Probably the best platformer of all time. Graphically timeless, great music, great level design and difficulty curve, and so much replayability with its collectibles and multiple routes.

Some of the best controls I've ever had in a game too. So easy and intuitive to control Yoshi and shoot off eggs.

I find the crying way overblown. The only way you'd be hearing it often is if you were ridiculously bad at the game, and even then it's easy to get him back on quickly.

When I heard they were making a new Yoshi game, I was hoping it would be another Yoshi's Island. Now, I love Yoshi's Story, too, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed when I learned they were using that style over Yoshi's Island. Maybe that new game will be longer than Yoshi's Story.

Jimmies marginally rustled. If babby Mario was crawling along on his own, Lemmings style, while being bombarded by enemies that he crawls into blindly, that would be an escort mission.

However, babby Mario is attached to you. The only way he gets into peril is if you get hit.

tl;dr - The worse you suck, the more you hear crying. Because you've fucking earned it. You tool.

>> No.931525

I never had Yoshi's Island back when I was a kid with my SNES. Only decided to emulate it recently.

Turns out I was missing out on perhaps the best platformer ever made. Everything seemed perfect to me. Art style and graphics define the word timeless, gameplay is pure fun controls are great, music is top notch... Crying Mario didn't really annoy me, as it was a fitting noise to make the player hurry and get the baby back before the time expired. Can understand how it may annoy a spectator though.

Now I was never that great at video games so the difficulty (about the same as SMW, which makes them the easiest 2D Mario games) was just right for me to maintain a challenge yet not turn it into frustration. I get why some retro game fans may consider it too easy though.

So a five star game, one of the all time greats.

Misunderstood and underrated, also constantly compared to Yoshi's Island but I guess that's innevitable.
The game's "story mode" is meant to be pretty short, because you're supposed to replay it a lot of times. As you play the game, if you meet the required items collected, you can unlock a new level within a page. There's 4 levels to unlock in 6 pages, that makes up a total of 24 full levels of relatively long lenght if we have into account there is no real ending goal in a level, just different areas that connect in between, with different paths kinda metroidvaniesque, and you finish the level when you eat enough fruit.

Most people played the story mode once, though it was short, too cute (this is true) and not challenging, but that's because they expected the game to be Yoshi's Island 2, and it has some very different things, in concept and design, that makes it not really comparable to YI, it's a game that tried to do its own thing.
When you unlock new levels, you can play a game and select different levels in different pages, sort of a "Choose your own adventure" thing... I think this aspect of the game wasn't really polished, and almost nobody understood it. Maybe the game lacked in that aspect, probably all 24 levels should have been available from the start (but then then would be less incentive to collect stuff on the levels).

Then there's trial mode which is the "hardcore mode" of the game. You can play any of the levels you've unlocked, and go for the highest possible score. Collecting only melons or your Yoshi's favorite fruit might be challenging in some levels. The game doesn't have a timer though, so you can take your sweet time exploring the levels, chilling to the peaceful music... it's a good game, not a masterpiece like Yoshi's Island, but it's underrated.

>> No.931871

>>931834
That's a bad comparison because dragon coins only give you extra lives, whereas the things you collect in YI are used to open up extra stages.

I love how my girlfriend and cousins (they're like 7 and 9) can play it and just want to complete the levels, while I can play it to get to the high-scores.

I recently bought it and replayed it (never owned the game, only borrowed it from my friend), and for some reason I just managed to still find the cuteness endearing rather than annoying.

I guess it helps I only played YI after this game, and I never got confused about the stages thing.

>> No.934891

>>930529

Highly underrated/-appreciated.
The reason for this is that there are only 6 pages which makes the game look very short. So you plug it in and if you take every fruit you can find ~30 minutes later you are finished. And then people thought "What a ripoff". Most people did not know or did not care enough that every level contains hidden hearts which open new levels on tthe next page, so you have only really "beaten" the game if you have won at all levels and unlocking them all gives it a high replay value...
Of course that was also in the manual, but noone ever reads them...
