I honestly stopped caring about this music plagiarism in games long ago. In fact I never really cared. There can only be so much unique sounding music until shit starts to sound similar to one another. I found out years ago so many games I liked have had questionable things such as references from media, music plagiarism, troubled development, direct art design rip offs among many other shit. Its best to just let it go. Gaming would be a whole lot better if it was allowed to rip shit off. The examples in this thread proves it. Do we seriously want to live in a world where games aren't even allowed to have music or its the most generic sounding beep boop shit so that it can be safe from plagiarism? I sure don't want to see this for gaming.

What finally did Kenji Yamamoto in was when Toei hired him for Dragon Ball Kai and he proceeded to plagiarize fucking Terminator and Avatar of all things. It's one thing plagiarizing rock/metal bands for video game music, quite another to plagiarize big Hollywood franchises for the soundtrack of an extremely popular anime series that would be widely seen internationally and, most importantly, in burgerland. There was no way in hell no one would notice and Toei knew there was no "looking the other way" with this once it came to light, so they had to drop him and his work immediately.

It's kinda weird, because you can see people making remixes & "demaking" music in Famitracker, and that's argued Fair Use/derivative work, then sold on Bandcamp or something. When corporate Copyright shitters start doing it to other corporate Copyright shitters, I just sit back and watch as they start screaming about royalties to each other.

It helps that Shimomura has always been open about the fact that yeah of course the opening riff for ken's theme is taken from Cheap Trick, she was young around they became huge in Japan so everyone was listening to their music and the songs were running through her head. But the opening riff is really the only point that's actually like Mighty Wings, the rest of the song is its out thing.

This one really bothers me. Mort Garson did not, in any way, influence Koji Kondo. Nobody listened to Mort Garson until a few years ago. It was an insanely obscure album intended to be played to plants sold exclusively through Sears catalogues. Koji Kondo - and NOBODY - ever heard this album, even though it is fantastic, until crate diggers found it.

rob hubbard's entire career is based on cover tunes of other people's material, and even that has dubious history. one classic rob hubbard story to validate this was multiple game developers that worked with rob said when it came to producing the audio, rob would make people leave the room when he was "working". he apparently didn't like people watching him while he worked, so rob claimed. this raised huge amount of suspicion at the time but nobody questioned it as product was delivered, and most often delivered when nobody was in the office. what a coincidence. rumour going around for years is that he had someone ghostwriting a lot of his shit that he couldn't finish. To add to this, several years ago, a musician called Jason Page tried very hard to convince the commodore 64 world that rob hubbard wrote new music! but after some digging by various websites that refused to give rob credit with no proof, jason admitted to creating the sid music, but based on music rob had written ages ago that remained unpublished. now we've gone from new rob hubbard music, to someone else wrote it, and then to rob wrote it but ages ago. sadly many people out there trying to protect this hack's legacy, and i can count the number of original songs he wrote on one hand that weren't covers.

Blatant yeah. It's why he was given a completely new theme in XIV instead of reusing Spread the Wings. Likely the same reason Heidern and the Ikaris tend to get Desert Requiem if an old theme is busted out instead of Jungle Bouncer since Jungle Bouncer is a blatant copy of Surprise, You're Dead by Faith No More.

Also speaking of Children, it's even more blatant with the Osaka Castle theme from the Samurai Warriors series.

Reputation more than reality, partly due to threads like this fueled by copyright shills and bad faith trolls. In most cases, actual copyright issues here would boil down to subjective assessments of fair use not worth the lawyer fees to hash out in court.

Meanwhile other actual high-profile cases of "melody similarity" and shit like that wind up in court simply due to litigious parties dishonestly picking fights with targets selected more for their deep pockets than the severity of the alleged infringement.

Overwhelmingly, serious copyright claims involve use of actual copyrighted recordings and unauthorized or improperly licensed reproductions of an original work for profit. An instrumental arrangement of a Beatles song piped into an elevator by Muzak isn't fair use and must be licensed. A videogame melody sharing a few notes of "Let It Be" in an otherwise totally different piece of music is far more likely to be fair use, and for most IP holders it's not going to be worth the legal fees to sort it out.
