It's more dark fantasy than horror, same category as DarkStalkers and Ghost n Goblins. Though I'd play any of those over Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Zombies Ate My Neighbors is pretty chill, though

Not really "horror", but perfect Halloween atmosphere games.
SCIV has the heaviest ambiance and most consistent spooky tone, and the most classic-sounding music. It's all straight up ghosts and skeletons and spiders and shit. Later games get too far into gag enemy and modern reference territory.

The CoD one is a bit too ambitious for what the system could pull off.
The Symphony version is the best, but the setup and buildup to the Aria of Sorrow boss is great too

Love me some Castlevania, but if you want some alternatives, might I recommend Nosferatu. It's a Prince of Persia clone where your fists do the talking.

That's the problem with it really; this sort of grid-snapped gameplay isn't great for straight action, and it shows (specially with the boss fights)
Still a pretty underrated game though yeah

Yeah because of how shit and gay they are

>> No.9378267

horror games require a certain vulnerability and ominous atmosphere that cv games don't have to any significant degree. I think you could transplant a few of the boss fights into a horror game but then in that case it''d be the situations where horror games cross over to action like late game resident evil.

There is no problem with it. That's what a Prince of Persia clone is. And it works great, because you're not supposed to be fighting everything you see. It's literally the Resident Evil 4 of the SNES era.

>> No.9378673

It's more of an horror theme game rather than an horror game

>> No.9378678

>>9377768
It's hard to be afraid of anything in that game when you can completely lay the smackdown on the horrors you face. It goes from potentially scary, to hilarious, to totally fucking rad.
Taking on the supernatural with nothing but your two hands and a pair of brass balls is so cool.

RE4 is literally the first game in the series where you have to fight everyone otherwise you cannot proceed.

The NES games make the player feel a bit vulnerable just because of how easy it is to die and how commital your jump is. I remember being a bit spooked playing them when I was super young, and I think that contributed.

Obviously the haunted house-tier skellingtons and ghouls weren't scary on their own, but combined with how cautious you had to be, they did a good enough job of being scary for children. Anything past the NES makes you too badass to really feel vulnerable tho.

They have an undeniable theme centered around horror, the question is does horror have to be scary, because CV is anything but.

>> No.9381684

No, they're action games and they don't try to scare you or make you tense at all. They are just horror themed.

I love that the NES games' enemies are almost all pretty standard monsters, but then you get to the end of CV3 and for his second phase Dracula turns into several heads that drip blood and scream when they're attacked. I've always found that one of the most gruesome moments in the series. There's much gorier bits in later games but few enemies quite as weird or surprising as that.

This is the best version of the dungeon in the series, IMO. You get to see actual prisoners who are still alive, begging for freedom. You can see how they're injured and suffering, there's a huge grave, still bloody and with some organs, right under the floor, and then you finally get to the corpses, not skeletons, impaled on hooks and cut in half. Few stages represent the evils of Dracula and his minions than that stage.

Yeah I really like how baroque Castlevania 4's soundtrack is. The Toccata and Fugue in D minor informs a lot of Castlevania music, but 4's soundtrack really sounds like it took a lot of inspiration from Bach's chorale preludes BWV 645-650.

Listen to this, this sounds like it could be the stage music for a Castlevania 4 level
