I really like the game. Got to the point of being able to beat it without getting a game over, on hard mode and with only 50 shuriken.
Though I admit I farm lives in the airport level (I discovered that exploit myself, hey), just in case because the game has some bullshit, namely the jump in the port level. But overall it's an amazing game.
The maze in the final level is annoying but at the same time very ninja-like, going through small corridors and shit.
The reality is that this game is only brought up to shitpost against Shinobi III, or vice-versa.
I like Revenge better, though, but III is still cool.
I'm surprised more people don't complain about the big sprites as they do in other games like Mega Man 7/8. The big sprite in this game is partly why some of the platforming can be so difficult, making it into small places while jumping and stuff, and of course the big hurtbox making you more vulnerable. I like games with big sprites though, I often think people complaining about that are snobs.

Loved this game as a kid. Tough as nails at first, but becomes pretty easy once you memorize the layouts.
Music by Yuzo Koshiro slaps hard in this one too. Not Streets Of Rage tier, but still fantastic for a console known for some farting noises.

Also FUCK THAT STAGE 7 JUMP. That shit made me almost break my mega drive controller. Always use that fushin jitsu on that jump.

Pretty sure it's totally impossible to clear the jump without it, and even with it, you have no margin for error.

100% totally possible. I have cleared that jump many times on real hardware.

That was from a complete video play-through I did. I was going to upload it to youtube. But I recorded the entire play-through without audio by mistake. so it is completely silent. I played the game on retroarch, recorded with screen recording software.

You need exact timing. I have done it on real hardware and emulation. Though emulation with a LED screen, there is input lag that can mess it up for me.

ANONTIP: Image related is the exact same distance as the jump in the shipyard stage. If you can make the jump in the Chinatown stage, it should be the same distance.

I have also owned this game for the Genesis (have my original cartridge still, I think it is 1.01), Sega CD 5-in-1 collection, 6-Pak (don't have anymore), Virtual Console, Steam, iOS and Android. Honestly one of my favourite games for the system.

I'll eventually get to Revenge. I've played the default arrange in Shadow Dancer (eventually I want to play the other arranges), and Return of the Ninja Master. At the moment I'm banging my head against ESWAT which is a similar methodical pace as the Shinobi games I've played.

>> No.9069119

>>9066514
that jump is one of the hardest parts for sure. It's kind of a lose-lose scenario with the part immediately preceding it being a series of jumps across small platforms, with hidden enemies to boot. I would use the shield magic for that part, but then i'd be without the high jump for that single jump

>At the moment I'm banging my head against ESWAT which is a similar methodical pace as the Shinobi games I've played.

Really. ESWAT and Shinobi were both dirivative of Namco's Rolling Thunder games. It has the staples of one hit deaths, duck and cover gameplay, rescuing hostages/ people, 'high' and 'low' plane map design. Sunset Riders also falls into this genre, so does the arcade Joe and Mac, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker falls into this category. There were quite a few action games that were in that sub genre during the late 80's and early 90's.

Revenge of Shinobi moved away from that genre, to something that was more like Vastlevania, IMO. Though Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden (NES). It goes for a life bar, power-ups can be found in different boxes. No secondary objectives. It was called Super Shinobi in Japan, and is like a spin-off series. Though Sega of America branded it like a sequel. It meant to be more console-like, as the game was an original title for the Mega Drive. It was one of the few early Genesis/ MD releases published by Sega that wasn't an arcade port. The sequel Shinobi III (The Super Shinobi 2) is overall a much slicker game, with faster gameplay, better looking visuals. Not as rigid as revenge of Shinobi.

Forgot to mention a cool tip for S3 on Genesis: double-tapping a direction + attack button lets you do an extremely powerful running slash that also makes you completely invincible while using it. Not knowing about this technique filters a lot of people's enjoyment of the game, apparently

Yes it is very much possible, but the jitsu makes it way more manageable.
I'm a eurofag so i often play both 50 and 60hz versions of this game (which fucks up the rhythm of pressing the button right), so using the jitsu pretty much ensures I beat the game without losing a single life ( which almost always happens on that level ).

The jitsus in this game aren't even necessary to beat the game, but without them certain bosses or areas would give you too many middle fingers at once.

The final boss for example. With the power up and shield, he is piss poor easy if you know the hair throw pattern. But if you don't have that then it's beyond frustrating to beat him, let alone get the good ending.
