Doom was never intended to be all that hard, so to bring it up to todays masocore standards a lot of mappers decided to maximise the endoskeletal agitation. See also archvile armadas and spawning chaingunners behind you.

It's the same with Duke Nukem 3D and other sprite based shooters. You can't reasonibly change the look of the weapon on the character sprites depending on what the player is holding, unless you want to make 10 variants of every single frame JUST for multiplayer and mirrors. So it's better to have a fake weapon that represents them all.
