The renders kinda has that spline/NURBS style of creating shapes which I don't think renders well in real time on N64 hardware. It was probably computationally faster to use a few triangles in accordance to the budget the engine allows for smooth gameplay.

So I booted this up the other day after not having played it in literal decades, and I gotta say the controls are a bit weird. Aiming is a bit spastic, too. Of course, I'm emulating, so I'm sure there's some issues with that regarding sensitivity. Anyway, I accidentally exited a map midway through, putting me outside, and it appears that resets things like villagers rescued. Is that right?

As soon as the fanfare sounds and the results screen appears you exited an area. The results are your new high score. All Tribals will be restored when entering it again.
Since they can easily be killed that allows you to try again. But if you exited prematurely by accident that respawning is of course negative since you have to rescue all of them again.

The game saves your best rescue attempt. Rescue 7 out of 12 Tribals and 7 will be recorded, then it'll change to 12 when you go back and get them all. And you WILL need to get them ALL.

Aiming definitely is better with a real N64 stick.
Also, be sure to change the control settings to expert on the menu screen, it will allow you to move in all 8 directions with the c buttons instead of just left and right while on aiming mode

I didn't mind collecting the tribals. The boss battles were fun, but challenging. But fuck that final boss. It's a broken janky fight and I've never been able to beat him. And if you didn't collect all the homing missiles for Juno you basically stood no chance. How I was supposed to know I can only use Juno for the final fight, and should have only collected power ups for Juno only? Everything about this game was fantastic until I got to that final boss. Fuck were they thinking??
