Hey /vr/

I recently downloaded DOSbox on a whim and I'm itching to try it out.

Are there any recommendations you guys could offer?

I think you can actually install Windows 95 on DOSBox.

You should try that if you want to play those early win games.

If it's version 0.74, stop, and download DOSBox SVN Daum. It's more user friendly, and far more up to date.

You can also install Windows 3.1.

OP, get that pack. It should start you off nicely.

If you have friends who're willing to spend a few hours, Cyber Empires (aka Steel Empire) is one of the best party games I've ever played. It's like Risk until you get to a conflict, then you control the robots that make up the army attacking/defending. It's fun as shit.

Obviously, XCOM if you haven't played it. It's one of the best games of all time.

Scorched Earth. If, somehow, you haven't played it, it's like an early Worms. Fucking fun as shit, though.

4D boxing: it's old, it's ugly, but it's flipping fun.

Aces Over the Pacific. Awesome old flight/combat sim.

Hard Drivin': ridiculous racing game where you can take a stunt track and do hilarious shit in a car.

Special mention: Doom and other early FPS games, Sim City,

Does nobody play Dos games on this board? Is it all SNES/PS1 here?

I tried downloading SVN Daum but my norton marked it as malicious or something and it got removed.

Thanks, I've never really handled a virtual console before, is there anything I should know before I use it?

Thanks for the recommendations, out of curiosity, are there any good platformers or action-adventure games on the DOSbox?

I play MechWarrior 2 Mercs every once in a while.

I still play openTTD, but I don't know if that really counts as retro.

Do you want generic recommendations for one of the biggest gaming platforms?
You could just pick them from existing threads here.

Your Norton is shit.

The Commander Keen series is iconic Dos platforming. Prince of Persia 1/2 were also great on DOS. It's also got games that were ported around, e.g., Joe & Mac, Ghosts n Goblins, etc.

As for action adventure, it's got a few, but not many are worth the time. Ys has a couple entries here, but they're pretty ugly. Metal Gear made it on here, I think, as did River City Ransom. I guess the first GTA qualifies. Star Control is super story-driven, space combat action+adventure, I guess. Syndicate is more strategy, but should get a mention somewhere, as should Descent. Descent is more of a fps hybrid, but it's a completely unique experience due to the fact that you can move/rotate in all directions.

You like platformers ?
Then Alien Carnage is for you.
Seriously, shut your pie hole and go play it now.
