger units, it's literally irrelevant, someone else would likely last hit it anyway.
>why not heal up the unit that got attacked?
Early on, it's a waste. Later on, you'll be able to do that afterwards anyway, since there are usually down turns in between.
>why not save that space for an actual fighter to get damage or kill experience?
Because they are late or attacking someone else and I got to UNGA BUNGA.

I'm saying the "extra steps" you're talking about are so minor and effortless it's hardly a negative.
>oh look, you can take extra steps to help her carry you through to the return to grans. also in doing this you arent pushing for 40, so thats lost stats for your calculations too.
Like getting and equipping an item for example. Nobody said you can't go to 40 doing this either (it would make getting to 40 easier actually). If you're considering 40 promotions, Sheela drops off even more.
>and yet she gains at a higher rate and provides better utility
Sheela gains at a lower rate than both Karna and Sarah as monks. See pic related.
>for many units there is a chance to miss
Somebody tested it, for most units you actually have a 100% chance to hit. Slow also lowers enemy defense, making it easier for your other party members to kill and get experience (everybody can hit harder, not just the boosted units).
>so yes, i still contest that sarah is wildly overrated.
I can accept "overrated compared to Karna and Freyja," but "extremely mediocre" doesn't sound right when she's still more useful than over half of the units you get.

Yeah, I don't fully agree with that tier list. His justification for Rhode over the archers is weak I think. Especially considering Elric and Janet can be promoted at 40. This is what he wrote:
>Elric actually joins at a terrible time (which is before creeds mansion), if you don't bother to promote him and he continues to use the steel arrow you have at the time, he will only do 1 damage to all the enemies there, meaning the only way to make him relevant is to promote him and give him the robin arrow.

>Rhode gets more HP, more attack, and more Defense than Elric tank, Heck rhode gets a bit of a attack "spike" at the end game (it isn't humongous but its something) and even though Rhode's speed caps at a certain point, it's good to be a bit of an "indicator" when the turn cycle will end in the end-game with Rhode.

you cant use the goddess staff unless you promote to vicar. if you promote early, you didnt go to 40. if you went to 40, you've acquired the other, better healers by then. also using and repairing and item is tedious.

my argument of sheela gaining at a higher rate is that she literally has a higher rate of experience due to boost.

>slow
yes, i saw the chart. thats still a substantial amount of units it can miss on. i understand that it lowers defense, but again, she has to be in range to cast, and the value is determined by how many units she can hit. boost will last for 3 turns, and you can split up and go about your merry business. slow will change only a couple of monsters most of the time, and only if sarah is the one in range. again, YOU CONTROL HOW EFFECTIVE BOOST IS. wrangling with the ai to try and get the best slow is tedious and unnecessary.

Played through the GBA version of Shining Force after seeing this thread. Hadn't played the original game in quite some time. Do people who promote at 20 just grind a lot or something? I thought I'd give it a try since I always promote early. Game was easy enough that I never really had to egress and so my characters only got near level 20 unpromoted at like chapter 7 and 8. I found some characters, especially those who didn't use weapons like Zylo, just became absolutely useless after waiting to 20 to promote because the stat loss crippled his attack to the point of dealing 1 or 2 points of damage to enemies. On top of the stat loss, a bunch of other characters had terrible levels after promoting which meant I basically fell behind significantly for the sole purpose of late game weapons. Just was weird; felt like I was punished for holding off on promotion while many others spoke of promoting early like it was handicapping yourself.

Short answer - keep playing your Force members will catch up to the previous stats in no time
Long answer -
I don't remember the exact problems, but RoDD got different mechanics, so that might be a part of the issue. Like, IIRC, mages progression is fucked in RoDD either way, since it doesn't count pre-promotion levels for spells.
Either way, you should probably get a ton of XP now that game will treat you as if you were 10 levels lower, so recovering stats should be easy + newer weapons should make it up for characters that got them. As for characters without weapons, you might want to give them the ring that boosts the attack and maybe use items that permanently raise the attack, if you got any.
Or abuse Narsha to buff everyone, that works too. Not even going to mention Mawlock.
That said, chapter 7 and 8 is late as fuck. I usually hit it around chapter 6 with very minimal grind (I love having my Force members all promoting at the same time, so once more than one non-healer character gets to the cap I start egressing to catch the rest up which usually is like a level or two).

So according to the manga you can get infected by Dark Dragon cells which slowly morph you into a new Dark Dragon. Dark Dragon being a super-biomechanical lifeform that regenerates from almost anything is the entire reason he was sealed away instead of destroyed way back when.

The main character here essentially gets superpowers from exposure at the cost of the usual battling his inner demons shit. I forgot the explanation as to why it progresses so fast/unlocks powers in him as opposed to just turning him into a monster. It's been a while.

If you think it's insane now, wait until later. In the supplements Alterone is noted as being rich as fuck. Here, they spend that money on hiring a bunch of Prompt soldiers armed with Ancient weapons along with an airship fleet. Those dudes with the machine guns were only the start.

Also Rune is either Earth in the far-future and Dark Dragon was originally defeated by the USA nuking the hell out of it, or at least one character is from Earth and has a nightmare about that happening.

You're not supposed to fight him. You have to have his sister talk to him. It's even easier to do that if you took the time to spam heals with her while having other people fight in the arena as if she hits level 20 she becomes the most OP character in the game. Raquesis isn't dead, is she? If not your save is definitely not dead and you can keep going. Hell if she dies after you have her talk to her brother you'll still be fine.

>I wish there was a "restart level" option in the menu or by the main character etc though.
You didn't keep a save at the very start of each chapter? The game offers you 4 save spots. I always make the top one the beginning of a new chapter and the bottom one an auto-save that you can toggle in the menu to appear for every turn and use the middle for differing spots like a castle being conquered in the chapter.
