>I talk about watching gameplay
Are you applying the shader on top of Youtube let's plays, or are you applying it on top of games you're playing?
Because one of those makes sense, and the other is a zoomer larp.
>I talk about playing live music
Using audio distortion effects in music you're actively creating is not the comparison you seem to think it is.
That's an artistic choice, and is intended to be part of the finished piece. It's just as much part of the music as the vocal track or the baseline.
This would only be an apt comparison when talking about a game that includes VHS artifacts as part of the inherent visual style. Which exist, but that's not what's being discussed.

A comparison that would fit what YOU'RE doing would be attending a live concert while wearing headphones that play a constant hiss that is in no way part of the live production itself.

I'm messing about with the really basic shader options in duckstation but don't really know if I'm going to bother keeping them on or not, nothing I'm trying really feels like it makes the end product look better, and I'm not changing emulator etc. mid playthrough

Legit question (and this probably gets asked a lot), but why not just use a CRT? I can understand some of the use cases like using it for portable consoles or getting a specific look (VHS-style), but isn't getting a CRT a better option if you only want to play?
Just find a cheap/free 14" one and get a converter (if you play on PC).

no, you're misunderstanding what i'm saying. i'm saying the shader looks as if it's specifically emulating sitting too fucking close to the tv. the fucking pixel seperation is too fucking big. it looks like the same thing as sitting too fucking close to a tv and you start seeing the separation of the phosphor dots. it doesn't look anything like sitting far away from a tv would. the shader is making these dots way too large.

you don't actually choose to play games like this, right?

I actually did try going for dithering blend composite because of dev's intetions and NES look which i also do have nostalgia for it.
But it basically felt like larping. As i actually do enjoy how dithering looks and used to it. A lot of examples people use are generally On/Off without CRT shader. With CRT shader it doesn't look bad for me.
Some extreme cases do look better with composite but whether entire game benefits from that is another question.
