I'm convinced F2P is the only genuine way to play RuneScape. Full rune set, the strongest free armor, is way more iconic than any of that shit the members use in today's meta. And do you really need more than OP's map?

Barrows was alright at first once they nerfed it with durability. Dragon couldn't be the best tier forever but it was still useful.

The beginning of the end didn't start until GWD when basically everything except the zammy spear ran laps around the old gear and then never got nerfed for balance.

F2p was indeed a demo, but a huge one at that. At a time where efficiency was not the mainstream it took quite some time to get through all the content in F2P. Luckily with how much advertising Jagex did, especially with miniclips, there was a HUGE influx in players (which some old heads would argue did the game more harm than good since it was mostly children, retards and retarded children, but hey what more do you expect from an mmo player base.) These two factors combined made one hell of an experience. One that will never be replicated in an mmo ever again. and certainly one a lot of losers will hold on to for the rest of their life. When any old player gets retrospective about F2P it's because of that. It was the fresh climb up the skill ladder. The social interactions with people who had no filter whatsoever. Finishing that lever puzzle on Ernest the Chicken before realizing you could have looked up the solution to it 30 minutes prior. Yes, I remember the feeling of finally passing the taverly gate or going through the Shanty Pass for absolutely no reason, but after the initial dopamine hit I just instantly though "Ok, well time to start doing something now." It was just a new coat of paint. This isn't a bad thing of course. I'm just sympathizing with the f2pwankers.

Yeah, it's basically this. I think the original F2P quests just feel like a perfectly encapsulated game. Yeah, you were teased with members only skills that don't really matter (agility, thieving, herblore, boring. Fletching is the only one I wish F2P had), you were teased with locations, but, you don't need to go there. They're in fact barren empty wastelands today outside of a handful agility training courses where people spend hours clicking cookies so they can jump over a wall in Varrock. All of the skills that matter can be experienced in the F2P worlds, and grinding up to beat Dragon Slayer feels like a satisfying conclusion to a never ending experience. If you do go members, I'd say go members after beating Dragon Slayer, the old school way. Otherwise if you're new to the game, starting fresh out on members is a good way to walk around aimlessly but not a good way to play the game. If you're looking up wiki strats on your first time that's also not how to play the game.

>>9395829
Yeah I think people are writing off just how massive F2P actually is. Even today it's way more populated than members world, and that's taking out the bots. Members worlds are empty barren wastelands, people go there to train skills alone anti-socially.

Rs2 oldfag here. I don't even know what the solution is. Only select kinds of players would stay if they didn't implement new gear, but the more gear they add the more alienating and frankly abatrary the game becomes. Even if they just implemented alternatives the game just ends up looking tacky. All mmos have life spans and honestly I feel like osrs has far ran it's course. Through all the bitching will I still play it? Ofc Bongex has my soul and thousands if not billions of my dollars.

>> No.9397880

>>9397717

For the longest time Runescape had a very horizontal progression. There wasn't really a set in stone gear path, new gear was usually either a side grade or else a very incremental improvement (and often times fairly difficult to acquire). Gear that was just a straight upgrade (like all the GWD toys) was very very rare.

Every since the game went through its identity crisis phase they've just been shitting out new tier after new tier like it's world of warcraft or something. Even OSRS has been like this lately ever since they let raid autism infest that game too.

>> No.9398035

Thinking over i'd tend to agree, I joined in '05 and since then a ton of things have changed with respect to combat. I remember when slayer was introduced and it changed the way everyone viewed the game; everyone was hard-focused on the whip.
Looking back i'd say another option would be to add another skill that has some roots tied into PvM the way slayer did, but I don't get paid to think what that may be so I can't say what it would entail. The best bet would be to look towards RS3 for that answer. As much as I dislike RS3, a lot of content form that version of the game got retranslated into osrs (demon gorillas, the gauntlet, etc.)
As someone who has been playing for a long time, a new PvM skill would really revitalize the game, as opposed to introduce harder content and upping that with more meta-breaking gear, especially since this meta-breaking gear(raids) isn't really necessary to do 99.9% of PvM content.
Unfortunately any attempts to introduce a new skill will most likely be met with dismemberment at the polls.

Tutorial Island has always been admittedly a shitty tutorial that barely teaches you anything but at least it always had soul. Burning your shrimp while Newbie Melody is playing is top tier shit.

Basically every other attempt at a tutorial has always been bloated and awful. I remember that awful tutorial that was an instanced version of Lumbridge where you had to run around getting supplies to kill a dragon in a basement, which was definitely a better attempt at trying to teach people how to actually play the game, but shoving new players into slaying a fucking dragon in an RPG is always a bad sign. I think they ended up deleting that one and then just sending players back to tutorial island, but then later on they replaced it with another excessively epic tutorial about fighting trolls in taverly or something. No idea what they do now.

Oh yeah. Runescape's always had a real identity crisis from like 2009 up until like 2018 with all the weird directions the game was trying to go in at the same time with the constant halfassed attempts at graphic updates, microtransactions, storylines, and coping with the trade limit BS. It did feel like the game was starting to come back around 2012 but EoC and later OSRS just set everything back to square one.

I definitely don't blame anyone for still wanting to avoid RS3 if they lived through EoC jank, but the game is a hell of a lot better off now than it was 5 years ago. You're not gonna have a nostalgic time playing RS3 or anything (that's what OSRS is for, but even then that has its own problems now) but it's a much more cohesive experience, Even if it does still have some graphics that haven't been properly updated ever.

The fuck? RS3 is a bizarre mishmash of old and new and it's one of the least cohesive games out there, although almost none are as long running. The game is packed to the gills with dead content and feature creep, with entire skills like construction made useless and redundant nowadays. Not to mention mtx trivializing most skilling methods and destroying the in game economy. Osrs has done a much better job keeping updates in line with the original game's style, almost to a detriment since there will likely never be a new skill added to the game.

I don't see how Tutorial Island was bad. It covered all of the basics and could be completed in less than 20 minutes, probably much less if you're an experienced player just clicking through. I guess the only flaw is that it could never be returned to for newbies who had forgotten things, but that's why they eventually added the Lumbridge tutors (thought I never liked how they stood out with their stupid clothes and cluttered up the town).

Private servers for old MMOs tend to be better. You're automatically filtering out normies who just follow trends and getting players who genuinely enjoy the experience. For FFXI you could try Eden or Wings. For WoW vanilla, there's a fresh server that launched last week called Everlook. I wouldn't recommend retail FFXI or Classic WoW, full of the same minmax cancer you are talking about.

In the context of Runescape the only private servers that have an active population are ones focused on pvp/gambling (what's the difference) and are bloated with weirdo custom content. The ones that try to focus on on all aspects of the game usually have stupid xp rates and if they don't then the normies don't end up sticking with it for more than a few days if that.
