I think this board is composed of people who mostly rate games based on how their own personal nostalgia goggles view them. Case in point? Hidden gem games which are often the best on a console are often completely unknown, overlooked, or downright hated on by this board and the only conceivable reason seems to be the fact they weren't played by many people when they were initially released. Case in point pic related. I never owned a Genesis but when checking out the games for it this was the coolest looking by far, yet no one here ever talks about it or seemingly even likes it.
Also Ranger X? A lot of imports get ignored on this board too.
So what do you think? Is this board more about nostalgia goggles instead of actual appreciation for the timelessness of retro games?

although, another thing is that some people primarily play on certain systems, and so when trying out games for other systems they usually go for the popular ones

I love lots of games that I didn't know existed when I was a kid. Gimmick's one of the best games I've ever played, and the first time was only a couple of years ago. I'm always looking for great old games that are new to me

I think it is more a disdain for anything Sega. Whenever a Sega game is mentioned here, there is just so much hate around it. The arcade action kind of games are much less robust than full at-home experiences that most here expect, so it may contribute to a perceived lack of value given the games used to be really expensive even without calculating in the inflation rate.

Consoles don't have many true hidden gems left, but PC is a different story. There are so many deep and interesting PC games that have been forgotten or get ignored because they immediately filter zoomers. Console games like Alisia Dragoon on the other hand are relatively simple, and simple games are a dime a dozen, so I understand why people aren't interested in them without nostalgia.

I have been playing many games I never knew existed when I was younger and beating them. I just don't have much to say about them. Some of those games I only put a few minutes into them and was about to write them off as something too primitive for me and then playing them a few more times I ended up enjoying them and pushed for minimal competency to get to the end. Something like Altered Beast is simple, but I found that I enjoyed the pacing with the short stages and it's fun to use your beast powers against the areas boss.

I just scaled back how I rate games. It would probably be a three point system with games that aren't good, solid ones, and great ones.

Retards take some fun but flawed game and hype it up as some unsung masterpiece, almost to the point that they make it some mandated "must play" for some console or genre. In honor of this thread I played through Alisa Dragoon again for the first time in decades. Still not a huge fan of it's weird shooter / platformer mix that's similar to Ranger-X but nowhere near as well done.

But I did pick up which I never noticed back then the reference to the Silver Star and many aesthetic elements like the style of murals, make me want to think it's on the same world as Lunar in either the distant past or future.
