Did you notice that this Giygas image can be viewed in two ways? One is the twisted face, the other is a crouching figure that walks on fours (like a crawling Spiderman) toward the screen.

Yuropean here, how did you americans figure out how to beat Giygas back then?
I mean, the game doesn't really tell you to use the pray command.

Another reason why Earthbound will never be one of my favorite games. There is no remote indication that "pray" is a valid option for anything in the entire game, especially considering it was used similarly in other jrpgs prior. Then all of a sudden

I feel trial and error, in some form, is kinda SOP for many video games, and JRPGs especially.

You encounter something new, and you use different attacks, spells, and items, then you remember what works for next time. It always isn't as obvious as using Scan or choosing fire magic against ice monsters.

It is kinda the point of that battle, and the game as a whole, though. After dying several times, the player gets runs out of ideas and tries everything they can, which makes desperately praying for help against the final boss so poignant.

Then Nintendo had to assume it's audience were idiots and put the strategy guide in every game box, ruining the moment by explaining it. >>911460

Wasn't really scared, however the ending to the battle did tug on my heartstrings. That callback was brilliantly executed, and made for an incredible moment.

I think it's Aeris. Honestly, they should have let /vr/ keep the SMB1 question block, and changed /v/'s question block graphic to a more modern one. It would have made too much sense though, so they changed it to something you have to stare for a second.

I played it through last year and figured it out on my own. Basically after I exhausted all of my other options, I made Paula start praying to recover HP/PP. Even though I spent about a half hour battling Giygas, it still felt very satisfying when I figured it out. While a bit obtuse, it's definitely not impossible to figure out.

>> No.912284

>>912260
No it isn't.

>> No.912289

>>912282

That is probably what the developers intended. After you exhaust every option you fall back on the one thing that may or may not even do anything. Prayer.

>> No.912327

Funny that the first time I fought him I wasnt scared, but angry because I couldnt finish him off and nearly died before realizing that I needed to use Pray.
Actually at the time I didnt see the ~fetus~ or even cared about what he keeps saying to Ness, so the only real disturbing thing in Giygas was the battle song.

>I feel its kinda SOP
except Earthbound did it badly. It wasn't "try this and see if it works", because if you try pray earlier in the battle, it does nothing. It HAS to be activated by the boss progression, which no indiciation is given. There is no scan to tell you that, and no other boss fight in the -entire- game had this "SOP" logic. Its not even about ruining the moment, it literally is bad game design by default (for this particular moment, mind you)

It didn't need to spell it out, but the game pretty much let you SMASHHHHHHHH every boss out of existence until giygas

You obviously never spent much time on FF fan sites. The whole "Aeris is a hooker" theory has been around longer than Alice no Takarabako himself, much less that particular doujin.

She stands on a street corner selling flowers at night. Regardless of how you feel about the validity of the theory, it's not a huge leap to make, and people were suggesting it right after the game came out.

>and people were suggesting it right after it came out
An unpopular perverted assumption does not make it a valid "theory".
>she stands on the corner at night selling flowers
Exactly, she sells fucking flowers. She doesn't let Cloud ram her for buying a fucking flower.
It's clear AnT ran with the fucking theory, that doesn't make it any more valid than Tifa turning tricks to run Avalanche. Guess what, there's doujins about that too.

It was deeply unsettling. Something that went further than our primal fear and into the fabric of reality. As if the whole universe was a blanket being shaken out while we feel the waves pulsing, casting off the unstuck, not knowing what could possibly wield such a force.

Your suppose to not be a bitch and persevere. That's the point of that battle. I fought with everything I had. Used every item. Everyone started dying off, and I had no way to rez them. All I had left was Paula and Ness, both without PP, and low HP. Paula's attacks were useless, and pray sometimes did good things.

So I prayed.

That's the point of the battle. Sorry it was 2deep4u

Well, I had no guide myself, but I did recall an issue of Nintendo Power saying the Paula's Prayer command should really be used in emergencies.
