It seems it is the case that Dracula X on SNES reworked them as sisters while on PC Engine they're not blood related. To the point the cutscenes Maria didn't knew Richter and the first thing she asks upon opening her eyes is "Who are you?" while on Dracula X/XX on SNES, she recognizes Richter as a long-time acquintance.

That's exactly right. The Saturn porters were also privvy to this spritesheet (which they dubbed "Black Maria") and may have referenced it when making their version of Maria, though Maria was supposedly always intended to be fought over the holy glasses too. I think another reason a bad-end-exclusive-boss was cut is because then it couldn't be implemented in the bestiary.

For fun, if you work out your damage to Richter and the orb you can last-hit both at once, killing him onscreen but triggering the cutscene to continue. Also, if you kill the orb while wearing the Axe Armor, Alucard will wear it for the entire scene/conversation and miss the dramatic jump into the teleporter, handing control back to you. You can then walk back and hang with Maria and Richter but nothing else happens.

i was just trying to figure out how to replace the sprites. there isn't much in the way of debug tools for pce so i was gonna try and walk through a loading sequence and see how it's reading the rom and what it does from there. my understanding of huc6280 assembly is severly lacking so it feels like i'm hitting my head against a wall: no results and i'm left with a headache. but i did manage to find some ram locations that seem to correspond with animations so i was going to look into where those values are used in code and so on when my pc died.
