Tyrian 2000 is the best shmup ever made. Not a single japanese shmup could even come close.

Really. It's a game that was designed with fun in mind first and foremost with lots of character and surprisingly deep mechanics for a shmup. I play it once in a while to enjoy it and come out having a blast.

Imagine the greatness the nips could achieve if their minds weren't stuck in the arcade.

Is it good? Never played a shmup before. Always saw them as something for autistic types

Tyrian is the anti-autism shmup. Go play it, it's free.

It's one of those games where you could go absolutely insane with the upgrades without any repercussion. Ship parts can be bought and sold with 100% of your money back, no taxes. No repercussions for dying either, and you could replay the game from the beginning with the existing upgrades once you beat it. The ship is controlled with your mouse, and it's really smooth and intuitive. Many of the enemies are bullet sponges but so are you, you've got one big fat armor that regenerates rapidly. The visuals are great, the bullet impacts and explosions are satisfying and the sound effects are punchy. Alexander Brandon's soundtrack is quite minimalistic, yet cool, upbeat, incredibly catchy, and fun. The writing is surprisingly enjoyable for a shmup game, you could unlock the stories and lore by playing the game if you care about them, nothing here is forced on you. You can't go back to console and arcade shmups once you've played this one, it's like a really well balanced game where the strengths outweigh and mask all the flaws.

It's also probably the only shmup where your weapons don't feel like some emaciated pewpew spitball launchers. With the proper weapon/upgrade choices, (you) can become the bullet hell.

>(you) can become the bullet hell
This. And with the best armors, you can actually be the one to touch the enemies to kill them.

>The Virgin Japanese Shmup
-autistic and obsessive
-one hit and you're dead
-lucky to get five different weapon types
-designed to eat quarters
-linear from start to end
-if 'Congratulations' is spelled in proper English it's an above-average ending sequence
-primarily praised for its soundtrack
-player has to constantly defend himself against accusations of cheating or be ostracized
>The Chad Tyrian
-plays for fun
-big fat HP, shield, AND armor bars
-virtually unlimited combinations of weapon upgrades
-free as in beer AND freedom
-also has a secret beer minigame and non-linear gameplay elements
-pages and pages of in-game lore, deep compelling storyline with dozens of characters
-Alexander Brandon soundtrack isn't even the most notable aspect
-so easy that no one doubts the player when he claims to have beaten it

>>9091635
A few of the ships also had an armor regenerator special move.
Ah, yes, one more cool thing. Special movesets for the ships, similar to fightan games.

The jumping jacks beer minigame isn't even the only one. Tyrian has a full separate game inside it, with local multiplayer and several modes.

Try Lord of the Game. Also, the SDF Main Gun with Constant Lasers rocks. Lightning Gun is better but actually fucks up your generating power EVEN with the best generator.
