I've been wondering, /vr/.

What are some of the more original JRPG playable party member characters that you've seen?

Back in the nineties I always loved the strange or non-human characters. If a JRPG had a dog party member or some kind of robot, I was thrilled. If I knew it only had a bunhc of humans, I was always bored at first.

Gogo and Umaro from FF6.

Gogo is a hidden party member that you find by allowing your entire party to be eaten by a monster with the "Inhale" attack (normally a game-over). He's a mime that only has the "Mimic" command, which combines with magic and some relics for incredibly OP combinations.

Umaro is a yeti. I don't remember what his deal was, but he's an optional party member. He's also a yeti.

My favorite, Guillo, was from the last non-licensed non-sport game on the Gamecube so not /vr/.

As far as /vr/ goes uh... SMT1 had your dog you fuse with a demon.

Well, SMT and Pokemon are, obviously, chock-full of weird party members, so they don't count. Demons and Pokemon aren't really characters.

Breath of Fire always had the best casts of non-humans.

My first FF was 6, followed by 7. I was used to stuff like Umaro, Red 13, and Cait so when I went back to play the older FFs I was surprised to see 1-5 were made up of nothing but humans.

There isn't, and considering the complexity of programming of the RS subseries, there won't be anytime soon. And the translation really isn't half bad, certainly better than original FF7 or BoF2.

Hell, if I remember correctly, not a single playable BOF character was human.

Peco Peco from Breath of Fire 3

Basically a cabbage pokemon that sprouts flowers to show emotions and becomes THE INCREDIBLE HULK and goes fist of the north star when fighting enemies.

You would love Final Fantasy Legend I, Final Fantasy Legend II, and SaGa Frontier then. Not only are there other races outside of humans, but they DEVELOP differently as in robots can only become stronger and get stat boosts from equipment while monsters need to eat other monsters that they have defeated to transform into stronger monsters.

Genso Suikoden 2 had kobolds who look like humanoid dogs, harpies, a speaking wolf, a fucking unicorn, a giant octopus, a griffon and 5 flying squirrels.
