What's your opinion on /vr/ handheld fighting games? Which ones are your favorite? Preferrably the ones that were custom made for handhelds, not simple downgraded ports (i.e. SFA3 for GBA)

the neo geo pocket ones are overrated. they all run on the same damn engine and none of them are better than console fighters

They're not supposed to be "better" they're supposed to be handheld fighters.

Also, it's at least better than SNK vs Capcom Chaos or whatever the fuck.

kof 95 on the gameboy was my very first fighting game ever, I played the shit out of it. I remember being obsessed with nakoruru after finding the cheat code to unlock her on gamefaqs, I didn't even know until years later what series she originated from, I just thought it was cool she had a bird.

coincidentally I actually just gave it a try earlier today for the first time since I was a kid and holy shit does it feel weird. you feel preposterously stiff and leaden when moving around on the ground and throwing out attacks but then at the merest touch of a jump input you rocket RIGHT the fuck outta there across the screen. it feels fuckin spastic. the lil chunky sprites sure are cute though.

Pocket fighter on wonderswan works pretty well considering that game was 2 buttons to begin with.

Plays pretty great if you can get over the not Dpad. Then again not much reason to play this over the original lol

They were okay. They were there if you REALLY had to play a fighting game outside your house and they achieved that purpose, aiming a younger audience with a casual approach.
My favorite is a downgrade because it was the first GBA game I got — Guilty Gear X: Advance Edition.
Call it Stockholm syndrome because it was all I could play for a time, but it was my introduction to the series and I found a liking for the downgraded soundtrack and how fast the game played despite the sprites being glorified smudges on the screen.

Comparing SNES/Genesis SF games to GBC SFA port:
>Better graphics
>Better sound
>Closer to the original arcade versions
>6-button controls
>Were released within a year from the arcade version unlike GBC SFA which is a 2000 release - five years too late

>> No.9413991

>>9413849

We can agree on better sound. Music also, why not. And not because I enjoy the work Capcom did with those console sound chips. Did you enjoy that Guile theme on SNES? Being better than the GBC don't speak too much in that regard.

Graphic wise, the attention and effort put in a CPS2 to GBC port is nothing short of admirable. It's the impossible port, and yet Crawfish Interactive delivered. They trimmed detail of the backgrounds in order to save resources and yet backgrounds are recognizable, beautiful and cleaner. They cut the futile, they got all the moves and stable frame rates in an 8-bit NES grade hardware.
The SNES console was at it's prime and yet it's a better than nothing port. Low effort to take advantage of its features, missed opportunity to add transparencies for fireballs. Capcom got the safe route and yet it had slowdowns.

Maybe it would made more sense if i had compared to the SF Alpha SNES port, but the thing is: when I want to play SF II the SNES/Gen ports are needless to me, but I always have room for the GBC SF Alpha for being the awesome port it is.

I was amazed at the fact that I had Tekken in my pocket. It translated well to GBA (only 2 buttons), and no characters were neutered. It's something of a mix between Tekken 3 and 4.

SNK vs Capcom on NGPC is amazing. Plays very smoothly despite the underpowered hardware, especially with that clicky stick. I own two copies. Now I just need to find a 2nd NGPC and a link cable, lol. I bought it digitally on Switch as well.
As much as I love the game though, anyone who thinks it's okay for fighting games to force the player to grind the game to unlock characters has clearly never had to unlock all the characters and moves in SNKvC 3 fucking times.

This and Samsho on GG are underrated.
They play as reasonably well as the GB games but with full sized sprites and in color, technically superior to both the GB versions and those bootleg ports of SF/MK on the NES.

There cool little time wasters but you can only do so much with a portable fighter.

The best ones are made with being portable in mind like SNK vs Capcom NGP and not a lazy cash grab downgrade.

>>9414785
This. Two buttons can work way better than you'd think it would as long as the game was designed with that in mind. Moves that ordinarily need more than 2 buttons just get changed to a different command that also makes sense. Zangief's Lariat has two versions done with a QCB + punch or kick, and Gouki's Raging Demon is now a charge super (hold b, f, b, f) with punch. Sakura's take on the Raging Demon is done the same way.

I played a number of them. Game Boy ports pretty much all suck though SNK was most capable of doing it right. Neo Geo Pocket took a hot shit on everything else that I've played. I haven't played any on game gear or lynx and basically nothing on wonderswan for fighters, except for one piece grand colosseum or whatever it was called.

I got a neo geo pocket color back around 2007, they had taken old stock and put it into a blister pack with six games and you could buy it new for all of 40 dollars. I have fond memories from younger days of playing KoF R-2. It's where I first got my taste of the series. Even in SD form, Athena and Yuri were cute, Mai was smokin hot, and Rugal was a douche. The music was awesome too.

I also had a few other games, but nothing else really captured my interest. Even got a flash cart and still found myself not that into the library, so finally I sold it a few years ago. Was pleasantly surprised about how much people pay for them. Frankly though I don't know why you'd bother unless you wanted a novelty thumb stick to try and then sell. I enjoyed it but you're just as well to emulate the full versions nowadays.

I have tried MotM for the first time ever via emulation and holy shit it's good! Very easy to pull off motion specials and combos and it feels great when they connect - something not every full scale fighting game can be proud off. Also I dig super deformed style.

If Virtua Fighter 5 can pull off the largest move list in the fighting games genre with only three buttons, one of which is a block button, I don't see the problem with making a typically small 2D fighting game move list work with two buttons.
