Personally I wouldn't wrap cords with tape. Masking tape is meant to be for temporary use ... to mask things for painting, etc. Shit deteriorates quick and can leave an annoying if not nasty residue. Box packing tape can leave a disgusting sticky residue; lots of thrift stores where I like like to use that to bundle stuff.
I don't even use rubber bands on my own stuff since they can melt if left for long periods.
