I recently got a brand new, in box VGA monitor for 20 bucks off of eBay. It's gorgeous. Had to dial in the colors just right, but goddamn I love this thing. It's on my 17 inches, whereas my last one was 20, but this one's picture is pristine.

>VGA monitor for 20 bucks off of eBay
I'm kind of surprised online stores like eBay are starting to sell bulky monitors and CRTs now. They obviously don't sell huge sets due to shipping cost, but I picked up a small, pristine quality CRT from a seller just for the price of shipping. Was immaculately packed too, so it arrived undamaged. Kind of neat.

Not a TV, just a monitor. Were used with BTX terminals but this one doesn't have the terminal board, just the guts for the monitor.
Has internal RGB+Y/C+composite input and also a external SCART connector that accepts the same, can be switched between them with a small toggle switch on the back. Might throw a Pi in there as a Chromecast client for the internal RGB connector.

It's pretty sharp for a 9 inch color CRT from the time, around 300 TVL as far as I can tell, slot mask.

https://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:wii_multi_av_pinout
https://www.retrorgb.com/wiirgbvscomponent.html
i did some more research. NTSC wiis won't natively output RGB (they can do component which is pretty damn close). but if you can hack the wii to display a PAL video mode, it will change the way the pins are used and then can output RGB. for emulation purposes you want 60Hz though, so you can use PAL60 video mode.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL#PAL_60
this has the advantage of setting the wii to output RGB at a framerate suitable for emulation. now, the color is still different than NTSC, but this doesn't apply to RGB. there are a couple of ways to set an ntsc to output PAL60, but all of them require hacking, or jailbreaking, or softmodding, or whatever you might call it. there's AnyRegion Changer, which sets the video mode for the console,
https://wiibrew.org/wiki/AnyRegion_Changer
there's USB Loader GX which also has a setting for PAL60,
https://wii.guide/usbloadergx.html
and i can't confirm this, but mednafen might be able to too.
https://wiibrew.org/wiki/WiiMednafen
now, if you're going to be emulating on a wii, then it should be no problem because your wii is already hacked (unless you're using virtual console or something). and again, NTSC wiis do component out which is very close, practically indistinguishable.

>> No.9133138

Here's a nice KV-25X1E in Estonia as another example. It's harder to pick them out though since people just write them as "TV" in the local language and not the local equivalent of CRT like in Germany but in general there's more CRTs going around than in Germany in my experience, most are owned by grannies and in storage. Most people still used them as everyday or even only TVs a decade ago.
You can also definitely still find nicer PC CRTs like Dell P1110 for 30€ in Estonia too, for example. A deal I recently saw myself.

I also have a friend in Spain who constantly finds cheap or free high end CRTs. Not saying my viewpoint applies for whole of Europe but I seen a chunk of the market and that's what I comment on.

It was for HD CRTs, and while the dude who brought it in gushes over it, he actually agrees with Linus that most people will not be able to justify owning one, as they're fucking huge and only really worth it for 7th-gen games. I had a Sony KV-30XS955, which is a late Super Fine Pitch model that is smaller and sharper than the model they showcased, and I still wouldn't recommend as it sucked at displaying 240p so 5th-gen and below are out, Dreamcast is better on a VGA monitor, and PS2 is largely a 480i machine. It's really only optimal for 480p GameCube, Xbox and Wii games, and most of all Xbox 360 and PS3. That's a very small window of games. So yeah, maybe the price for them will rise a bit, but I doubt it'll really impact things much. They're just too niche.

The top middle is pushed down a tiny bit which is kind of noticable but and I don't think I can really do anything about it through the service menu. Scroll tests look alright too but on the vertical scroll test the very top and bottom of the screen look just ever so slightly barely weird and I'm not sure what's bothering me about them, but I don't want to fall into the "staring at test patterns all fucking day" trap again so I'll just ignore it.

dot-pitch/diagonal size is going to be much finer on a larger CRT, in general terms. So you generally get a finer, cleaner image on a larger CRT when it's occupying the same size in your visual field. Most consumer CRT's have the same broad dot pitch regardless of tube size.

The power issue wouldn't have been a problem solving, but like I said I've already got so much projects as is, as well as limited space, and I've already 4 working tvs. The gaming community in my area doesn't care for playing old hardware on old crts, so no one else would take it off my hands. So I just learned that most of the early color CRT TVs actually used a shadow mask arrangement similar to that of later PC monitors, and the slot mask design that became standard actually came later. Yep, early TVs used shadow mask, then slot mask became more common thanks to having a brighter image. For 480i? You should be able to force 60Hz 480i (NTSC) out of your PS3 with CFW when you jailbreak it. If you have a Phat or Slim, those can all be software jailbroken now. RGB itself has nothing to do with PAL and NTSC anyways, you just need it to output the refresh rate, if you force 480i while using RGB, it should be 60Hz automatically.

Otherwise a Pi or a Wii will also do the trick, Pi has the RGB-Pi and Wii RGB cables are cheap and so are Wiis.

Also even though most PAL sets that accept RGB will also do 60Hz, it's not a 100% guarantee if you never tried before, exceptions exist.

>>9139892
No need to use CRT_emudriver and a old graphics card if you want RGB, DP to VGA adapter and VGA to RGB SCART with custom 480i mode will be easier and more flexible, without having to get a seperate graphics card for it.

Exactly what it says, turns everything green. Basically pic related.

It's mainly indented for when you use old computers over composite and want sharper text, it turns colors off and turns everything into green monochrome to reduce color related blurriness / fringing, if you just use text, it makes it easier to read, specially with 80 columns. Now, they would usually contain PAL video in Europe, but some used NTSC instead, especially later ones. I have a few concerts on R2 DVDs like that. Japanese DVDs are also region 2, but NTSC.
When you play an NTSC DVD on a PAL console and disable scaling in the video playback options, then the console outputs 480p via HDMI and should also output 480i on the analog out, even though you can't choose that resolution manually in the settings (only 576i/p is available on PAL consoles).

Ultimately what that anon doesn’t understand, or is intentionally misrepresenting, is that yes games were made for “consumer appliances” but that “consumer appliances” are not some monolithic thing, the visuals are optimized based on the idea of getting the best visuals on the most tv models possible. Which means they’re not actually optimized for any one model. And there’s the problem with anon’s argument, because that’s where he’s misrepresenting reality by implying he’s interested in some objective quality. In reality it’s just as much taste as anything else. A good analogy would be comparing it to mastering in music. The idea of mastering is making sure the music sounds consistent across various sets of speakers that perform completely differently. That doesn’t make listening to something on a pair of reference monitors “wrong”. It’ll be a flatter, more accurate, and generally drier sound compared to what commercial speakers give you, but some people prefer it and listening in that way can provide actual insight into the engineering process used on the album. TL;DR that anon just has an axe to grind but doesn’t actually understand what he’s talking about. Not in a practical sense anyways.

Any GDM-F520 owners here?
Do you have issue with ghosting? Is it better than picrel, while running 1600x1200p107hz GTF?

This monitor used to have like 6-7 ghosts, it looked pretty bad. I managed to fix that, but I just cannot get rid of this last ghost, no matter what I try.
For those unaware this is an infamous issue on the F520, something in the video board is causing serious ringing. Usually messing with or reseating the video board fixes it. Though I had to do something more drastic and tin the contacts to keep it at least this good. I cannot get it any better no matter what.
I've even tried shorting certain filtering componenets (ferrites separating AGND/DGND, I suppose) on the video board, without ANY effect, better or worse. This monitor is not giving me any leads about what this last bit could be ...
I'm starting to doubt my own sanity, is the F520 even supposed to look better than this?

I've tried everything (but BNC), even using a male-male adapter to COMPLETELY eliminate any cable, plugging my Delock 62967 directly to the monitor (and no the adapter is not creating this issue either, tested in many ways).
Interestingly the ghosting pattern does change depending on cable length, so the monitor is reflecting the video back to the cable and then it oscillates there creating the mess.
>Where do you live?
Finland

>>9144834
Paid 250€ for it, knowing it had this issue, in the hopes it would be a quick fix like interwebs told me .. well that didn't work out. But I will get it fixed one way or another. I'll fucking solder the video board on the mobo if everything else fails.
Otherwise the monitor is relatively low hour and has absolutely flawless uniformity and all. Just perfection, if it wasn't for this one stupid blemish.

>>9144849
Because I'm fucking with it. This monitor has dynamic convergence which lets you drag a 9x5 grid of points around to make it absolutely perfect. The monitor doesn't have a single convergence strip, it's designed to rely on this feature entierly.
So the convergence is a software calibration issue, that can wait before I fix the hardware issue.

This thing is pretty fucking cool: a black-and-white CRT with a sort of LCD panel in front of it that colorizes the image, similar to a DLP projector. Never knew such a thing existed.

I recall anons in past threads discussing the possibility of CRTs coming back saying BW tubes might not be that hard to make, but color ones being far more difficult and much more expensive to produce without economies of scale. This colorization method, however, looks like a decent alternative to phosphor masks. I'm not holding my breath or anything, but if ever some wealthy madman got it in his head to try to bring CRTs back, this could be a good way to go about it.

You might want to give BNC a try, double image thing happens on my eizo with VGA cables aswell, I think its because the signal has to go from the vga ports to the BNC traces and that causes interference, using a VGA to BNC cable eliminates the issues mostly.
Surprises me that you havent tried that when using the second input would be the first thing that came to my mind to try.
Also BNC is much more aestethic then VGA

Not how it works, the signal cables in good cables are shielded and so are traces in good monitors (sandwiched between ground in the PCB), there's no impact on signal quality with or without EDID
Even shitty monitors don't experience any difference, I know since I've tried to remove EDID and it didn't change anything in the quality, just removed all the monitor modes so I had to add them manually

Hey hey hey, I have a question for you. Does the no-signal screen go bit blurry on your monitor after a short while being powered? Another strange, but inconsequential behavior of my F520.

>>9146923
Ah the retarded spammer's here
>Surprises me that you havent tried that when using the second input would be the first thing that came to my mind to try.
Because everyone else who has this issue swears it doesn't matter which input you use. And I've fixed 90% of the issue by not touching the inputs.

Looking at the schematics, BNC and VGA are really quickly joined togheter before hitting the amplifiers. It's highly unlikely the few components between the port and the input selector are an issue, especially when all colors suffer from this issue equally.

I've been in general staring at these schematics for way too long, and there's some interesting things I've learned.
Out of all of these CR1 chassis monitors, only the F520 has a widespread ghosting issue. And the F520's video board is unique to it. All the other monitors use an "A1" board, the F520 uses an "A2".
This btw means that the C520K Artisan is using the exact same video board as a fucking Dell P1130.
The A1 and A2 boards use the same OSD and preamp, but input selector and amp use slightly different chip. The cut-off amp chip is replaced by a sea of discrete componenets on the A2. The A1 also appears to be single-sided while A2 is double. Otherwise contacts and even the pinouts are exactly the same.
It could be the new amps are just easier to upset with even slightly resistive ground/power contacts. But who knows, all my theories about this monitor have so far been wrong.

I should have done this ages ago but ordered some DeoxIT D100L.

I actually want something overkill. To get the last resistance out of the system.

I think I found the website you were looking at, https://www.micro-tools.de/ . They ship to Finland with 6.0€, which is pretty good.

Yeah that's why I posted as he showed interesting info on how to service a TV instead of shit like LGR who makes videos just to show what he has.

Yeah true, it's sad that the channels with lots of subs are literally useless trash

I did try absolutely everything with VGA.
Go look at the schematic, I see absolutely nothing that could affect one input but not the other, and in a way that affects all colors too.
IF ANYTHING, BNC could be even worse due how the monitor is constructed, there's an extra connection between the actual BNCs and the video board, while VGA is soldered directly to it. VGA has less points of failure in this monitor.
And, even if against all logic and evidence it somehow clears up from BNC, I'd still like to the get the VGA fixed.
Bought a BNC cable anyway yesterday, but it's gonna take a month to arrive. The audiophile snakeoil is going to arrive faster.
