>Sega PC was a division within Sega of Japan dedicated to porting games to the PC platform, as well as producing externally developed titles for the platform. It was headed by Shun Arai. In 2000, its development staff became Smilebit.[1][2][3]

Can someone explain why SEGA ported a lot of their Genesis/Saturn exclusives to PC? Wouldn't it be better for their consoles if those titles stayed exclusive to them?

Also, I never see anyone here ever considering playing Sega PC ports. They even released Panzer Dragoon, and Sonic & Garfield collection.

The answer to any "why would" question involving Sega and something stupid is that Sega of Japan is one of worst, most mismanaged, and poorly run businesses to ever exist.
The more in depth answer to this particular one is that they were desperate for any new revenue source because the combination of the Saturn being a Titanic level disaster, and them wasting millions of dollars opening up arcade venues around the world that all failed miserably was quickly leading them to bankruptcy.

Pc's and consoles where not in direct competition. Same reason pc-engine has sega games

No one in Japan gave a shit about sega exclusives besides Virtua Fighter in the 90s. Might as well put all that sonic shovelware on PC.

Uhh bro PC-Engine was in direct competition with the Mega Drive. So much so that they kicked their arse in sales

Aren't those Saturn ports only compatible with PCs with quadratic mapping compatible graphic cards?

No they have software modes. They're pretty fine ports but I have no idea if they work fine on windows past say. 98se. I know typing of the dead runs well on winxp at least, used to play that in highschool.

Looks like someone managed to run Panzer Dragoon on Linux using Wine.
I downloaded CD rip from archive.org and tried to do the same but I get black screen after intro movie in first mission. Pic related is credits for PC port

Sega PC titles were my introduction to saturn stuff as well as let me play various genesis stuff in the 90s. Sega also published a bunch of stuff outside of the Sega PC branding. Japan had some exclusives like that one After Burner saturn sequel (forgot the name) and another budget line doing Gunstar Heroes, Rent a hero and Alien Soldier. Sakura Wars also had a pc release which according to a poster here, had an official Russian release.

Sonic Xtreme really should have been turned into a Sega PC product. It would have been a nice fit along with 3&K, CD, 3D Blast and R pc versions. I seen the claim they would not go that route because they only did titles from sega hardware which is BS because the Sega PC label also published that Sonic edutainment game and Yoot Tower.

Fucking how, you idiot? Porting a few select titles helps promote their platform, gain good will with the consumer and cause them to want your console for similar games not available elsewhere. Exclusivity was always a fucking stupid concept.

There was a slight delay before the PC release, it was not day and date. The bulk of their money was from their game center businesses at the time. They were not fully reliant on console sales.

Does Panzer Dragoon use mouse for aiming? I remember Virtua Cop 2 accepts mouse and keyboard for dual player mode, but that's an arcade port.

Unfortunately only keyboard or controller are supported. Also I can run the game now, just had to force software rendering with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1

Consoles were never their primary focus. They were just another thing they kept throwing at the wall to see what would stick and save them from the demise of the arcade.

because of them I got to play Comic Zone and Sonic 3 back in the day because I was a PC kid who grew up with DOS and PCs only and my first console was the 360.

HECK back in the day I did shit bricks because I could run Mega Drive games on my PC and I was like
>DAMN why doesn't Nintendo do this

In fact I had the DEMO of Sonic 3 which came with many gaming magazines. You know back then we did NOT have emulation and I was dreaming of playing SNES/Genesis or all other old systems (or actually current at that time) on my PC but I was like
>Who am I kidding? This will never be possible
but then I also had Pitfall for PC which they ported and I was like
>This is possible and man I just wish I could play all those other games but I guess if I could I would go insane because it is SO MANY GAMES

like we talked about one guy in town who was supposed to have every system and game back then which clearly was not as much as today because we are talking SNES generation but we were like
>he went crazy because too many games
now I download full ROM packs and no I havent gone insane yet

The PC version of Sakura Taisen 1 came with a pen inside a wooden box, what is that 3D graphic pot that comes with 3? The most useful extra was a white-orange USB Sega Saturn controller that came with Puyo Puyo Fever.
