holy fuck this game is good
i was worried that this was gonna be one of those games were the whole thing is a repeat of the first two hours with slightly higher difficulty, but the game switches things up a lot
so what'd ya'll think about super metroid?

>> No.911234

Incredible atmosphere for a 16 bit game. Masterclass in level design with some great examples of environmental storytelling and teaching the player non-verbally.

>> No.911252

Great game but the first two are better

>> No.911279

For a Super Nintendo title, I was incredibly surprised that it was as entertaining as I originally thought it would be.

Expecting it to be a dull shooter like Contra (Not much of a fan of the arcade shooters), I gave it a miss for 10 years. Pity, really, as this was quite an entertaining and atmospheric game.

I love those little alien critters you meet, especially the dodo birds.

I borrowed it from a friend and am playing through it for the first time. Took me a bit to get into it, but now I'm really enjoying it, even though the backtracking is sometimes a bit tedious.

>> No.911374

The shooting was the least important thing in those games. Metroid has always been about atmosphere and exploration (not so much about platforming and shooting), which works really well in 3D games.

>> No.911381

this game also gives you something to shoot for with the timing.. to get the different Samus endings... So replay value.

Yeah. I remember my friends bitching a storm about how metroid shouldn't be FPS. Years later, I got the trilogy collection cheap enough and was blown away. I play it now just to walk around for hours and re-admire the details.

Obligatory reminder that Super Metroid was a sales bomb, partly because most people felt that it was just a remake of Metroid, and partly because it was TOO EASY.

>> No.914216

>>914179
Auto-lock and one-button target acquisition are contrary to the FPS standard of manual aiming (sometimes with sticky-targeting assistance, but never with a tracking auto-lock). Bosses don't necessarily just require lots of shots, and weapons aren't categorized based solely on damage/rate of fire. Instead, weapons serve a dual purpose as door keys and secret finders. Shooting is streamlined to place more of an emphasis on movement during combat, and less of an emphasis on combat in general. And of course, there's the obvious fact that the Prime games are first and foremost games of exploration, with backtracking to reach previously inaccessible areas, hidden rooms and passages everywhere, and vast environments filled with platforming challenges and timed puzzles. In short, the shooting isn't the focus of the games, and they don't play much like FPSs. Yes, there's a strong FPS element, but the Metroid Prime series isn't an FPS any more than Super Metroid is a Contra clone.

I hope you aren't implying that first-person perspective = first-person shooter. If you are, play a Wizardry or King's Field game.

But what I said is true. It sold more than a million copies, it became a part of the Player's Choice series of games, which proves that it sold at least one million copies. But hey, don't listen to me, whatever gives you the chance to claim someone is underage, eh?

Nintendo made it Player's Choice based on critical success rather than sales records.

Just because it barely managed to break a million doesn't mean it was somehow mystically beloved by all the people who clearly skipped it after owning the first 2 Metroids.

i wouldn't say it "bombed", but the first Metroid solid almost twice as many copies as it, and Metroid II solid markedly better as well.

looking at other contemporary nintendo IPs, Link to the Past sold three times as much. F-Zero sold almost twice as much. Super Mario world sold almost TWENTY times as much. It's pretty clear that super metroid was on the lower end of the spectrum

not same anon btw

In any case, Super Metroid still holds up today, which is one reason it should be considered a gaming masterpiece. A lot of games don't age well. It's sad but true. But when it comes to Super Metroid, it still feels like a fresh game.

Loved it. Played it for the first time recently, and I posted on here getting stuck in two parts: wall jumping and the glass tube.

I also didn't know that the super jump is called shinesparking. Now I do, and I'm a better man for it.

By the way, if it's your first time you should really learn how to wall jump. It makes a big difference in the game and you can even grab pick ups earlier than intended if you're good.

I prefer to disagree. Sure it's a well-crafted game, but it really is just a cakewalk. It's something I'll play over the weekend as a relaxing break, but if I want a genuinely challenging and mazelike experience I'll be looking elsewhere.
