Who thought this was a good idea? The music is obnoxious, it's full of dead ends, tons of cheap hits, horrible attempts at humor, etc.

I always thought GI would make an interesting game premise; escape the island by means of various schemes or inventions while an AI controlled Gilligan wanders around and attempts to inadvertently fuck up your progress. Then I found out someone else beat me to the punch by 20 years or so, even if it's in primitive fashion. Actually feels good man.

I'm the guy who rented Gilligan's Island. I had Fester's Quest. Actually, it's a weird story.

OK so in 6th grade I was like one of those kids who was bullied by everyone and there was another kid in my class like that too, his name was Eric. Well, we decide to borrow games, I let him borrow my Mega-Man 3 and I borrowed his Fester's Quest.

Well, like a week or so later he doesn't show up to school. And around that time my parents split up and my mom, my sister and I moved back to our homestate, so I didn't find any of this out until later. But it turned out he killed himself, and apparently I was mentioned in his suicide note and he apparently may have had a homosexual crush on me, I don't even fucking wanna know. But the thing that bothered me the most is that I never got my Mega Man 3 back and was stuck with Fester's Quest. I eventually traded that Fester's Quest for Little League World Series with some kid in my new class who didn't commit suicide. I didn't want to be stuck with the cursed Fester's Quest cartridge from the suicide kid.

So that's my Fester's Quest story, I tell it anytime Fester's Quest is mentioned and people don't know how to react. I also sometimes tell it when Mega Man 3 is mentioned, but usually I just talk about how Whistle Concert/Protoman's theme is my favorite song from the NES era of game music.

The Chip 'n Dale and Ducktales games that Capcom whipped up were pretty solid. I remember their Tale Spin being decent as well, though I only played it briefly as a rental.

>> No.929834

>>929608
Tale Spin is not a bad game but it's nothing extraordinary. It's short and very easy shmup that adds nothing to the formula, but for was it is, there is nothing wrong about it. It's decent yeah. Worth a playthrough if you're interested in the show, or in what Capcom and the NES did in general.

The biggest issue with Fester's Quest is the same issue Roger Rabbit had: your objective is unclear. You just kind of start off without any indication of where you're supposed to go.

That, and Fester's Quest is brutally difficult.

>> No.930004

The problem with Fester's Quest is that when they imported the gun mechanics from Blaster Master, they failed to design the levels to not interfere with these mechanics. So while in Blaster Master, the middle power-ups are annoying, in Fester's Quest you quite often run into situations where they are literally impossible to use. And while in Blaster Master you have the grenade to fall back on in situations that hinder the use of certain bullet patterns, you don't have this in Fester's Quest.

This is the sort of thing that people with limited vocabularies call "artificial difficulty", but which is probably better called "unintentional difficulty". The difficulty stems not from an intentional design decision, but comes from a flaw in the game.

>> No.930105

>>930086

Oh shit, I didn't realize it til you mentioned it, but now I see it so clear, that they did use the Blaster Master gun mechanics for Fester's Quest.

>> No.930119

>>930086
>This is the sort of thing that people with limited vocabularies call "artificial difficulty", but which is probably better called "unintentional difficulty".

"Hard but for the wrong reasons". Yes.

>fucked up gun "upgrades" in festers quest
>poorly implemented wall jumping
>jumping off ladders in spelunker
>poor collision detection
>edges of platforms are not where they are drawn onscreen (the bane of every running jump)
>bad camera angles in early 3D games causing death
>poor enemy placement (in doorways, automatically hit when entering).
>control lag
>etc

I would consider "artificial difficulty" be intentional game designs meant to fuck the player over in a "tomb of horrors run by a masochistic DM" kind of way. Like wizardry 4.
