>Is DX the only one on the system people would tell you to avoid?

The only changes in the DX port is better chao system (SADX Chao system is the SA2B system slapped on top of SADX engine), mission mode, game gear games, and (non-consistent) 60 FPS with horribly downgraded graphics and broken game mechanics.

The best version of SA1 is the Sonic Adventure International or SADX with SADX Mod Installer.

This blog examines the differences between Dreamcast, Gamecube and PC versions of Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure DX, focusing on changes in the Gamecube and PC ports that can be considered downgrades from the original Dreamcast version. For the sake of consistency, we had to follow certain rules and make certain decisions, which are listed here

Yep, my pet theory is that Miyamoto or someone else high up at Nintendo really fell in love with RE1 on the Playstation when it came out. The GCN's launch title was Luigi's Mansion, basically a Mario Bros take on Resident Evil 1. After that there was REmake, RE0, and ports of all the other mainline RE games basically getting the whole franchise playable on GCN. There was a few other haunted house simulators, Eternal Darkness, The Haunted Mansion, Monster House, etc

The octagon cutout on GameCube controllers makes their analog stick work really well with tank controls since you can push forward & know that you'll only be going forward, which isn't the case on floaty DualShock style controllers.

This applies to RE4 too. In fact it's what's missing in a lot of other versions of the game, and what makes it so satisfying to play with a GameCube controller but then "feel wrong" without one.

>How do the GameCube ports of 2 and 3 compare to the PS1 versions?

Resident Evil 2 and 3 on the GameCube is almost a direct port to the PlayStation. It did not include any innovations of the port for Nintendo 64, nor galleries from the PC and Dreamcast versions.

https://gamecom.neocities.org/Resident_Evil/Comparison/Resident_Evil_2/

>Anyone play the original Win98 ports of 1 2 and 3?

RE1/2 sold 5 millions copies each, and when the GameCube came out survival horror was at its peak. Nobody would have predicted the genre would take a dive in the audiance interest just a couple years after.

I think it was less that they were fans and more that horror at the time was the prime example of the 'mature' side of gaming that they were perceived as having too little of. They wanted horror games to combat the image that Nintendo had no dark/adult games. Geist for example was picked up specifically for the purpose of being a mature game (it wasn't really imo but whatever) and they talked about it at the time.

They did start to release the mainline Resident Evil games on the Dreamcast with 2, 3, Dino Crisis, and Code Veronica. PS2 got a lot of exclusive Resident Evil games. The resident evil games WERE supposed to be Xbox exclusives, but MS fucked up their pitch. I think it MS called Capcom the next day more confidence with their pitch, but by then they already made a deal with Nintendo. Capcom even said that if they used their second pitch first, they would have gotten the deal.
