9200406 No.9200406 [Reply] [Original]

for those who have this a long with real hardware, is the emulation good enough to replace the original hardware with the added bonus of having higher res output, savestates, and scanlines?

>> No.9200409

no lol

>> No.9200450

So you don’t have one. I have both and it’s made everything I have real hardware equivalent for redundant. I slightly regretted buying a mister on an impulse but once I got it set up I couldn’t believe how worthwhile it was. The only question to you OP is if the high price is trivial to you or not. It is expensive if you have ways to play everything already. But I’m never going to use my game boy player again, or ps1, or og Xbox modded with mame etc.

I went on a buying spree of vintage systems a few years ago, and while I like owning the original hardware I realized I just play using everdrives anyway so what's the point? I could slim my collection down, at least the nintendo and sega consoles without losing any quality.
But I also have a retropie set up so it's kinda redundant.

>>9200456
Checkpoint system is bad game design full stop. I don't savescum but sometimes in games I want to save and pick up where I left off instead of starting from the very beginning.

It’s way better than a retro pie, not even in the same league. The only category the mister falls short in is that Bluetooth compatibility is all over the place, I resorted to using wired controllers.

>>9200406
If you care to play on composite, no, no converters will give you the same output as the actual thing.
When using RGB then for me it's impossible to tell which is real and which is mister.
If you're gonna play scaled on LCD TV then there's definitely no point in having original over mister.
Savestates on it kinda suck, though, go with regular emulators if you need that.

>> No.9200520

>>9200456
Get "good" at inputting 28 character long password on games that don't save, yeah.
Also savestates might be instrumental at getting real good, be it speedruns or high scoring, you could use that to grind out each segment to perfection.

You need at least a radiator and otg usb hub to plug shit into and you're good.
Any usb hub will do, you don't need $50 mister one.

You will want everything you list IMO, you do end up using the extra USB ports, especially if you ever might use multiple controllers or a flash drive for extra game storage. There’s not much point building a mister and skimping on costs, it’s a luxury way to play retro vidya, worth paying for the extras and enjoying the luxury. I’d also recommend a wi fi adapter, makes updating everything so trivial.

a fan is more important than a heatsink. that wouldnt be the case if it was possible to mount it properly with thermal paste, but your only option is thermal tape/pads and they are all dogshit. everyone who has tested thermals on sbc the results are the same. a heatsink + fan only nets you a 2 degree drop over fan alone, and thats with fresh thermal tape. I'm willing to bet as the months go on and the tape ages you end up with worse thermals than with just the fan alone

I love savestates.
I use them constantly.
Why would I want to play through this ancient stuff without it? I did that back in the day. No way am I firing up Rastan or Rainbow Islands or R-Type without save states now.
Play to enjoy it. When you have this many rims play it to enjoy it.
Once upon a time I had to put money into arcades in smoke filled rooms.

Yeah save states are pretty basic for many consoles or not supported on some, they’re fine for NES and GB games which don’t save or use passwords, if you want to save scum a very difficult game or rpg or something then even a modded wii has a more comprehensive save state system in its emulators. I don't know, I don't use it for any of these retarded features.

Anyone who does is a fucking embarrassment. You're playing on an LCD? Get fucking retroarch, retard. It works well enough and you won't fucking tell the difference. The shaders are probably nicer than whatever the MiSTer has, I've never used them. And you'll save a few hundred bucks you didn't need to spend.

I use my MiSTer as an actual REPLACEMENT for my real hardware. Which means it drops in between my CRT and my controllers, and works well enough that I notice no difference between it and the actual system, except it's more convenient.

Because I’ve got DC and N64, if I got MiSTer I would have zero need for the pi for gaming. Would be able to keep it going as a NAS/Kodi box though which would be ideal.

>Oh yeah if you have the space, time and money OG Hardware is the best.
cope. Even if space, time and money are irrelevant to you, the MiSTer is still better than original hardware. Original hardware has limitations which the MiSTer isn't bound by. Even the sharpest SNES 1Chip Console with the best RGB bypass mod is still blurry as shit compared to the MiSTer. PS1 games can load like x8 faster on MiSTer. Some cores can give framrate boosts which isn't possible on original hardware. The Genesis core has Adaptive Composite, which blurs things that relied on dithering to create transparencies like the waterfalls in Sonic, while keeping everything else sharp. Essentially, you can have your cake and eat it too.

The response time is perfect, there's no audio delay like software emulation, no settings to mess with, just instantly works with my original controllers (R4 instantly detected and switched over to my NeGcon just like real hardware), it's great. they sell them under a bunch of different names but they are all the same. the 230 x 185 x 100mm sized ones are perfect. just some brand/name sellers package them better than others so if yours comes damaged return it and try another "brand".

you drill four holes in the bottom and use the screws and spacers that came with the de10 nano to secure it there.

you drill appropriate sized holes in the front and back panels using a step bit for the usb(s), hdmi, and ethernet ports which you fill with these:
https://mou.sr/3coY5Em
https://mou.sr/3wADILz
https://mou.sr/3QYdlHk

I'm doing two usb in the front, and one usb in the back above the ethernet port for when I use a wireless usb dongle instead of wired lan.

Then you buy the necessary cables to connect from the board to the panel mounts.

for multiple usb panel mounts use this:
https://a.co/d/ftWd8il

its smaller than the makerspot one that usually gets recommended. plug that into the de10 nano and secure it the case by epoxying velcro to it and the case. then connect it to all your usb ports with these: https://a.co/d/cLMVAcT

you need a hole in the rear panel for the power supply cord which you can secure there with a cable gland.

and last the hardest part is cutting a hole in top for a 80 or 120mm Noctua 5v case fan which will be powered by the de10 nano gpio pins.

you can use a hole saw of the appropriate size or cut a square hole using a nibbler, or cut out a hole by drilling a bunch of holes in a line then filing your awful mess

So back in the 90s, people would typically only have a few games for whatever console they had. Playing the same levels repeatedly was just how it was, what other choice did you have? I remember renting snes games from video stores and that would be my weekend.

Things are different now. I have hundreds of games I can access immediately, most kids have even more. As soon as they stop having fun with one, they'll just boot up another, then another, then another etc. Save states could be the only reason they finish some of these games. And honestly I'm impressed with my childhood self for sitting through games like Castlevania 3 and Super Star Wars without save states. How did I have so much patience?

However, being an emufag since 1998, I'd be lying if I said there aren't horrid setups people choose to play with. I've seen quite my share of half-second input/audio lag. Those people didn't really care, but I did. Granted, my setup definetely should have certain amount of lag, but it's low enough for me to don't notice it. Typically I play retro on original hardware on a CRT but I figured this would be a good solution for the hardware that I don't care about so much, anything pre-PlayStation basically. The arcade cores were also very appealing to me.
I regularly switch it between my LCD TV and my CRT but the CRT is where it really shines with the real low input lag, even while using a USB arcade stick.
The interface is quick and it doesn't take long to get into games but I'm not sure the value is there (my setup could have bought me a PS5) compared to just playing emulated games on my PC or via a Pi.
Would be nice to get that CPS3 core soon, want to retire that hardware if possible.
