It's got a different vibe that I like more than the PC versions. It's more lonely and foreboding thanks to the music and lighting effects.
>>9140482
Doom 64 came after but used the same sound effects and intro music.

Doom 2 doesnt even have any unique music, its incredibly phoned in. forget the lack of archvile no playstation level could hold every doom enemy so they had to cut down on enemy variety.
They didnt even bother editing the jaguar doom 1 maps to make them more faithful. Just lazy.
>>9140667
yes, but not better than doom 1 or 2 vanilla.

>> No.9140832

>>9140204
yes it removes a lot of the goof factor from the PC version. it uses the Jaguar maps and textures which got rid of the ugly bright blue among other things.. Final Doom is available too and compatible with the mouse.
It combines TNT Plutonia an Master Levels in one questionable package but it's pretty comfy.

>> No.9140838

I like both of the Doom releases on the PlayStation a lot. I ultimately prefer the original soundtrack but I like the soundtrack in these versions, too.
The lighting in these versions looks especially nice.

most episode 4 and Doom 2 maps run at like 8 fps.

Perfect Hatred runs as low as 5 fps and if you can beat it on Ultra-violence with the ps1 controller to do all that platforming over damaging floors you deserve a medal. Doom 1 also just ends, no Spider Mastermind fight, you get teleported to a room full of barons and pain elementals (yes, in Doom 1) but you can just run past them to the exit and beat the game.

Bobby Prince's music fits really fucking well with stuff like Wolf3D or Duke 3D but the PC Doom soundtrack is just metal mashup over MIDI which is only good with nostalgia headphones...
it's also tedious for long playthroughs aside from some moody tracks...

this version is better because it cuts the fat. why is the first secret in E1M1 of DOOM 1 a switch 100 feet away from your starting point that opens a door into a courtyard where you can grab blue armor and skip 90% of the level? why is that a good secret? who thought that made the level better? then you have shit like the big metal platform in e1m2 in the middle of the toxic goo that raises up after you jump down and press the switch -- whereas in the PS1 version it's just a solid open platform where you can easily run across without fiddling around. the original games are filled to the brim with retarded shit like this that doesn't make the game any more interesting or fun. then you have the original music which is legitimately terrible, replaced by a nice ambient soundtrack that not only enhances the mood of the game but doesn't become grating when you decide to explore or take awhile to finish a level. the original graphics were gaudy and largely uninteresting, but the colored lighting effects of the PS1 version transform the levels into something legitimately cool and create a much more sinister atmosphere. what's more, being an effective amalgam of the first two games, many of the worst levels (particularly from D2) are absent, improving the overall quality of the seld-contained experience. aside from this, the game remains largely unchanged from the PC originals; everything that was good about the PC games remains good in this port, but this version improves upon the games so much as to make the originals, taken in their vanilla form, irrelevant. I could play this version all day long but the thought of wading through some of those Inferno levels in D1 or... most of D2... sounds honestly, painful. this is the best version of the game, so much so that even the original devs seem enamoured of it.

I don't agree. Playstation Doom is somewhat cool for what it is, but I mostly think of it as an unrefined half-measure between classic PC Doom and Doom 64's reinvented image.

>>9140482
No, Doom 64 was a later project with a more souped up engine, and they built on the sound set they made for the Playstation port, making all new graphics and levels to go with those, making sort of a Doom 2.4 or something like that.
I feel that the new sounds in the Playstation version mostly don't fit all that well with the original Doom aesthetic, and that they are much better used in Doom 64 where they revamped everything else to fit it.

>>9140663
Reducing the actual complexity and visual detail of levels together with reducing the amount of enemy types, all due to memory limitations, I feel isn't that much of an improvement. At least Doom 64 is basically an all new game built around Doom's core gameplay, and it actually does a lot more interesting things with a far more limited media (consider how little you can fit on that little cartridge versus a CD).
One can only imagine what Doom 64 would have been like if Nintendo had set out to make the console use a disc media from the get go, even with those goofy proprietary sleeved discs you would have way more capacity than cartridges.

>>9140667
Kind of?

>>9140918
Thing is that hooking a Playstation up to a TV you already owned is a lot cheaper than buying a complete computer setup, which can get expensive. There's of course drawbacks, but it's still a playable Doom with some exclusive content.

There's only one way to play Doom, the DOS or Windows versions. Obviously these days we have nice source ports and all but in the before times every version apart from the original removed something from somewhere, or had shit audio / graphics / framerate. The PS1 version is goddamn laughable to what Doom was like even on a shitbox of a PC in 1995.

Probably because a decent 1995 era PC will be able to run Doom and Doom 2 at a consistent 35fps, while on consoles, particularly Playstation, you would hover around 20, dipping below at times.

Simplified map geometry and missing textures.
Reduced monster variation in maps
Reduced unique textures in certain spots
Reduced vertical heights to account for engine limitations
Baronw, mancubus, cyberdemon, spiders, appear less frequently
archvile removed entirely
Doom 2 final boss removed entirely along with the Wolfenstein 3D levels
Notable handfull of levels removed
Performance of PSX version is slooooow, single digit frames in places.
Animations had frames cut
resolution reduced (null point because weaker computers you often had to do the same to accomodate)
Weapon art downsized
No Nightmare difficulty
All the baggage that comes with playing Doom on a controller
I do credit the PSX version with neat colored lighting and the animated skybox.

I was wondering why every map had the same brick texture replacing everything, I thought ps1 discs were well equiped to hold all the textures from both wads. I guess the ram on a ps1 can't have too many textures loaded at once. I bet the crash bandicoot devs could have come up with something like make super texture atlas on the fly per level so that there was more variety of textures

I don't dispute this argument, but in 1995 shitbox PC with the absolutely minimum to play doom still costed at least 2~3x the price of a PS1. It's a impressive port job, given the limitations.

I'm not saying it's a good excuse though. Consoles are primarily for kids. As a parent if you let your pre-teen kid play doom you're a shitty parent. And if you're an adult and you can't afford to play Doom in its full glory on a PC then you have your priorities upside down and should rethink your life. Doom has no place on consoles other than a curiosity.
