Decided to emulate NES and SNES games on my laptop from a Tor.

Fuck me, these games are hard. I guess I've been babied by modern games.

Would /vr/ recommend me some some games to get gud?

megaman 2 is a good entry level game.

Challenging, but not so much that it's frustrating.

>> No.932497

SMB1 and 3 really hone your retro skills.

Donkey Kong Country and early Kirby games are pretty easy.

Mega Man series once you get better.

Go play Kirby's Adventure.

It's the best entry level game I can think of. It'll make you love video games even more.

Hahahahaha! Yeah it'll do that. Like the others said SMB has a pretty good curve, but it doesn't get really hard. Megaman 2 is one of my favorites. Double Dragon is a game that is fun and starts medium hard but gets really hard. Contra has a classic cheat code to start with 30 lives that makes a very hard game pretty easy. Stay away from shmups. Duck Tales is fun and keeps a pretty medium hard difficulty throughout. Metroid is a good place to hone your 2D skills because the action isn't that hard but you have to do a lot of it. Castlevania will kick your ass.

There people that think Megaman X is hard?

Like maybe near the end after you beat the 8 robot masters but up until that point the game should be really enjoyable. The game encourage exploring and thinking outside of the box.

An E Tank is obtained by standing on a growing pillar, another by falling behind a robot with a ton of health or destroying it, I think another is only obtainable from using a boomerang and having the item go through the wall of the stage and lastly I forgot where the fourth one was but it is safe to assume you gotta go out of your way to get it.

>> No.932591

also, OP if you are still here

retro games should be approached with a different mentality.

Most games nowaday are super gentle, they guide you through with minimal effort.

You need to have a steel resolve to play these games, you WILL die a lot, everyone dies A LOT, but it is so much more rewarding when you finally win.

If something is hard just stick with it, your muscle memory will eventually catch up.

I always told people I like Donkey Kong Country until I try playing it again. There is no joke a stage with a barrel coming right at you and if you aren't aware of it or don't react quickly then you will die.

I'm not saying Donkey Kong is shit but that is the kind of game where you gotta learn stages one by one. Simply going from start to finish won't even allow you to get 50% completion as the game have more hidden rooms then unhidden rooms. I think for a gauntlet challenge I ended with like ~25% but it been a while so I don't really remember.

That game require a totally different mindset compare to games now like you said. You can only expect to die, you just gotta make sure you have enough lives to finish the game. I think I finish the challenge with two lives where I am pretty sure about 20+ were given to me.

NES Easy games

Kirby's Adventure
SMB3
SMB2
DuckTales
LoZ(sure, second quest is kinda rough, but the first quest isn't that hard)

SNES Easy games
Kirby Super Star
Super Mario World
LoZ:Alttp
Mega Man X
Super Metroid(Lets face it, if you aren't speedrunning or going for a minimal gear run, this game isn't that hard.)

I have played all DKC games countless times and have no idea what you're talking about. One of the fuel platform stages? In those you barely walk around at all, god forbid there be obstacles so you can't just put down the controller and wait for the stage to be over.

>they guide you through with minimal effort
>mfw playing Pokemon White

I mean, Pokémon is as casual as it gets but Black and White weren't rewarding at all. The games are mostly praised for being pretty, the "whole new world" aspect is really weak when there's so little to explore.

Later the game director mentioned in an interview that since the main appeal of Pokémon is the post-game content (battling with friends and "catch them all") they made sure getting there was easy and quick because some kids complained they got stuck at some point and rage-quitted.

They made the game shorter on purpose.
