This kusoge ruined Castlevania and I'm tired of pretending it didnt

As far as tansaku goes it's fine.
Dracula X gekka no yasoukyoku is a spinoff, anyway.

The actual midwit opinion

Ok let's pretend SOTN never exists... guess what? Castlevania dies earlier. Very few cared about tough old school sidescrollers when the 5th gen began, and without SOTN Konami still is unable to make a great 3D Castlevania. Basically it would've gone the way of Contra. You should be grateful that SOTN extended the series' relevancy.

Oh you are tired of pretending it didn’t are you. I’m so sorry, you must be exhausted. How about you explain your opinion next time instead of resorting to a boomer Facebook meme slogan

I see this argument often but it's a really bad one.
Why would I be grateful that a series I enjoyed is now being represented by something completely alien to it?

Have zoomers corrupted kusoge to just mean "game I don't like"?

>> No.9272813

This game feels more like you "work though it" rather than play it.

The same way the term Mary Sue now means "character I don't like" instead of "author's self insert".

Why do you care? did anybody take your old castlevanias away when SOTN launched?

I haven't seen Mary Sue used incorrectly by anyone actually making serious criticism. Usually people claiming Mary Sue just means "character I don't like" fails to understand the substance of the complaint, and probably also finds the criticism threatening and so desperately tries to derail into a semantic argument by over-simplifying the idea (for example, stupidly asserting that it HAS to be SPECIFICALLY an author self-insert.)

On the other hand, it's rare for Mary Sue to be particularly relevant as a criticism in a videogame. Videogames are usually about the player overcoming obstacles with traditional character development sometimes included as a bonus. The literary concept of a Mary Sue rarely applies, since so many games are about self-inserting as the main character anyway.

Finally, if you let the dumbest subliterate critics on 4chan define your terms for you, that's your own fucking fault.

Most people still associate Castlevania with the NES games

>> No.9272923

>>9272869
A key component of the original terminology of Mary Sue was that the character was a self-insert of a female author in a pre-existing work of fiction, and the poor writing about that self-insert being perfect and beloved by all with zero effort, stakes or any actual form to engage the reader. The modern usage is nothing short of a travesty and another evidence of the many terms used, not just here but on the wider internet discoursed, losing their original meaning to just become "thing I don't like".

The term Nazi as it is used nowadays also counts as an example of this "meaning decay", so to speak.

I thought it was derived from a Trekkie fan fiction where the faultless main character was an author self insert named mary-sue, I dunno how it'd change unless you just didn't look into the history of terms before using them

How it's used, it's less about it being a self-insert than the character being faultless.

>> No.9272948

Ah, so people are calling flawed self-inserts mary-sues? Because I'd imagine there should be a different name for that, something indicating an attempt to garner sympathy or something to that extent

Bloodstained Curse of the Moon (1&2), Castlevania Resurrection, and rom hacks all exist because Castlevania is relevant to more people. The series continuing 2-4 more generations is thanks to SotN and the explosion of metroidvania popularity.
Kusoge is generally poorly made games, not just ones you don’t like for some vapid reason.

I think y'all are taking it too far now. We've covered the salient points and are generally operating on the consensus that humans say, do, and believe stupid things, so further speculation/pontificating on that stupidity is superfluous.
