I just find many people reducing the MegaDrive's sound capabilities to that in a console war that makes no sense now.
Personally, I like many sountracks from games on both the MD and SNES, but I find myself preferring that raw and arcade-like sound from the former, especially when it gave that unique electric feeling to SFX and music.
I'll even say that I believe a lot of creativity and resourcefulness has been lost since composers could put anything in their music for games with the use of CDs in consoles, instead of trying to think ways to go around limited sound channels, short times, memory capacity and more. I don't think that music in games has dropped in quality of composition, but it became predictable and less impressive at times.

I think it's a delicate thing with the sound chip. I like the Krang Stage 2, April O'Neil, Sisyphus and Triceraton themes in TMNT Tournament Fighters, but with Krang Stage 1, I can't help but hear the ambiance that can best be described as, "tearing ass into a microphone at a nightclub."
