Back in the day, N64 games were at least twice as expensive as non discounted PS1 games, and game stores and rentals were slow to stock up the N64 library. Meanwhile the PS1 had an endless supply of games, everyone kept discovering hidden gems, and they were easy to pirate so even third worlders had access to hundreds of great games. N64 owners were stuck with mario zelda and james bond. Must've been miserable being a nintendo fanboy in the 90s, not that things got any better for them in the 2000s though.

The way people react to the N64 these days is very strange. I guess there's a perception that it's "the most overrated console", and people feel compelled to tear it down. People aren't anywhere near as rabid about the Dreamcast which I think is a similar kind of system in as much as it has a smallish but well liked library of games. I even hear people insisting systems like the Atari Lynx or the Virtual Boy are under appreciated, and people don't get anywhere near as pissy about that.

I don't know. I'm done talking about the N64 on the internet. People are too fucking weird about this console, and I'm still going to like it, at the end of the day.

It would've been interesting to grow up being into PC instead of console, or knowing someone who was. In high school there was one guy who showed me Half-Life, and was telling me about the shit he got up to in Ultima Online.
The only stuff my regular friends and I got into was Blizzard games, especially Diablo 2. Otherwise I was only using it to emulate SNES, or seeing the odd game here and there that one friend played like Max Payne.
At one point I had Baldur's Gate 2 at home cause the cover looked cool, and had no fucking idea what was going on. Playing Fallout and the IE games for the first time around age 30, when I would have had teenaged nostalgia for them but didn't, was neat.
I missed out on some amazing stuff, but I would've missed out on all the consoles I played if the situation was reversed. There are as many great games on PS1 that I didn't play as that I did.

I played these games when I was 11. N64 was the best console my pentium 4 PC could emulate. I was stuck with ROMs of N64 greatest hits all winter. They were fun for a while but getting stuck for days with mario and zelda really makes you notice the cracks in their design.

Not really... The frame drops are caused by bad optimization in the BSP.
And that's even shown on the tech demo of the engine Neversoft used for the MDK PSX port.
Not to mention the frame rate is REALLY unstable to the point that playing with a overclocked console or a emulator just renders the game unplayable

well pablo, that's a very interesting opinion. considering there's absolutely nothing on PS1 that looks anywhere close to as good as the likes of Majora's Mask or Perfect Dark, and the N64 hardware is literally twice as powerful, you don't have much to support this theory.
