Unironically maps that are trash for normal Doom and Doom 2 because of how big in size they are, wide open and barren in terms of equipment would be best, things like ZDoom Wars, Last Man Standing mapsets, etcetera. You could also try DMing in some megawads that support such a thing, as long as you disable frag shards and monster spawns and there's decent deathmatch startups available.

You know, at first it was nice to have a guy review maps in an orderly fashion. But the more you watch Dean of Doom, the more I get the feeling that the guy is just another pretentious annoying faggot. Constantly makes up stuff, as if he personally knew every goddamn mapper personally (like a teacher telling you that curtains were blue in a book because the author has depression, instead of just being blue, shit like that), "the Mucus flow" - faggotry he applies to every map that has just a little bit of *atmosphere*, praises slaughter-shit, stupid skits with his down syndrome friend, never even played Heretic but pretends to know his shit.

Really early. Novert dates back earlier than the upload on iDGames, and Always Run was something people always did, if not by just holding down the run key manually and then figuring out they could just weigh it down or tape it down instead, eventually figuring out the exploit for it.

Someone probably also figured they could ditch the vertical mouse input by picking out their vertical roller from their ball mouse.

removing the ability to carry a bunch of hammer stacks. So instead of a hammer count you'll just have a hammer meter that needs to be filled before you can toss it. You'll be able to speed it up if you pick up subweapon ammo stuff though.

The shield's gonna get a similar treatment and a visual makeover, I'm gonna make it some kinda cool energy or crystal shield thing Blaz deploys. Something Samson made for him. Mechanically it'll be the same thing where you just block shit in front of you, but it'll have a meter that ticks down as you have it active, and when it hits 0 it'll explode and then you'll need to recharge it to 100% before you can use it again.
I'm doing it this way because I'm too lazy to make a durability system, don't judge. Also I wish I could make it block melee

I'm trying to figure out what would be interesting for the boomerang, because it's gonna have a meter of some kind too.

Something like having it seek out additional targets if you hold it down instead of tap it?

>> No.9160926

>>9160921
Nah, I try to avoid using homing projectiles wherever possible because they're fiddly and weird in Doom.

One idea I'm considering is the boomerang becomes better at stunning the longer it charges up, so at low levels it just thunks off a monster and it makes them flinch. Wait a bit and it'll properly stun them, making them wander around like a jackass for a bit, and a full charge boomerang would probably stun a small group.

>Some regulars on the Quake mapping scene have no imagination whatsoever, Jesus Christ.
There's an air of faux-nostalgia in the Quake mapping community created over the past (half?) decade to allow certain supposed 'purists' to circle-jerk themselves into prominence. The side effect of that is everyone wanting to remake id1 ad infinitum, CSQC being shunned, a severe lack of gameplay mods or total conversions (Slayer's Testicles is the last significant one I can think of), and no usage of texture sets that aren't either vanilla or have been used by aforementioned 'purists'. Anything new or unique that isn't on par with "Gay Kisses for Christmas" gets written off and you risk losing precious E-clout if you give it a chance.

Basically this is just downstream of everything else going wrong in and around Quake mapping and it's probably going to get worse.

GZDoom's RNG tables have a gaussian distribution similar to Boom. Even then, who cares? Are you running TAS runs or something? The omission of certain options from DSDA-Doom is more noticeable to the average doomer than unseen mechanics like RNG.

Spoilering for obnoxious gossip:
He was being continuously sexually harassed by some creep on the ZDF and related Discords. He kept bringing this up to people in charge over and over, but nothing was ever done about it and it kept continuing. Probably that means the creep in question has strong contacts there, or outright is one of the top dogs around those parts, so you can be sure that a lot of the other top dogs knew full and well that this was going on, but either they were too afraid to do anything, or they don't care.

Eventually Term has enough and leaves, sectioning himself off from most of the overall community. I remember around that time I saw some sentiments go around very briefly in these Discords about Term "getting a wild hair up his ass" because he had made his own Discord channel sometime prior to this but shuttered it as he left, so he wasn't being taken very seriously, making the overall situation all the uglier.

tl;dr there's probably one or more vile sex pests in ZDF staff.

I think performance is most affected by how many On-Screen things are happening and less impacted by data being loaded into RAM, wether it be graphical effects, animations, sounds, models or particles. I know for a fact not all assets are loaded immediatly upon loading a mod into the game, specially sound bytes, and at worst only graphics are loaded into RAM immediatly. I doubt a 100mb class mod impacts performance better or worse than a 800mb one unless the 100mb one is coded to have the class shit out 10k particles per shotgun blast. Onto this, a single 700kb map with 10k monsters is a lot more resource intensive for the engine than a 20mb 32 level megawad with the same 10k monsters interspersed through all the levels.

TL;DR try to look at it less from raw data loads in RAM and more at CPU and GPU usage.

Is there a sort of guide to use GZDoom Builder for someone who only ever makes maps in Doom Builder 2? I just realized all my prior experience is dogshit with this engine.

Is there a reason to not use ultimate doom builder over gzdoom builder? UDB has all the stuff GZDB has iirc plus a few extras like the sound propogation and automap view.

So I ran a little deathmatch with 2 friends on DWANGO5... in Hideous Destructor.
The setup:
>live branch Hideous Destructor
>Peppergrinder
>security guard loadout+blursphere
>drop stuff on death
>on death disintegration, no incap
>bleed on
>30 frag cap
A few notes after playing 3 maps:
>liberator is way too good, 7mm in general I imagine, basically an instant dozen of frags as soon as you get one, a non-negotiable full auto instagibber
>thunderbuster comes close
>weapons stay setting actually does jack shit
>items and weapons can never respawn as well
>punchout is fun
>everyone having blursphere on bigger maps is tense as shit, can't imagine the novelty to last though
Is there a way to disable certain weapons from spawning? Might look into that. Might also eschew the blur in favor of bigger open maps, but I'm still none the wiser as to what sprawling and/or vertical deathmatch maps are out there. Still looking for recs on that front!
Next novelty idea: zerk only deathmatch.

>Judas Priest
>Metallica
>Black Sabbath
>Body Count
>Slayer
>Anthrax
>Soundgarden
>Mötley Crue
>Twisted Sister
>45 Grave
>Manowar
>Joe Lamont
>Alice In Chains
>W.A.S.P
>Accept
>Stone Temple Pilots
>Buckethead
>Guns N' Roses
>Lordi
>Megadeth

>Sodom
>KISS
>Quiet Riot
>Siouxsie & The Banshees
>Danzig
>Electric Six
>Fear Factory
>Gamma Ray
>Helmet
>Blue Öyster Cult
>Nazareth
>Grave Digger
>Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
>King Crimson
>Rob Zombie
>Sammy Hagar
>Nine Inch Nails
>Dokken
>Saxon
>Smashing Pumpkins
Not even all, and in no particular order, with some having a lot of songs, some having only a few or only one or two, but I like them. Also lots more stuff, including tracks from movies and a few Doom remixes. Occasionally I'll like putting on some Alice Cooper, but usually one album on its own, with no other music, I really like the way his albums are put together. Sometimes I'll go through a Judas Priest album though, they've really become one of my favorites.

A lot from the playlist is based on stuff which Doom's own music is based on (as well as some claimed, but false sources), as well as other music from those same sources. It kind of just grew out of control over time and I just added a lot of other shit to it Because Fuck It.

Radio Rock to me is really corporate safe stuff like Nickelback and Imagine Dragons, and in the past AC/DC and Kiss. Songs about being a miserable junkie, wanting to die, violent civil war, and shooting cops, doesn't strike me as what a corporate suit would want if they could help it. Hell, Sex Type Thing is outright about rape, with lyrics like "You shouldn't have worn that dress." and Stone Temple Pilots is largely the milder stuff of that playlist.
Accept in particular failed at aping AC/DC and decided "Fuck it, let's not chase the money, let's do the album WE want to do." and made Breaker, the song Son Of A Bitch being outright refused by the British market for the profanity.

I'm not claiming that playlist is the most hardcore or kvlt or anything, but I wouldn't call it all a bunch of Radio Rock, unless anything with electric guitars which isn't made by some struggling band nobody has ever heard of is Radio Rock by your definition. I'm sorry that I'm not a jaded metal hipster who lives on /mu/.

>on the way enter a tavern and get told to get a chalice from the prison by some other nigga which I accept as they are in the same location
>get chalice as sneakily as Doom engine will allow but walk back into tavern to return it and get killed immediately
>look up why online as there is no way these guards could know I'm holding the chalice (is there?)
>it's not a bug but a feature of the game that was intentionally added as an homage to random game ending shit in MUDs
>you can't even do the quest AT ALL and there is just no explanation as to why, just "haha u died so random right?"
>Forgive this strange shit and continue the game
>Repeatedly get "incoming message" on the screen but no way to actually see the message
>Try to look it up online but there's no information whatsoever
>Feel like I'm going crazy as the only one with this problem so I change twenty billion settings and try different combinations of settings to no avail

Having beaten Strife, the worst part is the start and it mostly stops being shit at around halfway through the powerplant raid, if not earlier. It honestly feels way too long but the weaponry and enemy variety is actually alright. The level design was ahead of its time in the bad sense of the word, as it is closer common "open ended/open world" adventure games of our time while lacking a way to bounce back from having your health be chipped to shit and not being able to buy anything to fix it by falling back to town and doing stuff to earn money. Although, comparing to other examples, its still got decent layouts and actual good visuals for a lot of areas despite the limitations of the engine.

Don't fall for the stealth meme at the start. You're not a rogueish type. You're a tech-terminator in a slightly less fantastical setting who got forced to play with a crossbow as a pistol replacement.
If you want any advice, get as much SMG, micro rocket and grenade ammo as you can get your hands on and treat the rockets as your go-to shotgun with close and long range drawbacks. The closest thing to a BFG, not counting the sigil, would be incendiary grenades, don't underestimate them, don't waste them, they'll save your life.

You don't need voices.wad to beat it, but you do have to read NPC dialogs. Just keep a mental map in your head and save whenever you go to the underground base in good condition from a successful mission. Also, bind the extra keys in options, there's 3 of them.

Actually, thinking about it.
Wouldn't adapting Hideous Destructor to Strife work really well? Not for the setting but rather, the level design and mission structure. And I don't mean adapting Strife items and weaponry to be hd-like but instead, porting doom/freedoom's weaponry and items from HD and their mechanics to Strife and replacing stuff where needed and changing the stores to be able to buy and sell stuff in a more convenient manner.

I'm a newbie to the world of modding and I'd love to get into it so this might be a very newbie question but how does Strife modding compare to Doom modding. Does it make any difference that the source code to Strife was "lost"?

It's mostly identical with a bunch of things on top, like having to make sure conversationIDs are assigned to stuff so stores and NPCs and crap work right, which is a fucker because half the lists out there are wrong.

The missing source hasn't been an issue since the Vavoom developer reverse-engineered it from the demo and then passed it out so that's why other engines have Strife support.

>>9163352
Works mostly the same but for UDMF maps you have more properties available in a nice form without having to type in custom fields.
Models in GZDoom use MD2, MD3, OBJ or DMD formats. OBJ is fine for static props, for animated objects use MD3. Currently no bone animation support. You need to create a MODELDEF file with definitions.
UDB should automatically show the models, but it is a bit fucky. Sometimes I had to create dummy sprites, otherwise it would show nothing. OBJ display has fucked up UVs in UDB, but it's fine in-game.
Voxels are cool too, no idea if UDB supports displaying them though.

There's a lot of good shit in PL2, it's treasured for a reason, but I can see why even Dario himself says it misses the mark a lot, and that even though most of the levels are good, they don't all quite get Plutonia.

Tough and cool level, you keep going between rocks and hard places. There's very little calm, the map remaining hectic and pressuring for most parts, the fight in the last big room is a precarious balancing act. The music suits this level very well, it helps form an oppressive atmosphere.

I would suggest for the sake of GzDoom play (no infinite height monsters), to maybe add a Stimpack on the pillar which lowers for the Yellow Skull Key, just because this one room is a lot harder than in Woof/DSDA. If you think that'd affect the gameplay too much, potentially maybe some solution which only functions on GzDoom's end could be thought of, maybe one is stored outside the map and it can only be released with a ZDoomism or something.
I don't want to suggest to change the monster setup though because it works very well in Woof and I think it's very good, worst case people can deal with it.

The hidden and long path to the Secret Exit is gnarly as hell, and also hard, VERY hard. For the trouble you go through to make it to the other side, I think you should give the player a Megasphere or at least Soulsphere at the end before the Secret Exit, if only because they're likely to be dying from the hurtfloor by the way over there (maybe some health bonuses along the way on lower skills). Potentially a Death Exit could exist at the halfway point somewhere if the player wants it easier, then they can get to the secret level but don't get to carry anything over for progressive play.
Cool place to find a secret level in.

Nothing really much for bugs. Those secret switches are segmented up, meaning you'll press one and activate one of the 1 mapunit wide parts of it, not sure if that's intentional. Could be solved by making them sit 1 mapunit back so they can be a single surface, though that'd make them slightly more obvious.
Start and exit should use the warp pads.

Better there than here. The amount of luck you need to have a decent thread on /v/ about any of these shooters isn’t worth it. Sadly, if the recent /vr/ Quake and attempted Blood threads are any indication, you don’t even need to be on /v/ to witness some terrible takes.

A lamentable reason for not having any level design tools. I don’t want to assume they were ‘quick and dirty’ about it as well, but I did run into far less level issues with 2016.

It’s got something going, but as was mentioned up above you have to make sure you launch the game offline or else you risk having the files validated. If they were to officially support modding these days, I wouldn’t expect it to be exclusive to PC.

Replaying System Shock for the first time in over a decade and it's way more 'tactical' than I remember. Having to actually swing your mouse upwards to throw a grenade far enough away to not kill yourself is cool, and you find out pretty quickly that you need to get comfy with leaning to avoid fire.

hideous destructor plays a lot like doom on nightmare difficulty. enemies respawn infinitely, have instant reflexes, shoot constantly and don't walk between attacks like fast monsters. It's also a lot like wolf3d on death incarnate where the entire level aggros and makes a beeline for your position on your first shot, you bottleneck 80% of the enemies in a door, and you can still get instakilled in the one frame an enemy spends in said door before you shoot them
Other than that it's pretty tactical, but most of your equipment is retard-resistant like the rocket launcher firing duds if it hits something within lethal splash radius. Playing a skillsaw type level means seting up grenade traps and sentries in front of monster closets and generally minimizing the time any enemy actually spends on your screen

Enemies don't respawn constantly like in nightmare, there's an actual mechanic for it that can be neutered by brutalizing corpses.
Enemies often don't have instant reflexes, they do have to reload, specially shotgunners with dual barrels, are coded to NOT know your location unless you expose yourself, the sound propagation of gunfire depends on the caliber of your weapon (stock 9mm pistol and SMG have integrated suppresors).
Their aim is also kinda poor, zombiemen often miss even on stationary targets, you can crouch-dodge shotgun blasts with good timing and chainunners are so ridiculeously slow to turn around that if you catch them slacking they're even easier than Imps even with their armor.

There are definite similarities in design philosophy - both tend towards loading the player up with lots of gear to choose from, then giving them combat problems to solve however they see fit. Inventory and resource management are involved, but mostly as a long-term concern rather than constantly playing inventory tetris every time you find something new. HD has a lot more depth to its mechanics - even the "respawning" mentioned by >>9167782 abides by strict rules and you can play against it if you know how - but that's to be expected from a gameplay mod that's been in development for fifteen years.
