I don't know why more developers didn't make it so that duplicate initials weren't displayed. Like, if five people named "TED" submitted their scores, only the TED with the highest score would be placed on the board so that other people would be listed as well instead of a long list of TEDs pushing everybody off.

I believe Williams did at least a few games like that. I know they're definitely the ones who let you put in a full fucking name if you got number one. So awesome.

Here's a scenario I'll use for two different complaints;
>Wandering through tunnel
>Path ahead splits in two directions

>Go left and continue on a ways
>Path is blocked
>Haha, you were supposed to go right and flick a switch to unblock the path, then head left
This sort of lame, uninspired puzzle makes dungeon crawling in old JRPGs really fucking tedious.

Similarly,
>Head left
>Tunnel collapses, rear path becomes impassable
>Some rare item was inevitably hidden on the right path
>Have the choice between continuing on or reloading your save
Fuck you.

If you speak english you read left to right, top to bottom. And, as you know, the secret to navigating a labyrinth is taking every left turn. Given a choice between exploring areas in two or more directions English speakers therefore tend to explore the left before the right.
Japanese people on the other hand read top to bottom, right to left and their level design is engineered with that in mind.
You eventually get used to this ideology, but come the fuck on.

I lol'd thinking about how you expect things to be laid out in some exact way and get mad when they aren't.

Both scenarios are more realistic than "good old lucky left" always working. (BTW, always taking the same turn, whether it's always left or always right, is the way to make it out of mazes...but that never takes into account real-time obstacles that can change your path permanently.)

>>943597
Well I don't work in a theme park (lucky!) or a supermarket, but supermarkets are designed around the same premise: People walk in and go right.

BTW, when I went to the CA state fair earlier this month, the rides and games and some of the shopping areas were all on the right (presumably to get you to spend money) and the animals and shows were all on the left. Main food areas were closer to the middle (but of course there were food vendors throughout). I thought that was pretty smart of them.

To be honest, I prefer it when getting the best shit isn't based on your level in combat. Think about it, how many battles do you fight getting all the best gear in Final Fantasy X for example? Geosgaeno (for Onion Knight), everything in the Calm Lands and Belgimine's aeons (For Nirvana), and a bunch of weak monsters in various areas (for Masamune's boosters). And those fights are piss-easy to any player with any level of skill.

I'd been spoiled ahead of time so I already knew who was leaving. I also knew how to keep them in the party (it involves abusing the relationships system and sucking their digital cock at every possible opportunity before they ditch you), which I immediately set out to do.

It actually ended up biting me in the ass, because it turned out that as much as I liked the original character, I liked their "replacement" far better, which I'd had no way of knowing beforehand because all I had to go off of was the excessively flowery artwork.
It just turned out he was so much more emotive, had a more interesting backstory, and even had slight (very, very slight, but still apparent) differences in battle that made him easier for me to control. But by that point I'd already invested so much effort into the original character that it was actually physically impossible to skew the results back to change my mind. And you can only keep one.

The replacement's fuckoff speech was pretty epic, though. Strangely yet gloriously meta.
> "I can't believe you'd betray us!"
> "BULLSHIT. You never cared about me until just now! You were against me from DAY ONE. Well now it's time for payback, fucker!"

I'm sorry, Zelos.

A study on supermarkets showed people want to enter on the right and keep the products to their right, walking counter-clockwise around the floor. Customers ignored little barriers and "wet floor" signs. Such was their desire to turn left.

I also recall, in Earthbound, a sign in a mazelike cave somewhere tells you you have a choice to turn right or left. I forget which way I went, but the next sign said "Did you know 70% of players choose to go right?" Probably based on Japanese stats. Rubber band AI refers to an artificial intelligence found in titles such as racing or sports titles that is designed to prevent players from getting too far ahead of computer-controlled opponents. When done well, such AIs can maintain a consistent level of challenge from the beginning of an event to the end. However, when done poorly, it becomes evident that the game is bending its own rules in the computer's favor, either by temporarily enhancing the CPU's abilities, inhibiting the abilities of the player's character(s), or both. As an example of how rubber band AI is designed, a complete description of the algorithm for such found in the Nintendo GameCube game Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is available in US Patent 7278913.

Although commonly associated with racing games such as the aforementioned Mario Kart series, similar AIs are also featured in both sports simulations and arcade titles. For example, in a football game, the opponent's quarterback may suddenly become un-blitzable when that team is behind by sixteen or more points. NBA Jam's rubber banding is notorious; if the AI team is behind, they will shove the player mercilessly and drive past them for unblockable dunks, while the player's own dunks and shots suddenly become noticeably less accurate.

Can we all agree that is bullshit?

>> No.959164

>>959147
The most ridiculous is what I have come to call "Blitz bullshit", which is extremely apparent upon playing any version of NFL Blitz. If you are up, you will fumble and throw interceptions until you are losing. Only one time did I see the Blitz bullshit break, and it ended in a 100+ to 0 shutout against 4 human players.

>> No.959175

>>959147
Yeah.

It's easy to see why devs do it. They're trying to make the game interesting for players of all skill levels and keep long games from being decided early on.

But it's not cool when exceptional play is punished and mediocre play is rewarded. Nobody wants to lose because the AI pulled some bullshit ability out of their ass, and I honestly don't want to win because I played poorly enough for the AI to let their guard down.

all you are incorrectly assuming that giving the ai abilities that the player doesnt have is 'cheating'

the rules for a video game are what-ever the pgrogrammers wanted.

The computer doesnt play the same way a player does.
In mario kart the computer controlls 7 races while the player controls 1. The player has the ability to retry races, while the computer does not. The computer and player can both use boosting but the computer can't boost as well as a player can. Theres a lot more rule differences than a bit of rubberband ai

I think all rubber-banders could take a few notes from shmups.

In shmups, it's called "ranking." When you're playing exceptionally well (different games may have different standards for what constitutes "exceptional", for example, in Gradius it's based on how many powerups you have) the game will step it up.

When done right, rubberbanding a.k.a. "ranking" can really make it feel like your computerized opponent is a living creature. In real life, a human opponent is more likely to play harder if she is losing.

I think mainly it's not bullshit when shmups do it, because it's a system that can be analyzed and manipulated just like any other part of the game's "meta." It isn't like the game is just arbitrarily saying "nuh uh, I had a shield!" like some kid on the playground.

You still don't get it. The master system has a bigger viewable area. It wasn't designed to be a trick, it's an unfortunate side effect of being ported to Game Gear.

The rings as they are are there as a safety net because you can miss that platform pretty easily due to the vertical springs. It's not about tempting the player, it's about saving their life when they inevitably miss the platform.

I don't know if it was like this in the NES version, but in FF Origins on "Hard" difficulty for FFI all spells cost 1 mana and you got a certain amount of mana for every tier of spell.

You basically couldn't use higher tier spells on stuff that wasn't a boss because you had very few casts so if you wanted to heal and weren't close to a town your only real option was using a potion that that healed 20 hp.

This is why White Mages were completely not viable.

Unless you're trying to argue some kind of "if there's a ring you should be able to grab it with no consequences no matter where it is" angle. But really it sounds like you aren't grasping this "Master System" concept of a "bigger screen = you can see the fucking spikes"

Why not just make two saves? One that is at the start of every new level (save 1), and one for progress through that area (save 2). That way when you get stuck on a boss you just load up save 1 and go back and grind or stock up. After you beat the boss you save over your save 1.
