Just installed DOSBox for the first time. How hard is it to use? What games should I try?

Like most software, it's only as hard to use as its instructions are to read.

>What games should I try?
Doom, Commander Keen 4, Abuse, Nethack, and Princess Maker 2 are a good start.

>> No.919531

Check this out. It has a lot of games to get you started.

Also, I hope you're using a recent SVN build, or ykhwong's build, not the old as fuck 0.74.

I am using 0.74....will I die?

No, but ykhwong's build is much more updated and has many more features.

Give it a try.

Do not run dosbox by itself. use a frontend.

That link also has a Windows 3.11 installation you can play around with. It comes with games like Chip's Challenge and SkiFree, too.

Are those straight SVN builds or did he make changes to them?

They're based on recent SVN builds, but with tweaks and enhancements such as shader support.

Also OP, try Laser Light.

No point putting work in if you don't have to. Plus some of the graphical front-ends can do some cool stuff for game selection. I'd rather not go back to dos.

I can just launch Dosbox and play any game with a single command.

You shouldn't install things you don't know nothing about or have a general idea of what you want to play.

Front-ends are nice and all but rather than that I prefer just creating a shortcut for games on my desktop.

>> No.919640

Most games can simply be started by dragging the game's exe on the dosbox exe.
That sounds kinda naughty.

His site is a bit slow typically, you might want to link to mirrors such as on emucr.

I also simply make shortcuts, in Steam with pretty custom images. It's neat.

Be sure to try out some old school emulators. Nothing like graphic glitches everywhere and shitty sound effects and music.

Nesticle was my first emulator. Nothing like being 10 or 11 years old, owning a NES, and falling on this with a hundred roms. It was dreamlike.

Used to play with a fake SNES pad too and discovered many games
