Okay. Now let's wait for the comment that says all 3D Zelda's are the worst games ever made or something.

LA was my first Zelda game and still my favorite, and I love OOT and MM. In fact, both of these games have a lot of elements of LA in them.
I also liked Wind Waker, even though the dungeons were a bit lacking, and I liked what I played of Twilight Princess (really slow start though). Haven't played any other 3D Zeldas.

>> No.9164353

I don't dislike the 3D Zeldas I just think that generally they actually feel older whereas the 2D ones might look old but the gameplay hasn't aged as poorly.

>>9164534
a bunch of tiles are different, I think the monochrome version has a more seamless, natural look while DX feels a bit more messy and overcharged.
I think the main flaw DX has is that it doesn't let you skip the textbox of "this is too heavy..." with the B button, which is why that complaint is so prevalent and people who played the original don't understand why people struggle with it.

>> No.9164698

>>9164534
The gestalt is that parts of LA were designed so intrinsically for the DMG's 4-color palette that the DX version needed to change or remove sprites altogether. For example, in LA there might be a patch of grass and flowers that is very intentionally arranged, but it doesn't look correct in color, so the DX version puts random ground sprites there or just removes everything.

If you only played DX, you aren't missing out on "real" content, but you didn't experience it in the most authentic way and you don't get what made it stunning at the time of its release.

>>9164715
I assume the sprite changes remain even if the palette reverts to the 4-color version. That said, I consider the DX changes to be pretty minimal. I just see the color changes as being shoehorned in and the game is already beautiful in 4 colors.

>> No.9164739

>>9164735
I think one fun aspect often neglected about monochrome games if trying out different palettes on SGB, GBC and especially emulator. I always enjoy trying to find one that fits a particular game.

>> No.9164756

>>9164285
I know it came out after ALttP but it always blows my mind that this was a Gameboy game released in 93. They managed to pack so much and make it so playable, it still competes with modern releases and was good enough for Nintendo to re-release it on Switch mostly intact with only a graphical makeover.

If you consider Ages & Seasons to be the same game split into two parts they are better than Link's Awakening but Link's Awakening will always be special for me.

>> No.9164768

>>9164756
You should also check out Metroid 2. It surprised the shit out of me. I expected it to be similarly janky to Metroid 1 but it plays almost as well as Super, minus all the missing mechanics of course. The only jank is metroids seemingly going inactive when offscreen which happens frequently while fighting them.

>> No.9164775

>>9164739
I dare say it was like an early form of emulator shaders

>> No.9165003

>>9164768
I played through the 2D Metroid for the first time when Dread came out, and Metroid 2 might be my favorite. The atmosphere and OST is really nice and yeah it's surprising how many gameplay elements they included and how well crafted the whole adventure is like. It's the only game I replayed since then, I really like how well it flows, it's one of those games you can just pop up and blaze through an afternoon and leave satisfied. This theme always get's me pumped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCIH943auRA

On an unrelated note I think the original Metroid gets more shit than it deserves, a first playthrough is rough but if you take the time to get familiar with the game and go for the leotard ending it's a solid game.

May I ask what do you think about the GBA games?

>> No.9165025

>>9165003
After blazing through Metroid 1, 2 and Hollow Knight recently I have a bit of Metroidvania fatigue so I have only briefly tried both of them. Not a huge fan of how they seem to railroad you, at least in the beginning but they play well. Not having to press select to switch to missiles is a godsend.

>> No.9165038

>>9165025
Is Hollow Knight worth it? I'm not really into the Metroidvania genre, I do like Metroid for what it is but I prefer classic Castlevania over SotN. I heard Hollow Knight is a 40+ hrs game and that's what has been holding me back, I don't see this type of gameplay lasting for that long.

>> No.9165052

>>9165038
It took me like 35 hours and was by far the biggest contributor to my fatigue, it really overstayed it's welcome. That's not to say it's bad though, it's really great but there's just a shitton of optional content and I went for it all. If you just want to complete it without doing 100% I think it's not much longer than Super Metroid or SotN.

>> No.9165057

It's still probably my favorite post from this website. Looking back at the thread (saved in .html no less), I'm surprised it was only 2016. Felt much older to me.

yep. i didnt know anybody who bitched about shit like navi until i started reading gamefaqs. closest thing i ever heard from irl people was 'water temple is too hard'! but i never had too much of a problem with it as a 6yo.

Botw the the best Zelda

Link's awakening is a great game however
7/10 which puts it in the top tier of Zelda games

The opening has the camera tilting up from the beach to the egg and in the game you get to see the egg sitting on top of the mountain. Did that not make it obvious?

That's because Chain Chomps and Fire Bars were originally designed for Zelda but ended up appearing in Mario games first, which is why they still make appearances in later games. That said, the Nintendi IP overlaps were there since day 1: Manhandla is a four-headed Piranha Plant; Digdogger is a giant Unira and Rupees were also Ingots in Clu Clu Land; the Book of Magic was the Bible in Devil World; etc.

Download the shader pack in the online updater, then load a game and in the options go to shaders and load one of the ones in the handhelds directory. I think the ones with borders are in a subdirectory in the handhelds one.

I'm using an Anbernic handheld so I have to get shaders through other means. I meant specifically yours as it also simulates the shadows in the DMG pixels. Probably it's already on my device.

i mean the owl doesn't have the
>did you get all that?
and there's not really a party member besides marin, plus you get warp points
i think the dungeons really came into their own in la though, like they started feelin more zelda-y and that was kinda hard to translate to 3d at the time
