The games still funny. Funny doesn’t really change. Old comedy movies are still funny. It might not be everyones thing and its certainly not high brow but its silly and its good fun. Like an old episode of South Park. Its kind of for middle-schoolers I guess. It was something different for n64 and parodied everything from the collectathons of the time to classic movies.

I think its weird people hate it so much. I never thought of it as being a very important or noteworthy game but it doesn’t bother me. The multiplayer was the outstanding part. I like the premise of the game basically being a series of setpieces, with very little fluff. It's almost like Battletoads in a way.
It is very all over the place though. Some parts of it are way more fun than others. It doesn't feel like it controls as well as other Rare platformers. The writing hinges from actually funny, to just kind of shit.

>> No.9119758

The humor is edgy and childish, but you have to understand where this was coming from, Nintendo games and platformers were really sanitized and child-friendly in those days, so this game was basically a parody of that with appropriately childish peepee poopoo humor, like if it were an edgy game but for children.
What I think was pretty cool was that it wasn't a collectathon, and it had a less closed concept for the levels, more linear and oriented on tasks, rather than on exploration. It's also tough as nails, at least compared to other platformers of the day.
It may not be a masterpiece (controls are pretty mediocre), but it's a really interesting curiosity and definitely one of a kind.
Thanks for reading my blog.

I think a bigger problem with the game is a lot of the humour is just kind of lame. I know Chris Seaver himself called out "Suzy 9mm" as a terrible joke.
The stuff that works is the absurdist Monty Python kind of comedy. Greg the grim reaper. The entire plot of the game hinging on the panther king needing a squirrel to prop up his table, because he keeps spilling his milk. A giant poo that sings opera. All of that stuff still amuses me.

>> No.9119780

>>9119767
Fair, but I mean, those games were made by teams of like one or two dozen people, they probably had to stitch together the plot and jokes with just the lads, not a whole writers room like games in the current year would do. So it's not surprising that some jokes fall flat (but just the same the Great Mighty Poo is brilliant). Was there even a concept of a true comedy game back then?

I've never played past SH1. Always meant to, never got around to it.
HL2 impressed me when it came out because the system they built to do it was neat. Similar for conkers. These days facial animation is the norm, but games often have so much dialogue that they can only hand-tweak some key moments to look particularly impressive. So you switch between a sort of interactive cutscene and then when you get into the world most people look a little flat again.

>> No.9121001

>>9120684
Oh man, if you only played SH1, make some fucking time and play SH2 and SH3. All these games nowadays LARP as movies and talk about how they're cinematic masterpieces with detailed stories and characters, when they're really just >insisting upon themselves. Meanwhile, Silent Hill 2 and 3 are/if not over 20 years old and they're the only games I've ever played with stories that actually feel truly adult. The environments are well thought out, all of the enemy designs/environments in SH2 forward start to be intelligently designed, taking characters own psychiatric statuses into mind for their design. You learn more about the characters themselves through the environment.

Not to mention, the story scenario itself is very mature. Which of course I'm not the sort of guy to be like "uh I only play gaymes for mature adult men like myself," but I really do mean it when I say the story is really well done. The reason I mention that it's a mature/adult story is because it shits all over all these edgy modern video games and exposes them for how juvenile they really are.

I think the true power in the Silent Hill games is that it rarely outright shows you or tells you what you're seeing. Like many old games (and a lost art now) it tends to hinge on letting the players imagination go wild, which we're missing in games now because we can render a fuckton of shit. But back in the old days, rendering was more limited so the creators had to engage their players minds still. Silent Hill 2/3 were made a time when you were starting to be able to completely convey something with the visuals and get it across completely, but it was made by developers who had worked with the limitations of graphics in the past - so despite the games looking great, they still knew how to employ the old "get them to imagine" tricks.

Anyway sorry for the rambling. TL;DR; they're amazing games. And I didn't even dive into how cool the technology behind them is for the time.
