Lol damn.

When framerates are that low it’s honesty a big difference. Only retards play at hi-res on expansion pak games.

Most games that utilized optional expansion pak at least pushed out a 1-3 more frames a second if you stuck with low-res mode (Star Wars Episode 1 racer is like this).
Very rarely you’d get an improvement to both (Quake 2).

weird that Nintendo or third-parties didn't introduce special chips in their cartridges like in previous generations in order to improve their games beyond what the base hardware was capable of

but I guess shit was expensive as is already

They really should have just made this for the Gamecube instead.

For what it's worth, it chugs far less on emulators, and can even be made to run at 60 FPS. One of the instances where inaccurate emulation actually helps the game in a way.

Did they do a framerate check when you drop a nuke grenade? I remember doing nuke grenade matches with friends and the framerate would just tank into sub 10 fps.

I've lined up 8 simulants in front of a single camera in 4 player combat simulator, exploded everything and it fell under 1 fps
it never crashes, so I give it that

High res mode should've been higher res textures than screen resolution

N-bomb fights in combat simulator are some of my favourite multi-player memories. We'd be in tears laughing as we'd desperately try to escape the blurry black death at something like one frame per second.
