So someone just gave me an atari jaguar with a handful of games, and like what the fuck. I thought this was supposed to be a 64 bit console... can someone legitimately explain this to me. I've got SNES games that look better than this thing

System architecture was dreadful, and extremely complicated to program for. Very few games were able to navigate it with success.

Check out Alien vs. Predator. Game looks fucking incredible for 1994. It still looks good today.

Anyway, the Jaguar is fun to collect for, and most of the infamous games fall under "so bad they're good". There are actually good games on the Jaguar. The /v/ Recommended Wiki is spot on in this regard.

That was actually one of the games that came with this. I don't care for it unless you're playing as the marine. I do like the Doom port for it. I don't like the lack of music, but still a really good console port.

This is the one and only Jaguar game worth playing on Jag. Came to say this.

"Bits" don't mean what you think they do.

There's also some top down RC Pro Am type racing game that I remember playing a bit.

Lazy developers who just used the 68000 for everything.

Now go play some Cybermorph and Iron Soldier.

Nope. Tempest 2000 bro. Also, Rayman.

my neighbor had that system

Alien vs. Predator
Bubsy

were the only playable things he had, everything else was shit

controller was a fucking pain in the ass

I remember back then in post-Street Fighter 2 era, it was stupid not to have a 6-button controller

Every controller has to have 6 buttons.

You're a lucky bastard, OP. Shit's expensive as hell online. AvP and Rayman and Tempest were already mentioned, but you could always play some hilarious shit like the Mutant Penguins from Space. It's gold.

It can be a very neat, rewarding system to own if you carefully research which games to get, and pretend that the rest of the library doesn't exist.

The system was fucking impossible to program for most developers.. and Atari was short sighted in looking at their own dick enough to not help developers around their own system..

ID software of doom had to develop and make thier own code to make the console link up work, and only after 3 or so years after the death of the jaguar, a small indie company had perfect code for it..

It was just a badly presented console with potential, rushed and fagged up by obnoxious management with a juggernaut of a name which could have made it a flavour next to playstation.

The action with it now is with the homebrew and getting a flash card with it, the homebrew scene is fooking huge.

There are some decent games on the jaguar. I like val d isere, super burnout, iron soldier, the aforementioned fps games, tempest, and a few others.

Why did they ever feel the need to revive the numerical pad thingo? It's just so awful and unnecessary ;_;

Good gamepad design was never Atari's thing.

But things like this just seem like common sense. It's like people who had no idea about video games or even intuition and comfort were tasked to create this abomination.

I think the idea was to make it easier to port games from the PC.

>not having 22 buttons on your controller

>>916145
The number pad was pretty useful for FPS games and the PC ports (Cannon Fodder, Syndicate, etc.).

The biggest problem with the controller was the ergonomics. Horrible. Worst feeling controller ever made. The d-pad was also terrible. Mushy and just not comfortable. Again, the worst d-pad in the history of gaming.

"Despite the intense marketing efforts by Atari, the Jaguar is in fact a 32-bit console rather than 64-bit, as a whole; only one part of its two CPUs were 64-bit."
