>how did they fuck up the sequels so bad
without the charm of the first one they're middling action adventure games, sands was decent, warrior within was decent, two thrones was a dud, overall just kind of forgettable with the uneven style. The reboot came out well past the fad being over and then they randomly released an interquel for some reason.

They went too far on the DARKER and EDGIER when they wanted Prince to be weary and tired. They also had gamebreaking bugs and level design issues that could result in shit like entering the mechanical tower from the rear entrance and breaking all the scripting.

None of the other games in the franchise look good at all.

Sands of Time is insanely soulful.

I think I'm up for a replay. Previously I played it on PC as a kid. Should I got for PC again, original XBOX or PS3 HD ver now?

The change of tone really fucks it up, but what also fucks it up more is that they tried to get combat to work. Combat should have been a bit more sparse since the biggest appeal of the 3D PoP games is using all of your skills and try to figure out how to make your way through the environment to get from point A to point B.

General mid 00s edgyness really. Sans of time managed to dodge that bullet because it was still 2003, but then the decade really kicked in and everything had to be dark because reasons. That's also why I hated the 00s living them as a teen. It had some good media because all decades have good media but the characteristics that define the 00s as opposed to any other decade were pretty shitty.

In fact, they fucked it up so bad that it took me a long time to realize the prince from 2 and 3 was actually the same guy from Sands of Time. Those games were fucking terrible.

>> No.9133793

It's a done game. You can only take it in so many directions and they went for the casual. The novelty wore off after the first game. Hell, during the first game.

The sequels are better in every respect except for story, tone, and music. As for the movie, I'm a diehard PoP fan, and even I didn't watch it.

>>9132632
Sands of Time is amazing and while the following games aren't terrible they're enough to ruin the series reputation overall. They should've focused on the fighting only being something to try and do quickly to get back to moving through environments. They should've tried to incorporate combat into the movement/puzzles more. I think the problem is they were trying to be faithful tot he 2D games where the combat is separate from the puzzle aspect, but it hurts the pacing. The Two Thrones seemed like a reasonable course correct, though. But the two princes gimmick wasn't necessary.

Assassin's Creed unfortunately overshadowed it entirely because most people will prefer combat over elaborate environment puzzles.

People like to blame grimdark fad but really the problem was rather than trying to work on the platforming which was the best aspect they decided to double down on the combat. Combat in Sands of Time wasn't particularly amazing but it was sparse and worked well with the game to give you a brief break from the platforming segments.

>> No.9135254

>>9135152
I wouldn't say it was a necessarily bad thing but it did seem to rely on mostly gated timing based platforming, you'd be hanging on a ledge and have to time a jump, or running on a wall and having to time a jump, or swinging on a pole and timing jump, etc. could have used more dynamic movement. easier said than done when you're not controlling a 4 foot cartoon mascot I guess.

>how did they fuck up the sequels so bad
You didn't understood the main lesson of the game, the second game had to be the downfall of the prince because of him overusing the sands of time, there must be always consequences for drastically changing things for one gain
>your journey will not end well, you cannot change your fate
The third game is his him finally realizing his faults, mistakes and redeeming himself

>> No.9135710

>>9132632
>How did they fuck up the sequels so bad
Because they went all edge and no point with the direct sequel and then got kinda stuck with its residue for the third game. Gameplay-wise, 2nd game had neat combat, but rest of the game was shit-tier. By 3rd, they were basically in sunk-cost scenario, where they knew the 2nd game hurt their chances with the franchise, do they've gave it a half-hearted approach.
All together, like all games that went for pointless edgefest in that era, it turned out to be a horrible decision. You don't take a cheerful platformer about dashing prince and turn it into a brooding emo bullshit, overfocused on "le ebic brutal combat", rather than the platforming that made the first game work so well.
>why the hell is there a movie for this IP
It's unironically a great adventure movie, I never understood why or how it even failed financially. It's not even suffering from the standard problems of "it's a vidya adaptation", for it fucking works if watched just blind, without knowing there was any sort of game.
Case example - my mother watched it on cable few years ago and just flagged it as a fun adventure flick with "Gandhi playing villain"
As to why - because it was in development hell for half a decade. The original deal for it was made right when Warrior Within was to premiere. Then bunch of bullshit prevented them from making it, then screenwriters strike happened (while they already had a contract for it, which couldn't be voided), THEN the aftermath of the financial crisis hit them... so the movie was waaaay fucking overdue, and completely missed the spot it could have from band-wagoning Two Thrones.

>>9132773
Mid-00s. Early 00s were fun, even with the 9/11 still being hot. Then emo came in, then hipsters showed as a direct replacement. The very end of the decade was fun, too.
But as for edge, it's just middle of the decade, the 04-06 window. TR: Legend dodged the bullet with the final wave of edge only because before it, Angel of Darkness (edgy, right?) was already gloom and doom and the game failed spectacularly. Not due to edgyness, but still that was noted as part of failure. So when they had to design a new one that eventually ended up being Legend, they got a free hand to make is action-packed and with constant quips to make it fun, rather than gloomy.

>It's unironically a great adventure movie, I never understood why or how it even failed financially.
It didn't, really.
What happened was Disney getting all their lead actors on it with a profit percentage. Rest was a matter of cooking up books to claim that the movie failed to make profit, even if it earned 340 million. Disney accounting division used the good old trick of "but it only earned X in States", so they could easily pretend one of the hottest movies of that summer was a failure, just to not pay the actors a single fucking dime beyond the default paycheck they've got them into the project (which was also artificially bloated).
I always find it hilarious that what would be a few different scams combined, with decades of prison time to follow in every part of the world, is perfectly fine and dandy when done by Hollywood.

I only had a problem with how much combat it had. The platforming segments were great, especially adding the chain in to change up the level design from SoT. Grappled to a wall and then latching your chain to a platform and dragging it out and jumping onto it along with other aspects the chain added to platforming was great.

There's a bit of slowdown, I take it as intentional for people to really examine where they're going before making a decision on a movement. But on an emulator you should be able to speed it up.
