I had Red, Blue and Yellow and I don't really remember beating any of them all the way through. I might have gotten to the Elite 4 on Blue iirc but I never fully completed one.
I don't know what happened to them but I'm pissed at myself for not holding onto them since they're pretty damn expensive to buy used these days. I couldn't even tell you where my cards are... Anybody else just collect them and never actually play the game itself?

i played the hell out of these as a kid. i remember going to walmart when i was like 5 or 6 and being enticed by the cover. I had red version and i picked charmander of course. I played that game so much. I feel like i got the right experience with it though. i got it a little bit before it exploded (in my area at leasr) so when all the kids at school wanted to battle i was ready lol. I remeber being on a field trip and the bus was crossed with link cables. Ah nostalgia

I started on Gen 1, but I still think Gen 3 was better than 1 or 2. Had most of my favorite pokemon and so much stuff improved with the game in general. Ehhh, Gen 3 is my least favorite (Ive played 1-4) but tbh it wasnt bad in general. They were good games but I feel Gen 2 kind of raised the bar too high. Plus Gen 3 includes the Gen 1 remakes which were great IMO.

As for RBY, excellent games but dated. A lot of crappy battle mechanics, the bag/item system sucked, only Yellow had color (outside of playing on Super Gameboy) and more stuff I cant remember.

The worst part about my Golbat fear and actually may have been what really caused it was it was one of the Pokémon that would appear at over Lv. 100 on Seafoam Island's edge, with Golduck, and I caught one and raised it to Lv. 250 with Rare Candies, but I put it into storage in Pokémon Stadium and when I took it out it was Lv. 100 again but with 710/2XX health, and its health bar extended past the right side in the select screen and I never looked at its other stats because I was afraid the health would wrap around and around and never end.

In retrospect it probably would end, being only about three times the normal health, but I was young and bad at math. If I knew where my copy of Blue was, I'd probably take a look at it now just to see.

It's the opinion of some fans that Pokémon design has on average declined, for example, and I personally think RSE was one of the weakest games for its lack of backwards compatibility -- although I understand the reasoning for it, with the overhaul of Effort Values and stat changes, which made games that came after it better -- and the inability to get a lot of Pokémon.

FireRed and LeafGreen I haven't played. It's actually the only main series game I haven't. So, I can't talk about that. But, just because there's a remake that does some things better, doesn't mean it invalidates the quality of the original. The originals are not worse just because there's a remake.

A lot of older Pokemon are near unusable without them, so really, it either makes them useful or creates new strategies. Seriously? I played every generation as it came out, and I cannot say I would recommend playing the originals save for nostalgia. Frankly, I think the real quality Pokemon games started with 3rd gen, and that HG/SS (save for being GSC remakes) are some of the best Pokemon games ever. Pokemon had a neat concept and an interesting way of introducing multiplayer in what could've been a fairly traditional RPG. It encouraged players to seek each other out and trade and battle, and really took advantage of a portable platform to do it on.

Of course, if you can't experience it when such a thing was very new, you won't see what the big deal is, because Pokemon helped shape the future of gaming into what it is today. A lot of concepts from it were put into practice into future games.

My argument? Each generation added a high variety of Pokemon, some of which I love, some of which I don't like at all. There are generation I Pokemon that are my favorites while there are some that I think are lazy designs. I like most the Gen VI designs so far but there are some I feel are not as strong. Every generation has its strengths and weaknesses, not one game was perfect while not one game was shit. They are all Pokemon and whether or not you choose to accept them they do have improvements. I agree that there are new games with flaws, like Diamond and Pearls being too slow, but Gen I had just as many flaws.

It's the same concept as the LoZ theory where the game that you were introduced the the series is your favorite game. It all has basically the same premise, and the way you differentiate them, in the back of your mind, is the memories you had with them. There's more to the newer games then graphics. The first Gen had a lot of problems mostly due to being the first game that where fixed/changed in remakes and sequels. People also shit on every other Gen daily, it isn't just regulated to the first few Gens. In fact, threads made on /vp/ that do shit on Gens most often shit on the most recent ones, likely to get an easy rise out of the posters that frequent there.
