Does the function button on the 353p actually get in the way? Seen some people post that they accidentally hit it a lot, dunno if there is something wrong with them or it's actually a problem.

I know the RP3 is just a repackaged and overclocked RP2+, but DESU I think it's pretty neat for nearly the same price (which was already great). I like the slimmer proportions, the d-pad on top (and the fact it looks like the godtier Vita d-pad), and the fact it's good to play PSP plus probably some widescreen Dreamcast and PS1. The fact it seems to play additional PS2 stuff and has a proper analog stick on the right is also nice.

idk. if I didn't already have a RP2+ I'd probably buy this and cancel my Odin Lite order. As it stands I guess I'll be using my RP2+ for 4:3 stuff and my Odin for 16:9 stuff, but I really prefer the d-pad placement of the RP3.

I'm of the camp that thinks a handheld is borderline useless if you can't fit it in your pocket. If I'm at home, I have other ideal options to play games. If you want to play shitcube and more PS2, yes. Otherwise the smaller size, lighter weight, and having the d-pad on top with the RP3 might be more attractive. Well, that and the fact it's $100 cheaper (Odin Lite is $225 minimum now because of the fuckery they found with the unit at 4gb).

Personally I don't see the appeal of putting a handheld in my pocket since when I'm out it's because I have shit to do and already have to have keys + phone in my pockets. That said, the RP3 looks pocketable to me coming in around the same size of my phone or the Vita 2k.

Been playing Link to the Past.

I can kind of recommend the RGBMAX10 2. Good shape, decent controls, will do up to gen 4 no issue and PS1. Even a little Dreamcast, but N64/Saturn/PSP is hit or miss. Bonus for it though it does use symmetrical sticks so dpad/buttons are aligned right for retro games.

I find with these things if they have a good design/ and screen size they lack the power to hit Dreamcast/PSP to use the second stick or 5in screen. (Retroid is a good example, can play those but its 3.5in screen is too small and 4:3, RGBMAX has the screen but can't really pull of the later games)

If they can hit GCN/PS2 then they are usually too huge and those games are little less portable friend in design anyway. I hope for an RGBMA10 3 that hits just enough power to get PSP going and that would be all I would want.

Hope that turns out to be real. RP2+ was so close to being the right device. Good price and could do Dreamcast/PSP, but its screen was too small for those games and its asymmetrical sticks weren't ideal either. That better design combined with its power would be perfect if the price stays decent. Especially over stuff like the RG552 that goes long and over powers into a silly price range.

the slider is my only complaint with the system but i would probably never use it anyway since 99% of older games dont need it. for doom i use R1 and L1 for strafe, R2/L2 for switching weapons, move with dpad, shoot with A, use with B and run with Y. takes a little while to find the perfect config, played around with stuff like R1 for shoot and moving with left analog but this setup has been the most comfortable for me consistently.

If you say so. But RP2+ can do PSP, any more power and you are breaking into low end GameCube territory so a stronger one doesn't make much sense to me.

A correct controller layout is a plus. And a widerscreen means actually being able to use that PSP power or even NDS with side by side screens since Retroid actually has done a touch screen, where on the 3.5in you have to swap between them.

Really the most ideal screen imo is a 5in with a 5:3 aspect ratio. Puts it at Vita size which is right at that border of any bigger is too big, but its big enough for NDS/PSP. 5:3 sits right between 16:9, 3:2, and 4:3 so closely you get very little border with any of them. But since nobody is ever going to make one with that much less common and rare aspect ratio I settle for 16:9 for PSP/NDS/Dreamcast. (seriously though 5:3 is the damn holy grail almost none of these have ever used)

Really though if you don't want that aspect ratio then you wouldn't ever need anything past RP2+ anyway since it will do all the consoles that fit 4:3 anyway. So may as well get that and enjoy it now.

>> No.9148290

>>9148203
I think Retroid knows that going for something higher end necessitates switching to 16:9 since you need some huge orders or money to get custom screen sizes which 4:3 won't cover and it would be understandable if the screen resolution is now 720p like most handhelds. Also, shouldn't the point of a RP3 be bringing performance close to Ayn Odin Lite/Pro into a lower price point where you can do what /vr/ considers retro? And even then, it's not perfect in terms of at least specifically with PS2, you don't have the horsepower with CPU cores to play games that need software mode. So there is a lot to improve with performance. But I can sympathize with the change in form factor not being for everyone.

>> No.9148298

>>9148278
Yeah. I want Anbernic to go back to the basics and give us something small, cheap, and boxy again like the RG350 and 351, just with more power and stacked shoulder buttons

>> No.9148334

>>9148290
AYN has a good hold on the large and powerful enough to do GCN/PS2 for the most part, area. We'll likely see them and maybe Retroid or someone else tackle that, but if they get too expensive then you move into Deck/DeckClone territory. Not sure Retroid can really chip into that since the AYN is decent on price for what it does. At 200ish they are really covering a lot of emulation for those okay with a big Switch style device.

However the 100 - 150 range hurts for a do it all device. RP2+ has the power to cover anything under the level where you would just get an AYN Lite but a form factor that makes some of them not so great to use. Pic related has a good design to me, but it lacks the power to get past PS1 so the wider aspect ratio is a little lost on it. Feels like everything in the actually portable and affordable range is the right design but the wrong specs or the right specs and the wrong design for them.

The brackets these seem to go into are:
>PS1 and below
>adds N64/Saturn
>adds PSP/Dreamcast
>GCN/Wii/PS2

Its fairly easy to get a device for the PS1 and below RGBMAX10 2, RP2+, and most Anbernic are a good run there have plenty of design options. That top end AYN and above are starting to hit well. I find its the middle that just doesn't have the definitive device.

But just my opinion. I'm hardly the end all of the market and I can only say I would like a portable device that can hit the PSP level and wouldn't want more as anything beyond needs a big screen to me and Switch size devices sort a suck as a frequent carry.

>>9148290
>Also, shouldn't the point of a RP3 be bringing performance close to Ayn Odin Lite/Pro into a lower price point where you can do what /vr/ considers retro?
I think that's the plan for the RP3+ at $160 or so. They used the same SoC in the RP1 as the RP2 and only swapped the SoC in the 25% more expensive RP2+, so it seems they like to introduce their new models with old SoCs.

The main reason I'm leaning towards the 353 and not RP2+ is because of the ergonomics/controls. The very rectangular shell doesn't seem that comfortable, as well as the d-pad. 353 seems way more comfortable, though the d-pad on this one looks smaller than other Ambernic devices.

The problem isn't that they can't make a device that can do what you want now, it's just going to be at a price that most people won't want to pay. The cheap SOCs are still using 2018-2019 tech at best outside of Ayn using Snapdragon and some Unisoc and Dimensity SOCs which also go into mobile phones. At which point, why not just get a phone?

I returned the Amazon Warehouse RG350P I got, just wasn't doing it for me. The Adam firmware was OK, but not great, and I'm just not autistic enough to tweak the shit out of everything, particularly since the screen can't scale anything at that low of a resolution. I think Android based is probably where I'll go instead, maybe I'll pre-order the Retroid 3. Being able to play a few Android games and just get RetroArch or standalone emulators doing what I want seems easier than dicking around with filesystems I can't even fucking read. Any insight is welcome, maybe these things just aren't for me. Even Diablo wasn't as cool as I thought it would be.

Depending on what you're deal with on initial setup, Android might not be a good idea either. With a powerful enough Android device, you shouldn't have to worry about tweaking after initial setup though.
My 351V with AmberELEC has been pretty nice without having to change much from the defaults. Hard to recommend getting any 351 at this point, but a 353P with JELOS is supposedly similar and has more power. Not sure if anyone here actually has one yet though.

RP2+ supposedly has a decent launcher with the AOSP launcher as a fallback, so if you're used to that you'd at least have something that works.
If it's specifically the launcher you were having issues with though, I haven't had any issues so far in Linux using ArkOS or AmberELEC, so you might be right about OpenDingux being a little more janky as a base.

>> No.9151648

It's more that I don't really want a modern "launcher" experience, which is why I went for OpenDingux to begin with, but the performance was better on Adam so I gave it a shot. I'm not verbalizing it well, but maybe a "stock"-ish Android experience and standalone shit or just using RA on Android would do it. I dunno, it's not like I can't afford to try it, I just obsess over this dumb stuff.

I remember reading back then that upgrading Android from 6 to 10 (iirc was the version they offered) was a shitty "upgrade" and lineage OS had shit support, so I held back this entire time. Did things get better or should I just stick to Android 6?

I mostly emulate PS1 with the occasional NDS games but some PS1 games chug a bit even after following guides on improving performance on these little shits.

I have my RG353P and love it, but it'd got a couple of issues that I think might not be firmware based.

It sometimes doesn't remember brightness levels when booting the device. JELOS at least has a universal hotkey for brightness adjustment (L+Up/Down).

More annoyingly, it sometimes fails to wake from sleep mode. Whenever this happens, it will result in loss of game progress as the only option is to hit the reset button.

Anyone else experiencing these brightness and sleep mode bugs with their RG353P? I'm using the latest JELOS firmware, 20220804.

That's firmware 20220802, two days older than the 20220804 firmware I'm running, and the sleep mode issue is still occurring.

It's possible the issue regressed with 20220804, or that there's an unaccounted for variable in the issue.
Such as the fix not applying properly when doing an OTA upgrade, versus doing a fresh install.
I was actually able to reproduce the sleep mode bug with the stock firmware that Anbernic ships on their microSD card, which made me wonder if it could be a fundamental hardware issue.

Calling this a jailbreak is disingenuous.
All this appears to be doing is running software on the weaker FPGA cores for GBStudio within the constraints that Analogue gave developers.

A true jailbreak would be allowing ROM loading with Analogue's own software, and having full access to the full power FPGA cores.

Both FPGA cores are able to be used for developer / homebrew stuff now, they changed that policy when the latest firmware released. In which case then, yeah allowing full access to the FPGA cores without any sort of jailbreak is actually better.

That said, there'll still be a preference to use Analogue's fully developed software rather than 3rd party cores in their infancy. The Retro Game Corps video demonstrated their shortcomings.

Thinking about it, it would be really nice if the Analogue Pocket got something to dump game cartridges to internal memory, so that you don't need to play games with the cartridge slot loaded, that's the biggest flaw of the device.

Good question. How is it for games like Super Metroid or Castlevania?

>> No.9157192

>>9157060
That depends entirely on what your preferred setup is.
As someone who owns a mini, the shoulder buttons are uncomfortable. Where it absolutely excels is games on consoles without shoulder buttons or games where the shoulder buttons don't need to be pressed much like say GBA Pokemon, DKC, 2D Zelda.
For me with Super Metroid, I like having the dash button on R so playing SM on a Miyoo would suck. But if you like having aim up/down on l and r you'll have minimal issue.
As far as Castlevania goes it depends. Some games use l and r for sub weapons, some just use up+whip for them.

It looks like JELOS has added Dolphin support for RG353P and RG503.

https://github.com/JustEnoughLinuxOS/distribution/pull/318

Trying it on latest development firmware, it appears to support GameCube using a standalone build of Dolphin with no config options from EmulationStation.
It won't launch Wii ISOs or WADs.

Performance in a handful of games I tried quickly wasn't great, it would probably need additional tweaks like halving internal resolution, underclocking the GameCube clock, etc.
It might be decent at playing a few very specific games. It seemed to play Alien Hominid very well actually, just a bit more slowly.

I was hoping they might do Wii support too, I can imagine Mega Man 9 and 10 will probably manage to run on this thing.

Firmware stable builds 20220802, 20220804, and dev build 20220805 (I think?) have all produced this sleep mode bug at least once, I don't think it's been eliminated.

It's a GameSir X2, yes, the non-Bluetooth version. I also have the Kishi so I can compare them. The other anon was right, the Kishi has better sticks and has analog L2/R2 triggers, but the dpad and the face buttons are kinda mushy. It's not a good experience to play a platformer on a Kishi. But it's great for Gen 5 games and above. The GameSir has the absolute best dpad and face buttons I've ever used, hands down. The shoulder and trigger buttons are very good too, but not analog. The sticks are smaller and less precise I feel than with the Kishi. But the GameSir sticks are less bad than how bad the Kishi dpad is, if that makes sense. kinda, let me explain:
MGR:R and Borderlands i bought on release and still appear on the play store for me; since my switch is using a "nvidia tv" indentifier i can see them as playable, but weirdly region locked, change regions and you can play no problem

Anyways, once installed weird things happen on MGR:R such as random hangups and frame skips but nothing unplayable; it almost always stays at a stable 30 fps
BL2 is a whole different story because it runs at a stable 30fps locked; however there is a patch that allows PC otions for BL2; such as "unlocked FPS and it stays from 45 to 60 FPS; also the patch allows for PHYS-X artifact such as nice watery acid ammo and realistic cloth materials

Lastly, if you didn't bought the games at launch i don't think you can buy them anymore, been looking for Mount and Blade and i can't find it in any of my devices on the store; at least not from the play store; but any APK will do i guess but i don't want to try because every APK of M$B on th face of the earth is some "pajeet modified max money" APK and i don't trust that shit

they're overpriced old reused phones with a controller attached to them while still running android
why not hack a handheld system like a PS Vita? or go for a hackable Switch? steam Deck? N3DS? depending on what games you wanna play

Phones aren’t just allowed but the best option by far. Don’t listen to faggots. Not sure if you’re trolling but that phone is literally the fastest Android phone in the world, it’s orders of magnitude more powerful than the handhelds being discussed here. If you’re serious about using it for emulation, you should get one of those telescoping controllers that go around the sides of the phone, and which use a wired connection. It’s generally agreed that the Razer Kishi and the GameSir X2 are the best options. You’ll be able to emulate everything up to and including GC/DC/PS2.

Yeah but you can't lose money forever and I understand why they did it but the timing was just terrible. the s21 is a fucking flagship device, as far as cpu/gpu is concerned, you dope. there's no actual difference between it and the ultra in terms of performance. you can argue that it's less of a flagship because of screen and size difference, but as far as emulation is concerned, performance is literally identical.

and yeah, if you're buying a phone outright no flagship phone costs that much, but the fact is most people are trading up from an old one on contract, buying used or refurbished and selling their old shit anyways. unless you were literally just getting your first phone ever there should be no reason you'd ever pay full price outright for any phone.
