I was crazy about virtual pets as a kid, but I must have given most of them away or something. All I have now is a Tamagotchi and a Pokewalker.
Why are they all so expensive, now? I'd really like to get a few of them for nostalgia's sake, but finding anything for less than $40 is pretty hard. Do you think Goodwill and such might have them for cheap?

Indeed, this is part of the reason I wanted one. Only works on G-S-C on a Color, the items you can get are kinda "expensive" and not that great really, however in Crystal you can trade the cheapest gift (a type of letter) to a woman for lots of money. It feels almost like cheating

I made some sprites from squinting really hard at the screen for hours, I made many of the animations but I'm sure there are a lot more. I will post the rest and maybe animate them tomorrow.

I doubt it. Specially not these's screens, they're 3-color lcds specially designed for it.
Mine also looked bad when I went to pick it up, the borders looked like they had some sort of leakage, but in the end the screen was visible if a little "faded". It even has a contrast option.

I got a new Tamagotchi last year, and it was a lot of fun, surprisingly. I remember in school a few people had long chains of ten or more of them; I couldn't imagine carting for that many at once.

Kudos to you on recreating the screens by hand. I always wanted to "hack" the device and replace the sprites with Meowths, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

The Pokewalker could operate standalone. Eventually a Pokemon will "follow you" (i.e. be generated by the Pokewalker) and you could use it to play the minigames. If you want to select a specific Pokemon or course, you'll need the game, though.

The Pocketstation never saw release in the US, but a lot of games still included Pocketstation support, even translated. Alpha 3 comes to mind.

Yeah, the only way is to rip the sprites and program something just by looking at it. Some people have made Digivice emulators, so it's not impossible. There just needs to be more interest. Maybe I'll do it once I finish CS, but that will be on a few years.

Looking again at the VMU I wonder why didn't it have a pedometer and a licensed Digimon game, I mean it even has the data connection port to link 2 at the same time! That would have been the bomb when it was new, but it baffles me even more that no one in the DC community has released one yet.

I had this one. I remember saving up a shit ton of the walking credits and giving them all to Pikachu at the same time and he played the piano or something. I think I ended up giving it away to some kid from down the street who always would come over and complain about not having the toys I had until I would give the stupid fuck something.
