Is it just me or is this game, especially the Japanese version, 100 times harder than Mario World? Even during the first few worlds. And then there are worlds 7 and 8 that are just insane

Difference is, mario 3 has short but dense levels, while mario world has long but sparse levels, 3 doesn't have any checkpoints while world has. Not to mention with yoshi you can tank any hits and with cape you can just fly over 97% of the levels, which is easy as there are lots of space to get into full speed and theres rarely anything to stop you in the skies, 3 is opposite and you can only fly for short period of time while having to mash A too.

You're misremembering things anon, the original SMB1 didn't have continues at all. That's why it's such a pain in the ass. It's hard to earn lives and losing a powerup just once during the later stages can result in literally everything going wrong and you getting a game over. Luckily the SNES remake did away with this

I dunno, I think they're equally hard, more or less. As another anon said, 3's levels are pretty short.
Doing Outrageous as small Mario-only is really fucking hard, that levels keeps getting crazier as it goes. The only thing that makes it not as hard is the fact you can have Yoshi and an extra item, but then again in 3 you can hoard a few P-wings.

They key is to always move forward and whip the shit out of the knights. When you see a medusa head just jump forward and never stop whipping. When you advance the knights always retreat so don't worry about getting hit by their bodies and your whip should take care of their axes as long as you don't stop mashing the attack button. Stage 4 is much worse than Stage 5, if you can beat Frankenstein and his little buddy then you can beat the game

Just got done replaying SMW right after SMB3. The worst levels are the special-4 and special-7 but overall the game is very easy compared to the original trilogy. If anything I didn't use the cape to fly through levels
