I played 13 way after the shit has calmed down. The combat isn't button mashing as the meme implied, there's a surprising depth with the paradigm mechanic. The music is as good as what you expect from FF. But there's no excuse for the absence of cities and exploration, and if you got memed into hating Lightning, that's gonna detract a lot from your enjoyment. The sequels are better though, can't say the same with X-2.

I played 13 shortly after release and liked it because I had no standards back then, but upon a replay it really isn't good. The combat is decent, it's definitely not my favorite JRPG combat but also not terrible. The music is pretty good. But everything else is bad. The memes about walking down hallways the entire game are really accurate, and even Pulse doesn't have much to explore once you get there (and by that point you're close enough to the end of the game that you'd probably rather just hurry through to get the game over with anyway). The story is a fucking mess considering more than half the game's lore is shit you have to read about in the menu rather than be shown in-game, and even then it's convoluted and not good. The characters have good designs, but almost all of them are insufferable personality-wise outside of Sazh and maybe Fang. It's funny how people used to constantly say Lightning is just female Cloud because she's not, she's female spin-off Cloud after they ruined his character and made him some brooding depressed edgy guy

Forgot to mention, but 13-2 is a huge improvement over the first one. Way better gameplay in general, and a story that you can understand without reading wiki entries, but it still suffers from the fact that it builds off of the first one. Never played Lightning Returns outside of the demo, but I thought the gameplay seemed cool. I know the ending though and it's the stupidest shit I've ever seen

13 makes the cardinal sin of a Final Fantasy game not feeling like an adventure. Yes 10 was basically a corridor too but it gave an acceptable level of illusion of a grand world. 13 felt like running through abstract corridors with rubbish characters for forty hours.
Excellent music though.

I meant that XIII trilogy starts with disappointment that gets better upon each installment, X-2 was a farce that ruined X's poignant ending. They could have made a prequel about Braska's journey or anything to flesh out the amazing world-building and theme of sacrifice. But you just have to bring Teedus back, Yuna. For the record, and I still haven't played it yet, I haven't heard any memes about Lightning. She's off-putting to me based on the appearance of the character (that fucking cape, seriously) and the clips of the gameplay that I've watched. I'd be open-minded if I had a chance to really sit down and play, but there's also nothing attracting me to the game, nothing pulling me in to make me think it would be worth my time.

Not a very high bar honestly. I loved FF1 when it came out but it's very rough to play today. There was a big quality jump for JRPGs between 8-bit and 16-bit generations, especially Final Fantasy.

I liked XIII. It’s far from my favorite though.
Tidus acted as a ‘fish out of water’ which gave the game an excuse to explain how the world worked to the player. XIII didn’t do this at all and just threw all the explanations in a menu. World building wasn’t natural and the player likely didn’t care about it as a result.

It was their first HD FF, they were using a mess of an in-house engine, and they were still working off their old time scale (we used to get a new FF roughly every year, compared to the literal decade long dev cycles they tend to go through these days) which means they were trying to get it out on a reasonable amount of time

The HD era destroyed a lot of smaller devs due to the increased cost of development. I'm not surprised at all that they forewent big explorable towns

You still get new places to discover. It actually feels like a journey across a world. Everywhere you go makes sense and is a path leading from one place to another, you go through a forest, a mountain, a few cities, some ruins, a tower, a lake etc. It also makes sense that the characters wouldn't just stop in towns and hang out, they are being hunted by the police and you're on the run.

It's very abstract. There are some more traditional areas but a lot of the game is headache inducing in it's aesthetic design. That first area, what the fuck is it even supposed to be?
My biggest problem was that I powered through that section thinking things were going to settle into the familiar gameplay rythmn and atmosphere, then ten hours in I was thinking "must be nearly there now", it never arrived.
The other big problem with no towns is you don't have all the people living in the world. I vaguely remember a really tiny section of that in the city you get to but it was sorely missed. It's a great way to flesh out the world, show how the people live.
Final Fantasy XIII is far too focused on it's uninteresting cast of main characters rather than the world at large which is what makes it such a disappointment.

FFX makes the corridor work because everything is connected, you know how Spira is mapped out because you go from one location to the next in an interconnected chain of areas without ever needing a world map.

XIII never does this. It both introduces new areas through chapter introductions that you have no idea how they're connected to the previous area the character was at, and you can never go back and re-trek the world so it makes it feel even more isolated. Only Gran Pulse actually feels like a world.
