I'm currently playing through pic related for the first time. holy shit this game is great, can't believe I've missed out on it this long.
What are its sequels like?

Paper Mario is fantastic
TTYD is even better
SPM is a platformer RPG, it's not bad but isn't the same
Sticker Star is pretty awful

Superstar Saga is great
Partners in Time is less great but still good, but holy fuck mute it
Inside Story is a little above PiT, and has some really cool stuff
I haven't played Dream Team but I've been told great things

Inside Story's dialog is great. I haven't played much of any other Mario RPG though, so maybe that's par for the course? So many insinuations/hidden jokes that fly over kids' heads and straight into my brain.
