gears 1 was the only game I really meshed with. I've been playing multiplayer gears 1 on 360 (now series X) since 2006 and I never tire of it, but even gears 2 didn't feel right to me. the speed, the active downs, the maps, everything was so fucking fasted paced and brutal and they fucked it up with successive entries. god tier story mode with really good dialogue and characters too. still play through the story mode every year and enjoy it every time. even went as far as playing the PC release just for the extra episode, and that was good fun too.

While brown and bloom definitely took over the PS2 eventually, early on in the 6th gen developers were amazed that the new hardware let you have decent looking foliage and water. These were the Bush years so obviously we were embracing edginess, and once the 7th gen came around with realistic metals and advanced post-processing, well, it was a Goldilocks zone for the art style

Because this was the period when shit was baked in. It was too expensive to do lighting calculations on the fly for anything but simple shapes, and so artists were allowed to work.

Modern games look like dogshit because modern lighting engines mean there's no room for expression. All that can be created is a poor simulation of reality. Old games look good because they're INTERPRETATIONS, not simulation. The look of a modern object can be completely different depending on the lighting in the scene, which can be adjusted on the fly.

That's not how it works, weapon priority is something you constantly finetune and change depending on how you fight, what you fight and what's available. Part and there was a trend of brown and bloom that was not present in 6th gen. It’s not just nostalgia either because 8th gem games largely did not have this problem. Compare RDR1 to RDR2. RDR2 is a perfect example of how to make a game that is dirty and ugly in some parts but vibrant and beautiful in others. RDR2 will age well because it’s a good looking game, similar to MGS2, Dark Cloud or Chaos Theory. RDR1 looks dusty, brown and monotone.

Far Cry 5 is another great example. It takes place in Montana. They could have made it brown and dusty, but instead it’s vibrant, bright and over saturated (as any far cry game should be), compare Shitman Ass Pollution to Hitman 1-3. Same thing.
