How many classic games allow you to play as a female character, either as standard or via an option at the start.

With RPGs, try to keep it to instances where the character you create is a "character" in their own right, like how Darklands addresses your PC as "you," with the gender affecting people's treatment of you.

I hope you realize this post is entirely nonsensical and the term 'non-sequitur' fits perfectly here, and you've even written out your argument exactly like an argument found in a book trying to teach you different fallacies. But anyways, let's go over this specifically because I'm bored enough to do so
>Jrpgs do not represent the whole of modern gaming in any way, shape, or form
>Jrpgs are known for their poor writing, so it makes sense they wouldn't write characters very well
>If the poll you listed (I couldn't find it myself) actually does occur in the manner you say it does, then it's asked what could be called an amateur enthusiast community with the extremely subject term 'best'. And from the looks of it, the definition of 'best' probably ended up being 'who was currently the most popular and hot'. Which I doubt is close to your own opinion of what a 'good' female protagonist has, meaning the poll has no actual relationship to your argument as well
>This is my own opinion on the matter and it's somewhat baseless and not really related but given the stupidity of that poll's setup, I can't imagine that the either the community asked or the ones asking are very intelligent. Which actually makes sense, because video games like to attract morons who think they know more than theydo

>and of course we still have to discuss the comparison between finding a 'good' female protagonist, a 'good' male protagonist and a 'good' protagonist at all. Because I don't think it'd be difficult to argue that a lack of 'good' female protagonists is due simply to the horrible quality of writing found across the board and has absolutely nothing to do with females specifically.

Because there's such a significant lack of female protags, as shown in this thread, that it becomes an intelligent critique on video games to ask for a list of games with a female protag, isn't it?
Or maybe it was asked because having a female protag, as opposed to a male protag, significantly changes or enhances a game's structure and story (and let's remember that older titles, outside of rpgs, tend to ignore story and character development for the most part outside of shallow movements allowing the game to progress logically enough to keep the player somewhat invested)
Or maybe it was because the simple fact that if the player character, despite being a hollow shell in all other aspects, is a male then a female player can't properly get immersed into the game
Or could it have been because the op just wanted something to jack off to and further the use of his imagination at the same time.
And I hope you understand that all of these are entirely moronic opinions to have based in a misunderstanding of video games, their history, developer intentions, cultural history and value, and the very idea of what being a female protag brings to the table.
And to be even clearer, it is these same confused reasons that would lead someone to not just ask of this list, but for people to browse it in hopes of a female-representative game (because this is obviously the most important factor of a game, especially in relation to quality)

Romancing SaGa 3 is the most polished one. The FFL games on the gameboy are part of the SaGa series, with FFL2 being the closest to how SaGa is for Romancing and Frontier. I dunno if Romancing SaGa 1 and 2 got translated, but I know that RS1 got a PS2 remake which is a good RPG.

If you want something with familiar progression but still has the SaGa flair then Final Fantasy Legend II for the Gameboy. Four different races, both humans and mutants develop the same way (stat ups through combat based upon what they do in battle) but humans develop faster than mutants while mutants can learn spells at random on their own. Robots get stronger when they equip items and monsters transform into other monsters (more powerful or even weaker) when they consume monster meat. There are eight equipment slots for your characters (monsters cannot equip or use items) so you can have three weapons on your characters, and even with robots you can stack body armors on them. Almost every single weapon in the entire game has durability.

If you want to get into a classic one with non-linear progression then go with Romancing SaGa 3, but it lacks different races developing in different ways. It has a translation patch and is for the SNES.

SaGa Frontier is a mix between the SNES Romancing SaGa games and the Gameboy games, and they were localized unlike the Romancing SaGa series.

It is a funny question on where to start because once you get into the non-linear games they don't help you as much with progression. I just find it amusing because I am thinking just trying to figure out what game to play is similar to what you will be doing in the games with figuring out where to go.
