9227535 No.9227535 [Reply] [Original]

So Funky Kong's entire purpose in DKC1 and 2 is to give you a way to return to the world map and go back to previous stages. Apparently the concept of "pressing the B button to go to the previous menu" did not occur to Rare, despite this being something that already existed in video games at the time. So instead, they created an NPC to be used solely for this purpose.
It's really weird, but on the other hand, it gave us one of the coolest characters in the Donkey Kong series with the greatest theme song ever, so I can't complain too much.

They didn't want you to be able to leave a new part of the map until you reached a half way point, which he serves as, otherwise people would be exploiting the save spot from the last world instead of playing up to the save point of the current world.

Yes, I have thought about it. Getting magically teleported to another part of the game just with the press of a button and nothing more like OP is suggesting takes the player away from the game and its immersion as it is an abrupt reminder that the game is indeed a game.
Having an actual in-lore mechanic and explanation, even if it is the goddamn flutes and pipes in SMB3, is a much better alternative, and DKC went above and beyond to make it fun, funny, and dare I say, soulful.

As a consequence, hating Funky Kong is in fact, hating soul. Besides, you gotta admit the dude is lookin' good.

It wouldn't be "magically teleporting." The map literally shows the characters walking from stage to stage. The explanation is as simple as "they walked back." Funky could have been more of a fast travel system instead of being the only way to travel for some reason.
The way you word it is like you're saying "You can't ever walk anywhere because planes exist." This makes no sense.

Dude, retrogames were designed as "stretches" of challenge, just like a lap in a race. In DKC, these stretches are compromised of save point A to save point B. If you fail, it doesn't matter if it's on the beggining, middle or end, you'll redo the stretch. Even the concept of failing is very lenient; you have multiple lives and can get many more before a game over. DKC is full of bonus rooms and lives that can be collected over and over in previous stages, in which you can conveniently enter and then leave using start + select. If this isn't easy enough for you, then you'd be better spending your time with modern games.

>> No.9241521

>>9241504
And they were designed that way because they had to make sure Little Timmy didn't blow through them in 45 minutes and make his parents mad that they spent 70 American dollars on half a movie's worth of entertainment for him. There's nothing genuine in that design philosophy, and you are mistaking a pragmatic demarcation as an offering to your god, Difficulty. It's certainly a convenient overlap in that regard, but it's not really an organic element of the game design. Just wait until you hear about how the very concept of Lives is similarly a relic from the arcade days that serves no practical purpose when coinage is removed from the equation.

This particular game's challenge owes a lot to more artificial difficulty and underhanded little tricks reminiscent of a carnival game to keep you from finishing too early. Some platforms don't visually match their actual hitboxes, for instance. There are mitigating factors, like the lives you can stockpile from earlier stages, but the very act of farming those lives is yet another way to artificially make the game longer. I don't begrudge them for doing this, but things like Funky's Flights are very much just convoluted stopgaps to slow the player down.
