Is it controversial to claim that Mario 1 is better than Mario 3? Overall Mario 1 is a more coherent and complete package which has essentially near perfect design. Mario 3 suffers from bloat with the mini games, a pointless large UI just for the superior graphics, random gimmick power ups, auto scrollers. Those are just the things that I think can be definitely argued to be for the worse but subjectively it has lesser movement, a world map which ruins pacing, and a slower overall pace to the game. I for one to find Mario 1 to be the more fun and superior game because it essentially perfected what the platforming genre would become in its very first outing and the genre has stumbled on its feet ever since. Even all the good games since Mario 3 suffer from it's issues, every game needs a world map now, every game needs slower more casual movement, every game requires bloat that distracts from platforming. Note that I am not claiming Mario 3 is a bad game, but it made bad decisions and is overall a worse game than it could have been had it more closely followed the golden standard Mario 1 presented.

I don't think so, most people just think they're both great games although people do tend to say Mario Bros. 3 or World are the best game. I like the first one most too. Mario 3 is good but the length plus the lack of a save feature hurts it enough that Mario Bros 1 is the best game.

Super Mario Bros 3 is the better game comparing the two in a vaccum. Now if you compare them to how good they were at the time they came out, it's much closer. SMB1 was definitely more revolutionary and impressive when it came out, so it's better in that regard. In fact I'd definitely rate SMB1 over SMB3 in a best game of all-time list because of that. SMB1 might be the best game of all time, like Citizen Kane is to movies in that point of view.

There was a bootleg of Super Mario World for NES, but it had to make a shit ton of compromises. Still, it goes to show SMW didn’t push the SNES that much. On the other hand, SMB3 was the NES at peak performance. If SMB3 had been released around the early years of the Super Nintendo, I feel like it would have ended up like Super Mario World did: Still great, but not taking full advantage of the hardware.

I agree somewhat as my favourite Mario Game out of the lot is Lost Levels, which I see as superior to Mario 1 only in the sense that if you beat it it's hard to play the first game and enjoy it as it's too easy. But that Mario 1 style is better in my opinion.

What do you think of the New Mario Bros series then? For me personally I wish there was no overworld and it was just levels in these games. In the 3D games, in all of them it woud be a better journey if it was level by level.
Rayman 3's lack of a hubworld is such an improvement and it somewhow makes the world feel bigger than Mario galaxy.

New Mario Bros wii U has the most annoying overworld of all it takes so long to get to the platforming.

Its the most creative, has fun mechanics, more characters, fun combat, creative levels and nice music.

All other mario games are just mario 1 with better graphics, a new power-up (either fire flower with different effect or the tanuki suit with a similar but slightly different effect).

SMB1 is less of an investment to just pick up and play then put down when you feel like it, so it's better casually. It also has way more rom hacks. It even has a sequel that plays exactly like it.There is plenty of reasons to prefer it.

Super Mario Bros. didn't really set a gold standard, it was really primitive and had good mechanics, which is not bad if you like that. But most people enjoy Mario games in part because the developers keep coming up with new ideas to expand the Mario universe. It was always going to be for the NES. They spent 2 and a half years making the damn thing. It also had to compete with all the new consoles that could outperform the NES. Everyone in Japan already had a famicom in the house and Nintendo still wanted to continue to make software for it, so they were hesitant about entering the next generation. When it came time to manufacture the SNES, there ended up being a huge chip shortage.
