Old man on marketplace selling pic related for $50 cad. Go to buy it and sure enough a senior citizen pulls up in a dodge caravan. Buy the game blindly because it's an old dude and the pictures he posted seemed legitimate.

Upon further inspection I am at a loss and require /vr/'s assistance. Box face surface feels a little too glossy, print quality is high, all the inserts feel and look way too real. Box has wear associated with age. I've seen my fair share of reproduction boxes but this one has me stumped.

Tried looking around and couldnt find much information. Did GB boxes ever have a glossy film on the front?

I'm aware the cartridge included is incorrect, but this is by far the worst label in terms of print quality I've ever seen on an "authentic" gb game. I opened it an the board is legitimate... this is some sort of first/ weird print error?

Somone else has noticed this difference in print quality before, but the thread never received a resolution, pic related. Mine is comparable to the one on the right.

Just uncertain if game boy boxes had such a gloss on them, I don't have any other ones to reference to. I have a few gba boxes and they have an eggshell finish to them almost. The gloss is throwing me off. Thank you for your input tho!

It's actually really easy to authenticate GB/GBA games if you're able to open the cartridge. Fonts, text sizes, factory stamps and label colors are all easy indicators of authenticity from a glance. Once you've seen a few repros it's super easy to detect. I'm actually surprised people havnt started making higher quality repros. As for boxes, again, super easy to tell if it's a reproduction because for whatever reason the printing quality just isn't there yet aswell and theyre either super glossy or not glossy enough. I was just thrown off because I don't own any GB game boxes and the gloss confused me. :(

The print quality is because the reproductions are digitally printed. The originals used litho which would be impractical for short runs.

Bad Angle! Turns out the box is a first print American version and the SML1 game is Canadian/ French. Asked another forum about the label being wonky and looking like a reproduction, turns out it's real tho :).

I supplied OP with anecdotal testimony about the glossiness of gameboy boxes I remember and linked a discussion I found on google. Another anon remarked about giving a shit whether a box is authentic or not and I more or less agreed with him stating that I didn't own or spend much on video games. its VERY obvious when you have a reproduction box
text will be in the wrong spot
it will literally be blurry (have dot-matrix print bubbles, etc)

check the TM and R logos
you dont have another GB(c) box to compare to?

I uploaded a picture with the embossed factory stamp on the front label. I cracked open the game and found an authentic board inside. Somone in another thread stated it's a printing error or a slight shift during printing that makes it appear slightly distorted.

Yeah the gloss on the box threw me off for sure. Print quality is definitely there tho. I'm confident everything is authentic.
