Do you all prefer symmetrical or asymmetrical analog sticks? Which positions do you believe are optimal? I believe the most obvious answer is that it varies depending on what I'm playing, for example I'd rather use a DualShock 4 to play a 2D platformer, but the XBOX controller to play 3D action adventure. Still, sometimes you want a jack of all trades so you don't need to switch controllers all of the time. and for that which position do you all consider to be ideal?

>All these cross-shaped dpads
Can someone explain the appeal to me? It just seems like an unnecessary handicap, particularly when you can have the best of both worlds by having the cross-part more prominent whilst still having diagonal access, like the Saturn Dpad does.

I'm not criticizing, I'm genuinely curious if there's something I don't see because I thought it was just something Nintendo did for brand consistency, not something people really prefer. If it's a nostalgia/identity thing then I don't get that either because I've tended to gravitate towards Sony ever since the PS1 but that's never caused me to have any love for their segmented dpad.

If that had an analog stick on the left, and ever actually got released, I would have bought one in an instant.
Some prototypes of the Steam controller were exactly that, but I found the final version with a haptic trackpad pretty underwhelming. Thankfully, I made a nice profit reselling mine recently, as I bought it during the $5 fire sale.

Alternatively, the Gemini style button where the whole stick goes down instead of clicky sticks may work. But I would add an analogue turning system. It would turn a quarter circle when you lean the stick forward and to the left/right while pushing it down. Then would spring back to centre.

there was an interview recently with the guy who designed this. It was decided that there wouldn't be a big enough user base for these since it would be an optional expansion for an optional controller, so they dropped it from their plans.

Same guy was also asked about the DC pad having 4 buttons. He said all the devs asked for that because it simplified things. Only fighting game fans needed the 6 button setup, and they all bought arcade sticks (remember this was in 1997-98 and in japan only.), so it didn't matter if the controller only had 4 buttons.
