So what retro RPGs have a story that is worth reading? I don't want plots where the "chosen one" has to go around the world to "snow landia", "desert valley" "floating island", "underwater town" etc to collect some crystals/trinkets that is the only way to defeat villain of the week with a team that consists of big strong lad, passive aggressive titty lady, and the thief with a heart of gold. Do they exist or did the era just not prioritize a cohesive narrative and opted to instead use cookie cutter plots with protagonists that have one emotion defining their entire character.

>Do they exist or did the era just not prioritize a cohesive narrative and opted to instead use cookie cutter plots with protagonists that have one emotion defining their entire character.

I would say contrary to popular and modern beliefs, "story" was not the prime element of jRPGs until at least the 5th gen. The focus was the gameplay: the adventure elements, exploration, combat, the power building fantasy. The genre took a shift later on and lessened these elements in favour of story, because it is what the audiance demanded. The prime example of this would be Chrono Cross, basically no exploration, a completely walled-in exp growth system, inconsequential combat, and instead walls of text.

With that said I have no idea what you mean by "worth reading", but I always liked the story in Final Fantasy II, VI and VIII.
FF2 took a 180° turn from the typical Tolkien-like stories while instead having a story about two sides at war filled with realism, in which magic and the fantasy elements take a step back and are merely tools used for war rather than the focus and the end in themselves. And actually 6 and 8 also have that in common with each adding their own things to it,

I don't think any RPG has a story worth reading on its own. It's about how the gameplay, aesthetic, and music all mix together with the story.
People understandly blame 5th/6th gens for the rise of graphicswhoring but I think Square pretty much always tried to make FF look as best as it possibly could. Just look at how faithfully the monster sprites in FF1 imitiate Amano's amazing artwork.

Pic related does it badly. The characters introduce themselves by running an errand/event flag setting puzzle that takes 40 minutes. literally came here to say >>9088175 this. however, i quite enjoyed chrono trigger, legend of dragoon, and lufia 2. chrono trigger should be self explanatory. lufia 2 is a bit more basic in the story, but i liked the story beats when they werent just "the local dungeon is acting up again. go fix it, and i'll let you go to the next kingdom", and the depth of gameplay was really enjoyable. legend of dragoon definitely has a few issues narratively and gameplaywise, but i still enjoyed it.

while not turn based rpgs or the "niggas standing in a line" genre, threads of fate and legend of mana were also really enjoyable experiences, both in narrative and gameplay.

also all games mentioned have absolutely incredible soundtracks.

Threads of Fate and Legend of Mana are perfect examples of why I still play JRPGs. Not necessarily for story itself, but for the atmosphere and how the world/setting feels. Those games both have great art styles, great music and are max comfy in general, even if they have their share of jank.

Shadow Hearts
Terranigma

I asked for a good script not a lack of everything else and only a good script. Yes if the gameplay is solid the story can slide a bit but I'd argue there are more RPGs where interesting story is what keeps your attention over unique gameplay mechanics as the genre in terms of retro RPGs is for the most part copy and paste. Also visuals, soundtrack, and emotions portrayed by the cast can all be amazing but means fuck all if the writing is nonsensical, boring, or so rhetorical you know how the story will play out before it happens.

TL;DR Story is the single most important aspect of an RPG in a majority of cases.

You're kind of barking up the wrong tree for asking for no anime in an anime game genre. Half of the appeal of jrpg's is that you have a decent idea of what you're going to get before you play it. Japs like consistency and convention. There's a reason Dragon Quest is a cultural touchstone there. Parasite Eve is one game that you might like, the second one is good too but it's more like resident evil than a jrpg.

Tactics Ogre is basically about an ethnic race war based on the Yugoslav Wars and includes such ethically ambiguous situations like choosing whether or not to commit a false-flag attack on your own civilians to stir them into reacting to the threat of the ethnic group that is preparing itself to ethnically cleanse them and this is not necessarily considered an "evil" choice because it works. The other Ogre games are less character-driven just because they're more like strategy games than RPGs. Thye're kinda more generic rebels fight against the evil empire plots. Tactics is more interesting in that the backstory is the breakup of a multi-ethnic kingdom and there are more factions and foreign meddling from larger more powerful nations at play. The other games are about said foreign meddlers so they give you a better idea of what they're all about.

FEDA is another neat SRPG I don't see talked about. It has an interesting premise and a neat setting with a bunch of different races (including furries ala Shining Force, picrel) but doesn't really go anywhere with it. It's also like 70+ stages long so boy does it start to drag. I got somewhere like halfway through before I lost interest, need to come back to it someday. many people read plays, which also heavily incorporate visuals and audio. theyre just fine as books. plus, movies dont need to heavily on text unless you are watching a silent film. retro rpgs do. you are still READING the story. they still involve literature.
saying an artistic medium is only good for what it is most known for is just lame. the fact that a good story is told through a game doesnt weaken the story at all. a good game should be fun and engaging from a gameplay perspective, but a great story can make the experience even better
